I installed my new rain gage yesterday.

After hemming and hawing for that last couple of months after my trusty old glass rain gage shattered in a very heavy thunderstorm, I finally got a new one ordered and installed to replace it. As befitting an old fart Grandpa that wears bifocals, it's got Ezy read numbers. (and for those in LA, yes it measures inches).

In a bit of deja vu, we are again expecting another round of severe weather with heavy rain and possible 70mph/110kmh winds or tornados late this afternoon and night time.

I could tell how this one goes amongst most married couples

"HONEY LOOKS LIKE IT'S GONNA RAIN"

"okay sweetie"

"HONEY I bet you this is gonna be a 3, maybe a 4 or even a 5"

"Okay sweetie"

4 hours later

BABE GUESS WHAT

BABE

GUESS HOW HIGH IT IS

YOU'LL NEVER BELIEVE IT

No, it's more like I put the new rain gage up Grandma!. It's soooo cool! It then never rains again......

This happened with this new gage. The weather forecast promised heavy thunder storms and showers for all day. I stood on my dock looking across the lake at the thunder storm passing me by just a few miles to the southeast. Not a single drop did we get.

I am disappoint. So, so disappoint..... 😰 😰

I always think it's a huge victory when we are able to convince our selves to spend a little money on some really practical, simple joy like this

It's the simple things that are the best things.

I need one of these.

We got over 2 inches last night in about an hour.

I'll have to poke around and see if there are any local sources. I really hate ordering off Amazon

(central Florida)

Bluewing@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 8h

Any hardware or big box store will have them. I would have bought one at my local hardware store in town, but they were out and not ordering more until spring. And I the middle of nowhere here, ordering from Amazon or Walmart is a necessity if you need or want things that people in the big cities take for granted. Otherwise you do without.

That’s probably closer to fourteen inches.

don_kiedyck@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 20h (1 reply)

That’s what she said.

SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.social · 4 pts · 20h

No she’d say it was three and a half on a good day.

Bluewing@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 8h

Not even in my wildest insanity has it ever been more than 7"

prenatal_confusion@feddit.org · 4 pts · 1d (1 reply)

You need to install it right under thr gutter overflow. Otherwise you want read all the rain.

Bluewing@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 8h

Don't have gutters. The snow sliding off the roof sees to that.

It all went southeast of us by just a few miles. Not a single drop of rain.

verity_kindle@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 8h (1 reply)

Sorry, sure your gauge will be baptized soon.

Bluewing@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 8h

It better be quick. Won't be too many more weeks and the snow will start falling here. In 3 or 4 weeks I will need to take it in for the winter.

Thought this was sitting on the ground at first and that was 7 feet

Bluewing@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 7h

At best it might be. Now I gots to go get a tape and measure how high it is. Wouldn't it be perfectly cromulent if it is 7 ft from the ground!

Edit: Dammit! 61 1/4". Not cromulent at all.
