Today’s game is QBJ3. I wanted to play this again today because I felt a bit lost on what to play after finishing control. I didn’t feel like starting AC3 (which I have installed). And I didn’t want to sit through an upwards of multiple hours worth of a download. So I played this again since it was installed and I wanted to try it again.

Quake I’ve found is difficult for me. This is the third time I’ve played Quake overall and the second time I’ve played QBJ3. Something about it, even on easy, gives me difficulty. I think I just struggle with the floatier movement but I’m not 100% sure.

Anyways, graphically I just wanted to take a second to appreciate this. It really is impressive how an engine from so long ago has been pushed to this point. Though, I don’t know how much is the original engine. I know I had to install some mods for the game that I’m not 100% sure how it changes the game. Just a surface level understanding is all.

Anyways. I was wandering around the lobby and fell into this pit that tossed me in an arena with a bunch of enemies. It scared the shit out of me because one minute I was in a beautiful brutalist lobby, and the next the walls are all fleshy and I’m fighting off enemies.
This is where that “difficulty with quake” comes in. I spent nearly 30 minutes killing these enemies that should have been a cake walk (a Quake Walk if you will). I did persevere and beat them though. And I felt like with that, along with 2 other levels was a perfect experience to get my fill of this mod for today.

For those wondering what QBJ3 is (because I didn’t know.)

Also, it's 100% free to play - you don't even need to own Quake. I totally recommend trying it out, just download the standalone version here.

Oops. Yeah. I meant to point that out and even link to it but forgot. Good catch

The aesthetics are not so much even about the engine. It's about design.
