Context:

As a teacher in machining / Industrial Engineering, and as a person that recently found stoic philosophy, I double love this post.

Why are they cutting external threads with a tap, I don't even think that's physically possible.

You can also use a tap as a lathe threading tool if it's got the tooth spacing you want, and the diameter is bigger than any of the dies you have

Real machinists will be sad with you if you do this

It's a thread mill, not a tap, the grooves are horizontal. It technically is possible to cut an external thread with a tap.

I once made worm gears using a M10x1 tap in a manual lathe.

i once made a worm bin using box joints in spruce

Brains react to change, surprisal. You may go back to baseline after and event but will surely feel when it changes back in the other direction
