This is such a bullshit argument I'm sick of seeing. People can be against multiple things. I'm against AI and private jets. Just because one is worse doesn't make the other okay. This is basic middle school level logic you're failing at.
Eh, climate change was already a massive problem before this. The current AI boom is merely gasoline on the pre-existing fire that we already couldn't put out :D
I think, in this case, two things can be true. The ruling class is and has been killing us with wars, legislating people into starvation, etc. They’re also hoping to kill us with their llms next.
They killed us with the combustion engine in tanks too. The technology exists now. I don’t like nukes but nukes are real and people are going to have them. We can’t go back. Now we are in an AI Cold War. It will pass…or end the world. It’s something we have to deal with now. Going back isn’t an option anymore.
I like how exactly 90 days after SpaceX would have had to abide by the NASDAQ rules they changed, all the AI CEOs suddenly call for a slow down so they don't get blamed for the economic hit they know is coming.
"But we had to slow down to keep everyone safe."
No, you need to blame safety and get the public on board to avoid the pitchforks when you inevitably tank the global economy because you've overexposed the entire world to your carelessness. ...again.
One of them actually said on camera that they'll kill us by the end of the decade but at least they'll make us a lot of money first. It's like real life isn't even trying anymore.
This is a distraction from the real problems AI is causing, and is ignoring a direct connection between AI and the people in power.
These are not two separate issues, they are one in the same. Saying that people are just trying to distract us by making us afraid of AI is conspiratorial. The 1% love AI and want people to love it, and aren't using it as a distraction for the masses. If anything AI is helping some people realize the direct cause of their problems, the rich.
I find this message to be counter productive at best.
Have nuance. You are correct. But also not. AI is simply one of the means of production which means that it will inherently change labor relations. This is what OP is talking about. Being anti AI for the sake of being anti AI is dumb. Being anti AI because it is being used to prop up a dying parasite class is a more balanced point of view. That is the point of the post (not communicated very well though).
I think that there are legitimate reasons to criticize AI outside of the sphere of socialism, and that if people are against AI that's a win in my book.
This same argument can be extended to literally any technology developed under capitalism which is what makes it nonsensical. The focus on technology is deeply misguided because this is fundamentally a social problem.
Hard disagree. Even if AI was developed in a hypothetical utopian communist state, the ethical, artistic and especially environmental concerns would still be legitimate reasons to be anti AI.
If someone is against ai and they do it for reasons other than socialism, that's a win in my book.
What's legitimate is inherently subjective. Yet, what we do see objectively is that people living in a socialist society overwhelmingly welcome this technology.

AI as a technology is not a problem. AI in the hands of rich and powerful sociopaths is another matter.

A box of crayons in the hands of rich and powerful sociopaths is a problem. Them controlling AI is downright dangerous.

Agree. Personally, I think its the financialization of it that is going to get us. Like the subprime crisis and. Com bubble, but worse.
Aeao@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2d
Exactly. One silly use for ai I use is :
“I forget what season of game of thrones I was one before I stopped watching. I want to watch again. What season did I leave off on?”
AI: here’s theee events that happen in the show. Which do you remember?… okay now here’s three more events… okay you’re on season 4 episode 2”
I have no idea were else I could do that. I’m not willing to ruin the world for that feature but it’s a good feature.
It’s a tool like any other. Who uses the tool is the problem.

Now do how much water it costs to go to a Taylor swift concert. Don’t forget to account for her jet use.

More like being responsible for two thirds of all climate change, and ensuring nobody else can do anything about it.

ai cold concept, any source about this somewhere ? Thanks 🙏
Aeao@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2d
Sorry what exactly are you asking? that we are in a Cold War with AI?
The major world powers are racing to have the best AI for mostly defense and war regions.
China doesn’t want America to have better AI America doesn’t want China to have better AI.
Much like the Cold War and building the biggest nuke.
I’m not saying it’s proven whoever has the best ai will have a major advantage… but it appears everyone in power believes that is the case.
Much like the Cold War and nukes. Whoever has the best and most wins.

You should swap the colours around.
Donkter@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1d
Why?
yogthos@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 1d
Because red is a Marxist color, and relations of production being the problem is the position Marxists hold.
Donkter@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d
Right? The red guy is the one identifying the deception of the capitalist class to drive the proletariat away from their material interests.
