Labour also need to keep “the markets” (i.e. a few rich sociopaths who could severely tank the economy and usher in fascism or civil war if they ever felt the need to make their strength known) happy. So if Burnham doesn’t want to preside over hyper-austerity, he has to keep the most loathsome predators happy, while figuring out how to eke out marginal gains for the voters and how to spin them into something that feels more substantial.

That would require labour to actually implement some progressive policies, you know like a left-wing party should do. Historically they tend not to want to do that.

I don't know why Lib Dem voters think their party is progressive. Last time they got a sniff of anything they sided with the Tories.
