How good a guard dog is your dog?

I have a pitbull, she wouldn’t attack an intruder but she would bark, growl, and look scary while pissing herself. I’ve seen it happen.

Here she is living her best life at the beach.

My dog knows that he is not going to fight off any intruders. He generally takes a two pronged approach. First, rally all the humans in the house to take up battle stations. Second, if there are no humans he can use, he falls back to a charm offensive.

That depends if I'm home or not. Either way she sounds and looks terrifying. If she's by herself, as long as you don't touch her, you will be fine. If she thinks you're a threat to me, you're in serious trouble.

My dog has managed to make delivery people take a step or 2 back. It was always a completely friendly Hiiiii! However, he's 35kg and stands 6' when on his back legs. Our front door also gives him a 1' height advantage.

Suddenly being confronted with an excited dog, at eye level, while standing can make people jump.

This is Maverick. Maverick would let you break in and take whatever you wanted as long as you a) aren't a skunk, and b) kick his soccer ball for him a couple of times.

Now that I am aware of the dogs, what is the next step?

Luna's never met a person she didn't like, though she's pretty good at barking at anyone who comes to the door until she can see who it is. Even if its a stranger she'll stop barking and start wagging as soon as she makes visual confirmation.

She's an ol gal now and I've only seen her be genuinely in full defense mode a handful of times. Hackles up growling, or letting out a howl putting her self between me and the threat. I think every time was probably justified in her doggy mind as an extreme unknown situation. I always tell her though she doesn't protect me, I protect her.

Denali is a Husky / German Shepherd / Akita mix with blue eyes. He can easily stand and put hi paws on my shoulders. And he keeps a careful eye on what's going on outside. After seeing him in the window, no one in their right mind is going to decide that ours is the house they want to break into.

What isn't obvious is that he's a big sweet goofball who loves everyone, human and animal. As long as you didn't threaten any of his "people" he would probably be friendly. (If you did threaten any of his people, I don't think anyone would ever find the body.)
