I love the French, mostly for this contraption:

It's just the Americans and, as usual with these things, it's for no reason apart from falling for propaganda, with a dash of white suoremecy too, of course. The rest of us know the only reason the US exists is because you carried them to independence. You're all friendly, cool, and riot like demons.

You've clearly never talked to a French person.

Hell, expats can be as condescending.

saltesc@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 2d

I lived in Chamonix for a while and am back visiting friends after Italy, literally this Wednesday (woo!)

It's not "condescending", they just don't lie. They straight up tell you if you're being an arse, if they're not interested, if you said something stupid, or if you're not respecting others. The French will immediately let you know if you have food stuck between your teeth so you don't go around looking like an idiot for the next hour. They will give $5 for your five dollar words that you think are worth twenty.

It's refreshing being around people that don't lie for the sake of self-centred people with large, fragile egos, so you can see why some Americans really struggle suddenly being put in front of the French mirror.

Many cultures are like this around the world, though. It's more normal than not and the French don't exactly lean into it heavy either.

As a French person I can explain, it's because France is a shit country

mastertigurius@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 2d (6 replies)

I can provide some nuance: it's because France is a shit country, the French know it's shit, but still insist that both the country and it's language is superior.

Noodle07@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 20h (1 reply)

Holy shit the language is HORRIBLE to deal with, I know it cuz im French

mastertigurius@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 19h

Careful, the Académie Française might be eavesdropping.

Swemg@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2d (1 reply)

Hey bud, it's OUR shit country!

mastertigurius@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2d

But you're good at baking, though. You've got that going for you.

echodot@feddit.uk · 0 pts · 20h (2 replies)

There's nothing wrong with the country it's the people that ruined it.

Actually there's nothing wrong with French people it's just the Parisians that give you a bad name, and just so clear, Londoners are no better.

AviAdi@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 19h

Don't get me started on the New Yorkers

SatansDaughter@quokk.au · 1 pts · 15h

I mean, if you consider a country to be just it's border then France is the same as every other one. If you include the government in that definition though, France is pretty shit

Krudler@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 2d (4 replies)

"seemingly" no reason ...

Dude I worked in Quebec for 4 years, I can give you reasons until you beg for mercy

AviAdi@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 19h (3 replies)

I think those people are Canadian... But I might be wrong

Krudler@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 18h (2 replies)

Does that little semantics game feel clever to you? They are literally the French who came to this land.

crapwittyname@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 16h (1 reply)

Are you doing a bit? Using words correctly isn't a "clever little semantics game".
Here's another one for you. The French who "literally" came to this land are all dead. Every single one of them. Dead and gone. Long dead.

Krudler@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 6h

Honestly what the fuck was your original "point" in stating that they are Canadians. I didn't think anybody could be that ignorant but I guess you are and you need to show the world. You really think you contributed something to the discussion don't you. Useless.

There was a brief period between when I encountered the people of Paris and when I made it outside of Paris that I had some opinions about the French.

Some guy in Nice made me a baguette hot dog that I dream about and he was so nice.

Kolanaki@pawb.social · 2 pts · 13h (1 reply)

It's just funny to poke frogs and hear the sounds they make. 🤷‍♂️

MrShankles@reddthat.com · 1 pts · 10h

Made me chuckle lol, well played

French tourists (mostly elder, white, well off) are more often than not incredibly unpolite and entitelt. They geht angry if no one speeks french and get aggresive against young people.

I have met a lot of very nice french people and i think even though stereotypes usualy have some base mostly they are harmful.

85 yr old father thinks y'all (the French) are anti-americans and maybe treated him badly when he took a Concord flight to Paris back in the day.

tio_bira@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 13h (1 reply)

You need explain to you father than, now, the whole civilized world hates your country

AviAdi@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 12h

My father only voted for him 3 times. He said he won't vote a fourth ,🙏

The problem with France is the road signage. Will be a major town coming up yet the sign will be one inch in front of the turning, and hidden in a tree.

Additionally the French universally do not know how to use roundabouts, which would be fine except for the fact that they put roundabouts everywhere, usually in front of an Intermarché thus guarantee that a large artic will be running it over whenever you get there.

When you get to your destination and it's an Ibis hotel that was last redecorated in 1954 and even back then was done to a crap quality. Why are all the walls painted in dark red?

Then you have to recharge your phone which requires you to plug it into the worst designed electrical outlet in the history of all electrical outlets. It makes the US system look well designed in comparison.
