Really not surprising. In the US these type helmets are literally just meant to appease helmet laws. Most of the people who actually buy them would much rather not wear anything at all. And if you think that's stupid, well, you're exactly right.
I used to ride my 600cc motorcycle with helmet, jacket, and gloves minimum. Also had draggin jeans (sp? Kevlar lined so more protective) and eventually got proper boots and a full leather track suit.
One day after wrenching on it I was feeling lazy and took it for the test ride to make sure everything was good with just the helmet (and a hoodie and regular jeans). Just went around the block, but holy did I feel naked. Any issue or fall and I knew I'd be losing a bunch of skin, even at the low speeds I was doing in my suburban community.
Didn't have any issues but never again.... Minimum jacket, gloves, and helmet to ride.
I slid twice in the first few months learning to ride. I traveled 10 feet when making a long left turn at an intersection and running into gravel along the way. That jacket saved my shoulder from some nasty road rash.
thank god i havent slid yet, over 2k miles in. i cant afford kevlar or leathers so lets hope it stays that way. my biggest issue is assholes in huge vehicles turning in front of me or merging into me. the perk is i am even more aware of my surroundings when driving our car because i have to be so hyper vigilant on my ruckus.
Depends how fast you're going. The Hurt Report (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurt_Report) shows that the chin takes the majority of head impacts during a motorcycle crash. I personally have chin scars from a bicycle crash where I was going the same speed as a walker, and wearing a standard bicycle helmet. As a lifelong rider of both motorized and unmotorized 2-wheeled vehicles, there's very little protection difference between a 1/2 helmet and a 3/4 helmet.
I could totally understand those results. Did motocross for a while, and the chin meets the dirt first most of the time (as far as things that shouldn't ever see damage, anyways). Any helmet that doesn't have a solid face guard is just posers posing, even for slow speeds.
... hell, one of the worst injuries I got was unironically at like 10mph on my inner thigh when I flipped over my handlebars from a funky hilltop! Massive bruise about 6"x20" along my inner thigh. Blue and purple and terrible. All the connective tissue of skin to flesh was damaged. Hurt A LOT. Still have a bulge almost like a blister about 6"x8" that looks more like a fatty thigh from it.
The suckers who take even worse damage to their heads... oof.
Ouch! My brother rode motocross in 250cc amateur for 10 years, competed at a bunch of the mid-atlantic tracks like Budds Creek and Breezewood, has the x-rays to go with it! Now he's got a KTM 350, I have a Zero FX with rallycross tires, and we just go into the woods and have fun with friends. What were you riding when you were doing motocross?
As the article mentions, no one wearing that kind of helmet cares much about safety. They're not likely to be returning or destroying theirs, and cops won't be checking recall notices.

If you're on anything faster than a class 1 e-bike, some sort of full helmet is a good idea.
On a motorcycle, you should be wear an ECE 22.06 or better helmet with full gear: Dress for the slide, not the ride.

I've only seen them in the US and thought they were a thing for people that really care about the fashion and looks of riding but don't really ride.
They're obv illegal most other places I've been so you don't see them. But they're a joke anyway.

New Hampshire still doesn’t require any sort of helmet so that minimum required keeps you legal until you cross into that state

I was watching the Tony Hawk documentary and in every video of him landing on his head, the helmet would just pop out even before he hit the ground.
