hasan piker (guy on the right) does not represent the left and is not worthy of your attention.
he is actively making abdul el-sayed’s chances at election worse and i am frustrated about it given the stakes so i made this meme.
because like. my absolute BESTIE abdul el-sayed is out here working miracles at home trying to keep poc, migrant, low-income, queer, etc. people alive and doing the actual work of building a coalition, including making real inroads with his Jewish constituency, while being explicitly pro-Palestinian and rejecting AIPAC money.
hasan piker has made a handful of appearances with both abdul and zohran, but now abdul is getting viciously smeared for hasan’s own words, with fox news literally turning things hasan said into attack-ad material against him. and hasan just will not read the room and step back.
this is the same BOZO hasan piker who wears mao outfits, plays literal terrorist propaganda videos for his friends and goes “they’re just very musical people,” denies the Uyghur genocide, supports the invasion of Tibet, lies about queer rights in China while going on tours, and has said enough insane shit that even my OTHER bestie zohran mamdani disavowed him months ago. and the room is STILL unread and some people are trying to tell me i have to fall on the sword for piker.
do i have to beg ;;;;;;
i just want candidates who aren’t evil to win :’(

I don't really think that's gonna do much? Fox was gonna run attack ads regardless of Hasan's proximity, and the core audience of Fox News... is the core audience of Fox News.
Cherries@lemmy.world · 53 pts · 19h
There is nothing Abdul El-Sayed could do to make Establishment Democrats or the Republicans party stop attacking him. All the things you like El-Sayed for are the exact reasons he is being smeared by Fox News and CNN. Disavowing a streamer will not help because the DNC and RNC do not actually care about Hasan Piker; they are just using him as a tool to attack progressive ideas. There will always, always be something else to attack Abdul over.
Jesse Watters has said and done way more horrible things than Hasan Piker, yet it would be absurd to claim that Abdul El-Sayed should apologize for going on Fox News and should disavow Jesse Watters. That Abdul is going to lose his left wing voters for guilt-by-association with Watters.
I cannot speak for what other people have told you, but I do not think you need to fall on the sword for Hasan Piker. You do need to stop falling for conservative propaganda though. The GOP's official plan is to try and use Hasan Piker as a distraction away from the actual harm they are inflicting upon US citizens. Fox News talked about Hasan Piker over 300 times since April not because they think Piker and Adbul are close friends, but to try and manufacture outrage against a twitch streamer while gas and eggs are absurdly expensive. You are angry at Hasan for the idea that Hasan and Abdul are closely tied together. Fox News is the one tying the knots. CNN and MSNBC are providing the string.
Any time spent upset about Hasan Piker is a distraction from the actual harmful people in this country who have access to the levers of power.
spujb@lemmy.cafe · -13 pts · 19h
doesn’t that kinda mean by posting this I am untying that string? i kinda fuck with that TBH.
📣 hasan is NOT the face of the left yall! 🗣️🗣️i have no defense of him and the actual harmful people in this country are exploiting him for power. 😬😬😬😬
and abdul for senate. shoutout my boy abdul.
Cherries@lemmy.world · 24 pts · 18h
I am trying to explain that you are wasting your time trying to untie the two. Hasan Piker is not a significant weight holding down Abdul El-Sayed. The Establishment Democrats and the entire Republican Party are where you should focus your ire. The Republicans because they are doing evil shit and the Establishment Democrats because they are focusing on attacking Abdul El-Sayed using Hasan Piker instead of fighting the evil shit.
spujb@lemmy.cafe · -6 pts · 14h

Hasan is a crypto tankie who might become a liability for the left as China gains more power over America, but right now the commenter is right. Hasan is 100% a wedge issue that corporatists want to leverage to suppress the left. Like it or not, Marxists like Hasan are a significant part of the political left, as are people less "red"pilled who have positive views of Hasan. Throwing Hasan under the bus is a bad idea, as the people up in arms about him will not stop at just him. It will alienate a ton of highly motivated allies while earning nothing from the right. In short, "They came first for the communists..."
We are dealing with full blown fascism right now, and it will only mutate into something more unhinged after Trump. Left wing liberals simply cannot afford to lose Marxists at the polls or on the campaign trail. Anarchists and queers are officially considered terrorists by the administration, and considering how the establishment Democrats have little desire to come to our rescue, we can't really complain about it either.
Tankies might be bastards, but right now conservative liberals are worse, and often in the exact same ways as Tankies. Mass surveillance? Genocide? Authoritarianism? Demanding you uncritically support their obviously flawed system? Ever since the 2024 election, faith in liberalism has been shaken. Rather than interrogate why or how to rectify it they instead act increasingly reactionary, trying to claw back the good ole days when everything was "normal." Just like with tankies, they're insults to the ideals they claim to stand for.
I do share your frustration about Hasan though. I don't look forward to a generation influenced by him, but I guess we can't have nice things. The big thing to remember is that Hasan is not the left, just a prominent voice in one corner of it. Continue to affirm your values and stand up for what's right, but don't fall for red baiting bullshit.

I hope you also realize that Mamdani and Abdul are still friends with and have regular contact with Hasan, which makes these smears even more strange coming from an Abdul fan
spujb@lemmy.cafe · 0 pts · 8h
yeah i've watched that whole stream when it aired, my opinion was honestly bolstered.
i even skipped ahead today to 4:27:50 where my above complaint is "addressed" and nothing was "debunked"; he just compared Saudi Arabia to ISIS which is absolutely a valid argument but does not excuse restreaming Houthi propaganda. neither American nor Israeli nor Saudi nor Houthi propaganda should be treated with such frivolity.
Smif_N_Lenin@piefed.social · 3 pts · 8h
If you don't fuck with anti-imperialism, that's your choice. But to me it's pretty clear he was not "excusing houthi propaganda" when you watch the full clip. He's also talked extensively about the ongoing Genocide in Yemen, and how all aspects of that affect the daily lives of the Yemeni people
spujb@lemmy.cafe · 0 pts · 8h
i actually do fuck with anti-imperialism and i fuck with it heavy! i also am deeply sympathetic to the yemeni plight under the imperialist west.
that DOESN’T mean i have to condone hasan restreaming and clapping and laughing along to houthis, the vast majority of whose civilian victims have been yemeni.
Smif_N_Lenin@piefed.social · 3 pts · 7h
So your upset he shared a part of Yemeni culture for like a minute? I'm sorry but that's a ridiculous thing to hyper-focus on, especially once you acknowledge the entire scope about his coverage of the Yemeni people's plight and interviewed a Yemeni teenager to talk about his experience growing up under that genocide.

As someone who has been watching Hasan for many years, its frustrating seeing "leftists" take clips out of context without the decency of checking the full video.
I used to consider myself conservative (thanks mom and dad!) until I discovered Hasan, so he played a big part in my development.
Yes he is brash and I will disagree with some things he says, but we agree on an overwhelming amount of topics. I honestly don't know how he handles the amount of unjustified heat he gets. I would go crazy..

HazardousBanjo@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 21h
If Hasan genuinely gave a shit about making the country a better place, he wouldn't be trying to self enrich off of El-Sayed. He'd have continued to support him as a fan and advocate, but not try to insert himself as a key figure to his campaign.
I also don't agree with the take A LOT of leftist have that El-Sayed is "running away from Hasan to save face" or "he's betraying Hasan by refusing to defend him".
El-Sayed's campaign and political career is about a million more important things than Hasan. Its about saving our country's Democracy. Its about universal healthcare. Its about ending the grip of Israel over the US and their genocides. Its about justice against the fascists.
If El-Sayed spent his time trying to defend Hasan from every bad-faith attack on Hasan, El-Sayed's campaign would cease to be about any of the WAY MORE IMPORTANT things he's fighting for, and it'd become all about Hasan. It'd be playing into The MAGA and Zionist Liberal playbook and pigeonhole his campaign with Hasan. Its what his opponents want.
Smif_N_Lenin@piefed.social · 22 pts · 18h
Abdul was the one who reached out to Hasan and asked him to stump for him. None of these right-wing attack ads have any motion anyway, and doesn't change Abdul's messaging discipline, as these ruthlessly islamphobic attacks would happen either way
spujb@lemmy.cafe · -3 pts · 12h
Genuinely I am SO thankful for/proud of El-Sayed’s messaging discipline. His disposition and utility of language is so strong, and that debate with Jesse Watters was amazing.
Zgierwoj@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 7 pts · 17h
I kept hearing about that betrayal thing and its some minor election on the other side of the globe, so pardon me for not knowing or caring about the details, but what is Hasan's political project for if he's not gonna help people like El Sayed get elected? (He loves aesthetics of revolution, but I'll eat a shoe if he actually helps make one happen) There is nothing that stops him from supporting figures that publically disavow him apart from ego, is there? What even is the point of him being a part of the campaign?

chuckleslord@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 13h
Every time they talk about hasan, they're not doing anything but showing everyone how incredibly online they are. Both campaigns so far that have spent a large amount of time trying to connect Hasan and his taken-out-of‐context clips to a candidate he endorsed have lost (MI senate and New York Mayor). Turns out, if your only answer to the campaign that promises to help real people is to treat the endorsement of a weird twitch streamer as the only sin your opponent has committed, you might as well be endorsing them yourself.
Schmoo@slrpnk.net · 8 pts · 8h
This entire smear campaign is just an attempt at assigning guilt-by-association to progressives. A full-throated condemnation of Hasan Piker will only be taken as an admission of guilt for their prior association and the media will continue to use it as a line of attack, so it's less than pointless to do so, it's counterproductive because it would only alienate those who agree with Hasan while doing nothing to appease "moderates."
Stop pretending you care about electability. It's obvious you're not doing this out of concern for Abdul's chances of winning, but out of hatred for an online personality you have a weird parasocial vendetta against.
spujb@lemmy.cafe · -1 pts · 8h
no full-throated condemnation is required! i am happy with a continuous gradual distancing.
i care about human rights and stemming pragmatically from this i care about electability. go back in my history and you’ll find that this is my first post about piker, and the reason for that has entirely to do with el-sayed being threatened.

Idk why people feel the need to defend hasan on this platform so much. he is directly depositing money into Amazon's pocket by streaming on twitch. I feel like thats pretty antithetical to using platforms like lemmy. he has the budget to self host something like Peertube.
this in addition to everything you said OP.
KernelTale@programming.dev · 18 pts · 18h
Nobody goes on peertube. I have no idea about his policies but leaving mainstream sites would be a political suicide.

Jiggle_Physics@quokk.au · 3 pts · 17h
Reposting on here in the minute chance mastodon takes off when twitter fails? Or just gets popular for some unknown reason. All they do is copy paste his whitehouse, and truth media shit everywhere.
KernelTale@programming.dev · 3 pts · 15h
Because he got banned from Twitter before Musk has bought it. The original comment condemns Hasan for using Twitch, which I am assuming was intended as bad for using at all. Your example is somebody who uses multiple platforms, which hasn't cut off the part of his base that refuses to follow him to Truthsocial. It also has an advantage of moving his most loyal cultists to a different platform, where he can feed them propaganda without having to worry as much about scaring off potential moderate republicans. Oh and the chicken and an egg problem. Trump solved it by buying chickens and other power given to him by an insane amount of capital.
Turret3857@infosec.pub · 1 pts · 14h
His policies, what I'm lead to believe, is that hes a socialist.
Why wouldnt he be able to dual stream and move his viewers over? Have exclusive other platform only streams until enough people have moved over to stop supporting a fascist?
That is, unless he really doesnt give a shit, because hes a socialist in name only, and doesnt care that he is directly supporting Jeff Bezos by using his platform.
People dont leave abusive platforms unless their favorite creators move with them.
KernelTale@programming.dev · 3 pts · 14h
as I've said in a different comment:
Yes, he can dual stream if he wants to and should.
Addition after like 2 minutes after posting: I've noticed the one who responded was an original comment. My assumption of what you've said was then incorrect. In that case only thing I want to mention is that most leftists are still normal people who don't spend their time boycotting every evil company. Should they? Yes. If we were to count only the most radical boycotters as leftists then our movement would shrink to less than Desktop Linux % presence.

KombatWombat@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 13h
I certainly dislike Hasan but this doesn't seem like a fair criticism. Assuming he genuinely is trying to convince people to embrace leftist ideas, it makes sense to use an actually popular platform. He could use something like peertube too, but using it exclusively would be unreasonable. Amazon benefitting slightly from his anticapitalist messaging doesn't disqualify his arguments. Rather, he undermines himself with more significant controversies.

Schmoo@slrpnk.net · 3 pts · 9h
The point is that you're taking the bait set out by right-wing and Israel-backed smear campaigns and that you even care about Hasan wearing a Mao suit is a result of that. If Hillary came out and said free Palestine they would start non-stop accusing her of being a Chinese psy-op using her Mao suit preference as "evidence." Most of the things listed in the last paragraph of your post are false such as Hasan denying the Uyghur genocide, supporting the invasion of Tibet, and lying about LGBTQ rights in China. You only believe these things about him because you have accepted the mainstream media lies about him at face value and refuse to think for yourself. As for the Houthis, characterizing them as terrorists and considering someone a terrorist supporter for reacting to their propaganda is hypocritical if you don't apply the same logic to those reacting to US or Israeli military propaganda because they are also terrorists (and much more prolific ones at that).

El-Sayed isn’t DSA and, while he has the approval of many DSA members, he is also free to moderate his speech to be effective in the unfortunately highly propagandized context of the American Midwest.
The right, conservatism, and especially fascism are all explicitly the ones associated with the denial of science so I am asking us not to kid ourselves here.

No, it very obviously is. Him being a Dubai landlord puts more weight behind it as well.
The U.S. currently has huge inertia in terms of leftism, but you continue wasting that on "I believe in science" and "Israeli Jews have a right to self-determination" candidates.
If only y'all had the courage to form a completely new, radical communist party from the ground up...

obviously i encourage doing your own source analysis toward your own conclusions—
but also the source they linked is basically the socialist-imperialist (tankie) version of right-wing conspiracy channels
proceed with caution is all i would say

I'd LOVE one example of him being an "imperialist", "tankie", or "conspiracy theorist".

I'm not sure how that's a dog whistle for the right... The right HATES science and it comes off to me like he's making a point about what works instead of playing stupid word games.

They don't hate science, they hate "soyience". The kind that tells you that trans people exist and black people aren't inferior. This is how most of them think.
And I said right-LIBERTARIANS. I'm not talking about MAGA etc. I'm talking about the Ayn Rand people who won't let you touch a specific hard drive in their house for some weird reason.

Is that you in the video? You're no better than the right in my opinion. Also playing words games and saying nothing useful with no hard evidence.
dreamy@lemmy.blahaj.zone · -1 pts · 11h
Sorry, I thought that the words coming out of his mouth on video was enough. Silly me.
And no I'm not a YouTuber what the hell are you talking about 🤣

BadEmpanada is not a trustworthy journalistic or subjective source heads up

then why aren't you electing yourself :'(
Why let others do your policies?
Build coalitions, make real inroads, liberate Palestine, and reject capitalism.
Why do you need a servant to do commit your demands?
spujb@lemmy.cafe · 6 pts · 20h
well the answer is simple, i am evil and i would never vote for myself
alapakala@quokk.au · -5 pts · 20h
then you have your answer why your demands are never met :'(
Gonna go back to actually feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, and decapitating private equitours.
