I would have loved to have it at that time but as an educated retro gamer now my god was it bad. The displays of game gear and lynx were really washed out (unusable by today's standard) and the battery usage of both was legendary too.
Then, the games. The Atari quality was an absolute hit or miss per game (apologies to Atari fans), ranging from good to abysmal. In the end I don't think this system was ever worth it. And I liked the virtual boy, which also wasnt.
I had a Game Gear with this huge rechargeable battery accessory. It was hilariously big. It had a belt clip, but if I put it on my belt, my pants dropped.
I personally don't think so but am not an expert on Atari themselves. I know they did have some legendary games like Rampart, Gauntlet and so on, though.
For me, the Atari stuff was mostly like the crappy controller which I asked myself why I should use that if there's far better stuff around. And I understand if anyone having fond memories would hate this opinion.

was there ever a time when Atari had any meaningful stretch of quality releases? it always seemed like 1 good followed by 5 bad.
