they caught on - it's just the technology moved on towards compact discs eventually and then to DVD and Blu-Ray.

Right, I meant they didn't catch on in this format. As evidenced by the fact that all through the 90s we had VHS and not giant dvds 😊

Saying these caught on is like saying the jaguar was a success because the playstation later used CDs. Its true in the very broadest terms, but the specific technology was never a hit.

it did its job and paved the way for future formats. some still consider it to be the definitive disc format

I think I have close to 100 discs, I really should get rid of them, they take up so much space.
