yes i have tried polytoria, not for me
roblox sucks balls and i want to play something like old roblox, kinda like polytoria too but more like roblox, like that it has its own marketplace and stuff, not just the old roblox client. I want to be able to play with my windows friends btw, so either cross platform or in a web browser

What, so you want microtransactions? Unless you mean user-created games, in which case Luanti is pretty awesome for that. There are Minecraft-likes (e.g. Mineclonia), but there are other games that do their own thing: Asuna is more creative focused with mechanics inspired by Terraria, NodeCore is the opposite where it's very technical, etc. They just share the same voxel core, but otherwise they are pretty different to each others. There are even some story driven games, arcade games, etc. that are kind of neat too. Luanti is cross-platform and you can easily setup multiplayer (which can be easy peer to peer LAN or a server)

People forget about the indie scene on roblox too. The front page stuff is slop but there are great hidden gems on roblox like Microwave Dinner and Super Blox 64

I've never played Roblox, but perhaps Luanti? It's me more like Minecraft, but highly customizable and completely open-source.

It's not a Minecraft clone, there are FPS games implemented with it, base-builders, etc. I didn't look into it in detail, just thought that there is a chance it it could fit your needs.
Happy hunting!

The way you describe it, you don't want a "game", but rather VRChat or Second Life, but focused on games rather than socializing

not sure, but basically just old roblox with basically everything working like the catalog etc. 'cause theres a lot of old roblox CLIENTS but not any like catalog or easy friend joining thing

Frankly, you're better off playing on steam. Find a game, share the game name or link with friends, install, play together. There are plenty of free, multiplayer games there.
SteamDB offers a much better search than Steam itself, many useful filters on the right side - https://steamdb.info/tag/113/?category=1

I feel like GMOD is as close to Roblox-like player games without it being Second Life or VRChat. At least in terms of social based games and just bizarre shit. I don't think any UI or QOL stuff will be similar or familiar.
