I wish I knew what video you were referring to. I saw no video. I knew that every time Republicans gather in masses Grindr gets heavier than normal usage and starts experiencing problems. So after the day's scheduled events were over I went to an outage site that offers location information expecting to find the usual. And I did.
I'm telling you I used historical data to form a hypothesis and found exactly the data I expected. Look at that map again. Notice other major cities like San Francisco known to have large gay populations aren't having that outage or aren't having one anywhere close to the same scale? Notice how it started in the last hour of schedules events? Did you know you can go look at the outage data from yesterday and not see the same peak at 8pm local time?
You can get defensive but that doesn't change how repeatable this is and how if your ideas held any water we would expect to see other indicators that would match your hypothesis. We don't.

Again, this is not measuring traffic from Grindr. It’s showing user reports to DownDetector on a heat map. That’s not remotely the same as measuring traffic to Grindr or a reflection of the actual server status of Grindr, primarily because anyone can add ‘data’ to it, regardless of its veracity.

The real message is that republicans, who notoriously are homophobic and vote to eradicate LGBTQ+, also include people who are homosexual, bisexual, or trans chasers.

I find importance in combatting this myth because as a queer person, it's frankly tiring to hear "homophobes are just repressed self-hating gays, actually" over and over—usually from straight people. It's the "adult" version of saying, "they're just bullying you because they like you".
What does this narrative do for anyone? It misses the point of why these people do what they do: they're bigoted. It reframes the issue from being about straight people oppressing gay people to gays oppressing themselves. It functions as a quick "gotcha" to make these people look pathetic, and for us to feel "better" than them. Which, well... they're Republicans. Do we need to grasp at straws, especially now? We don't.
We never hear about "DNC conventions crash grindr". Why? Are we to believe the percentage of gays—and all closeted, no less—is higher in the republican party than the democrats? I don't find such a thesis compelling. In fact, Pew found in 2024 that over 80% of LGBTQ voters are democrats. Yet somehow, only GOP cons are a problem. I don't think so.
If using gay people as a cheap cudgel against the GOP is more important to you; if you're more invested in being right on the internet; that's a you problem. Goodbye ✌️
Population heat maps don't spike the same hour that conventions end their scheduled content. There is a lot of information on that map and chart that don't match it being a population heatmap proxy.
And 8pm Wednesday is peak time? Even in a city where that isn't a thing that happens? It just happened to take place coincidentally right as the day's event was winding down just like it always does during every Republican convention.
That's a level of coincidence frequency that requires a conspiracy theory because it's not statistically probable or possible.
