John Apple could make a big statement with the Maps app.

Mapquest is currently #1 in the App Store maps and navigation category, simply due to the fact that they name bodies of water correctly. Ternus has a real opportunity to cement a “new sheriff in town” moment by standing up to insanity and following the sane naming convention too. It would generate publicity and earn brand cachet.

I had high hopes that he would return Apple to a customer-focused mindset, instead of capitulating to dictators, we shall see I guess.

The moment he signed up for a new account on X I knew nothing good was coming.

Good point. Sigh.

I'm sure the new CEO will be very reasonable, and not make anything to please Trump.

Woops, that was last year, but I'm sure they changed!

‘I’m not political’: Tim Cook says his 24-karat gift to Trump wasn’t a political statement

Ooooohhhh right.

That’s why Cook is staying on the the Trump-appeasement position, to hopefully isolate Ternus from the circus.

If that shit trophy is all it takes to please the toddler and save thousands of jobs of average workers it was money well spent.

CoMaps could get a boost from this, too. https://sopuli.xyz/c/CoMaps

blitzen@lemmy.ca · 7 pts · 1d

That’s what I’m hoping too, or at least just a general increased support for OpenStreetMao

luipaard0011@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 19h

I am still using CoMaps in CarPlay even the app force to open it twice because the first time is glitchy, or I get a black screen or a background map layout loading forever. But still rocks on mobile tho

IMO, getting angry at Apple and Google for this is half the reason Trump does shit like this. It deflects from Iran/Epstein files, and further divides us.

Do I support it, of course not. But the mapping compiles are going to simply pass through the GNIS data (something I think they should do in any case), and we should ignore the noise and work on the actual issue that is a psychopath in the White House and an uncomfortable number of fellow citizens who support him. Lake Ontario / Gulf of Mexico / Denali will return when/if we have a functioning government again.

Well my point is, they could use this as a battle line against the fascists. Help galvanize support against them by showing us that they aren’t putting up with his shit.

Davel23@fedia.io · 6 pts · 1d (1 reply)

What gives you the idea that they are against the fascists in any way?

baggachipz@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 1d

They used to refuse access to people’s private when the govt/law enforcement requested it unnecessarily. They are supposed to be the customer-centric company who doesn’t have government contracts. Steve famously contributed to progressive causes.

Say what you will about Tim Cook, but his first act as CEO was not to capitulate to a fascist.

Also, saying "Tim Apple" and "John Apple" is funny and edgy, but it also normalises what Trump called him. Makes it sound like Apple users are siding with Trump to some extent. Maybe let's not let people make that assumption. (Also, Trump only said it once, so what's it say about people who continue to use it?)

baggachipz@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 1d

I just think it’s a hilarious illustration of how dumb trump is and use it to remind people of that.

fourish@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 17h

Tim Cook saved his employees jobs from a power tripping grifter. I’m not going to blame him in any way. Trump and maga get every shred of that.

What else has apple capitulated on that we don’t know is the real question.

skozzii@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 8h (1 reply)

100% guaranteed government backdoor.

anon_8675309@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 4h

Right? As much as they talk about privacy and put a big show on, and yet they lock you into their ecosystem. Just raises flags.

Apple is part of Project 2025 they just don’t advertise it
