The master of timing has done it again - stepping down while most of the cookers are playing referendum politics. I am in awe. I wonder who the cookers will protest about from now on. Not that reality features in their rhetoric.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 11 pts · 2y (8 replies)

They'll protest the Yes campaign.

Then if the No vote wins, they'll be celebrating white pride.

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 12 pts · 2y (7 replies)

the yes isnt gonna win. It should. But I'd bet a significant sum of money it wont. The federal governments entirely failed to rise to the challenge and let potato head kill the thing before it was born. I'd say Albo should resign, but the alternative is the aforementioned potato head.

EDIT: The yes vote I mean. No is clearly gonna win.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (6 replies)

If Albo resigns it's his deputy that's PM. I couldn't even tell you who that is right now. My understanding is that for the referendum it's has to majority in every state. I can't see QLD voting yes to be honest.

Thornburywitch@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 2y (2 replies)

Overall majority of all voters in Australia PLUS a majority of states have to have a majority YES vote. Not all states, just most of them. And NT & ACT and the islands aren't states for this purpose but do contribute to the overall score. So Vic, SA, WA, NSW, Tas, Qld - we can spare two states to the cookers as long as the overall majority is a Yes vote. We just have to do our bit.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y

It's the majority of states thing that makes me feel very pessimistic though. I think Yes would pass with a majority of voters across the whole country, but in essence the votes in big, sparser states like Qld and WA and to some degree SA have more weight and I think it is extremely unlikely that these three would have a majority Yes. Really don't know about NSW either. Vic would be the only one that I think is a safe Yes majority

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

Cool thanks for clarifying. I've got a bit more confidence in the vote now. Hopefully NSW pulls through.

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (2 replies)

Tbh I couldnโ€™t tell you who it is either. Sorry I meant he should call an early election.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Is it Jim Chalmers...? no that's the Treasurer. Who the fuck even is Richard Marles

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y

No idea, but it speaks volumes about the problem. or is it that the media just isn't giving them as much coverage? Labor do seem to have less "Shit the bed" moments to cover.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 15 pts · 2y (19 replies)

Jesus. I went out for one day being nowhere near media and this happens!

melbourne_wanderer@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 2y (5 replies)

haaa I was in a meeting with a bunch of people at 50 Lonsdale when news trickled in. That was fun! Meeting effectively abandoned, watched the announcement instead.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 2y (4 replies)

Wait, you work in my office building now?

melbourne_wanderer@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (3 replies)

nah, just a frequent visitor :)

(giving advice or asking for money, mostly! If I can swing a lunchtime meeting a bowl of pokรฉ never goes astray..)

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y (2 replies)

The Banh Mi joint at the Telstra building next door, is a solid lunch option too.

Those poke bowls have gotten much smaller since that pandemic. Was my go to lunch back then, but not anymore.

Oh I always get the bรบn at that place! delicious. Had meant to get that today, but there was a huge queue by the time I got there. Had my sad leftovers instead.

Okay, I am doing well at work. People are impressed I've jumped on inbound and doing outbounds within the first week and a bit. I'm good at it, and have much more to learn.

I'm very tired, but a weekly paycycle is such a blessing; as opposed to the curse of a monthly paycycle lol

landsharkkidd@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 2y

Meanwhile I'm over here grumbling with my monthly pay cycle...

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y

So glad to hear work is working out! And my god a monthly pay cycle is a drain. I don't mind fortnightly but gee, a weekly one's even better

VICTORY, MY FRIENDS!!! I have painstakingly upgraded this old phone to stock OS Android 10 (having to manually incrementally update from certain versions to another), upgraded everything and FLASHED A NEW ROM! Lineage 20 running Android 13! And bonus, thanks to the angels at XDA I have got root back on AND can still use my bank app and Google Wallet and have system wide ad blocking.

I will have to spend a decent amount of time later this week configuring the launcher and display etc. My only one stupid mistake was forgetting to use whatsapp's own service to backup messages to the cloud before doing all this; it apparently didn't detect wifi and hasn't done an automatic backup since the 22nd - and ye olde titanium backup can't restore data given that the app was running off such an ancient OS.

It all sounds silly but it really is a point of extreme and irrational inertia/avoidance updating things that substantially change the UI/UX of my phone (worse still changing the phone itself). This REALLY feels like dusting out the cobwebs and making a fresh start! :)

If I can get my banking and national login apps from my home country onto this phone off my iPhone (because that's the only thing it worked on), I'll be singing. e: banking might be a go, although again I stupidly should've disabled the digital token before all this, I'll have to sort it out in person in a few weeks. but national login is absolutely airtight, I might need to use a burner phone for the rare time I need that login thing. think mygov but on 30593095039403493094 steroids - I hate it, tbh, way too much info in one place.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (4 replies)

Ran into a major snag though I forgot to disable 2FA on my uber account and I've booked an uber carshare thingo for my trip next week. Authenticator app hasn't saved all the thingos. Can't for the life of me remember what my "backup codes" were. Hopefully they'll respond to my request for help

maniacalmanicmania@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (3 replies)

If my oppo was officially supported I'd use Lineage. Would be great if you could use banking apps on it though. It can be pretty handy to payid for stuff on the occasional times a merchant is down etc.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (2 replies)

Is it a really old model? Seems to be Lineage available for damn near every phone out there. I definitely appreciate having my banking app available when I need to transfer money - also for some godforsaken reason my bank only allows a particular type of savings account to be created from within the latest version of the app, not on the phone, not on the desktop, not even in person!

Biggest success was adding my card to Google Wallet. Took several tries

maniacalmanicmania@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (1 reply)

No it's only a few years old. But from memory it's not unlockable... just checked and it's still the case. Oh well, next time I need to replace a dropped phone I'll make sure I can get something that can be unlocked.

So your banking app works on Lineage? If so that's great.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 2y

Ah okay, that's really unfortunate. I use an older OnePlus that is insanely dev friendly (unlock bootloader from within the settings menu!! No waiting for the correct star sign and pressing the right button combo 0.0492049 milliseconds after boot...) I would've thought Oppo phones were not that difficult to unlock either but I guess they decided to lock down the less dev oriented devices (That said - I have no idea if recent OP phones are that dev friendly either).

Some day when this phone physically gives up the ghost I am going to try and find another OnePlus or Fairphone or whatever that can be easily unlocked.

I actually don't know if my Australian banking app works on unrooted Lineage. It very well might as it's extremely basic. My foreign banking app definitely wouldn't (I had to install a slightly older version to get it to work even with all the other root hide features). Google Wallet probably wouldn't have either.

I rooted my phone anyway for other reasons but I had read in the forums that some people had to root their phones in order to hide the custom ROM from those apps, even if they had no intention of using root at all! Which sucks for people wanting to just extend the lifespan of their phones that are EOL for official OTA updates.

careful, that's how my friend ended up with **two **cats. Lucipurr still holds utter disdain for Courtney, even though the ballectomy means he no longer serenades her from the screen door.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

Ahh, unfortunately I donโ€™t think itโ€™s on the cards. The thought crossed my mind but Melbcat is insistent on being an only cat, she pees blood when stressed, and the two were openly hostile on sight.

Despite no collar the cat also looks healthy and may belong to a neighbour who lets their cats roam.

Realised I donโ€™t really struggle with writing or art. I struggle with perfectionism, lack of energy, and attention.

Also the idea of sharing it (which is what initially made me want to create?) is really causing me to lock up.

Maybe Iโ€™ll just stop trying to create for others, retreat back to doing random landscapes and pictures of my cat.

Nath@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 2y (2 replies)

We took the boys to the Barbie movie today. It was hilarious! You probably need to have grown up with Barbie in your house to get some of the references. Our kids have not, I'm sad to say - so they missed a lot. All the Patriarchy stuff would have gone right over their heads, also. Hopefully, that word is now in their lexicons though.

They claim it was a good movie, so it obviously still worked at their level. My wife and I had a blast laughing at it though. Great family fun.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y

I loved it too, lots of references for a wide range of age groups (although I'd like to think Millenials get it the most!) - it was great fun, though quite emotional for me near the end with Barbie and Ruth.

I am starting to suspect that Ted Cat has not been separated from his balls. He is stinky ( male cat type stinky ) and his little scrotum hasn't shrunk like I thought it would. Thankfully he is not spraying. I checked his papers again and it says desexed but that might be a lie. I will give it another week and then it's off to Lort Smith to get tranks so I can handle and transport him and see what is going on.

Miss Seagoon sent me this video about smelly nebes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIPSwnHMmNE

Taleya@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 2y

Punkin got neutered as soon as he was weaned, so we don't get stankcat (bar one time when Misha had some misplaced aggression and I think he was more terrified by the fact his butt did that), but Cerys occasionally has her anal glands get epic af. Truly a delight (SARCASM HEAVILY IMPLIED)

Thornburywitch@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (1 reply)

I assume Ted Cat is no kitten, cos if he was then his balls may not have descended far enough when the neutering was done. He may have had a cryptorchid too. It does sound like whoever neutered him did a very poor job of it. Maybe hurried, or maybe the paperwork was done but not the neutering. He's purebred, isn't he, even though he's a rescue? Is that on his papers?

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

yes, he's a purebred catzilla, aka nebelung. The paperwork says neutered.

bananafungus@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y

Neutered fellas can still spray and get stinky, it might be the new environment upsetting him, so he's letting everyone know who's boss. As for the ball's situation, my dudes are still very visible because of his colouring/markings.

Two more SERIOUS PANIC!!! situations arose today with the phone just in the last hour - but within half an hour they were both resolved, and I can only think that maybe someone has been sending me blessings and putting in a good word for me with the universe.

::: spoiler peril! Firstly, just as I was walking to the chemist my entire body sank like a stone when I remembered my stimulant prescription was an e-prescription AND I DIDN'T BACK UP MY TEXTS PROPERLY. Cue panic and desperation as my prescriber is on holiday for 2 more weeks and I only have enough meds to last me for one. I'm thinking - I am SUCH an idiot, this means more hours of troubleshooting to figure out how to get those messages over... but then I had the most wonderful person at my chemist who was in fact able to find a way to access all my e-prescriptions by accessing some safe list thing! She could've very easily fobbed me off but no...

And secondly - as I was out panicking I realised mobile data wasn't working on my phone for some reason - thought alright, there's another bloody headache... came home, swapped the sim card to a different slot and that was all there was to it. Crisis! Averted!

:::

Chilling out with some Good Omens s2 with piles of dinner before I have a good shower and finish packing. I am really enjoying this season even more than the first, not just because of all that Jon Hamm...

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 0 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Ooh, I had to put this in a separate comment because it was so perfectly serendipitous there HAS to be something else going on.

::: spoiler woe! So I've renewed the search for my missing compact travel headphones for weeks, v frustrated as I need them badly when travelling on PT/plane - including tomorrow. Surely I haven't lost THAT? How many things can I mess up?

Dejected, I chucked my large unwieldy studio monitors in my bag, with the 1m long cable. On with the evening... was giving all the plants a pre-trip water but went a bit overboard with the ones in the study - sound of dripping water on the cupboard shelves five minutes later; oh no... Hastily move aside a dusty pile of stuff so it doesn't get wet. Way to go, me.

And then... I JUST happen to feel something cold and hard at the edge of the pile - what's this? A headphone connector! My beloved Audio-Technicas, this is how I was meant to find you after not seeing you for over a year!! :::

Never! Dark mode for everyone!

Dark mode is something you have to EARN! It is not for everybody. Respect their choices!

Starfield needed an update, okay sure. Only issue was it was hanging around 2.7mb of like a 11mb download. But still having a lot of issues and such, trying to get it to install. Cancel the update, etc. And then xbox decides to just... uninstall it. So now I have to install a 117GB file.

Fuck me.

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (3 replies)

it is SO bad on xbox its not even funny. Cant believe Microsoft let it be a flagship title when its STILL got all these stupid Bethesda Engine bugs.

landsharkkidd@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (2 replies)

I haven't had game breaking bugs, or glitches. There have been issues but I'm that part of the crowd where it's kind of endearing. But I also understand a lot of the issues others have. But it's just super weird that it's like "oh you're trying to stop this update? Well, let me just uninstall myself to save you the trouble". THAT'S NOT WHAT I WANTED!

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Really? interesting! I've had to close and relaunch a few times.

landsharkkidd@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 2y

I have had a few crashes but nothing bad. I mean I guess it's similar to CP77, I had a lot of texture glitches (similar with Starfield) but nothing game breaking. Others had game breaking bugs.

The case for the new phone arrived today, so I have transferred the sim over and it has been given Primary Phone status. My preferred alarm app is installed and alarms set, hopefully it wakes me up at the right time for work tomorrow.

I don't know why, but I'm always a bit reluctant to use new things for a while - some sort of combination of wanting the familiarity of what I am used to and being scared I will wear out the new thing and it won't be special any more.

I can relate to this so much! Feels a bit too precious.. Too suspicious as well... must observe it and occasionally bat it around like a nervous cat first.

I just went to a North Indian food van - Mitroo in Clayton - even before I ordered I knew it was good. It was in a taxi company parking lot and I was the only white guy.

Scheduled rest day from exercises today. Pizza day was pretty hectic and I'm super tired. I've had to buy a new phone, which I didn't want to do at the moment but my current phone won't even hold a charge for the whole day anymore. I just got a cheap phone from bigw, I have to go pick it up tomorrow and I'll take the Minipeelers for a little adventure.

Mr Peeler withdrew cash from an ATM at a servo and reckons it didn't give him all of the money, so that's something he has to sort out. Money's tight as it is; it's a favourite topic of discussion at work because all of us mums have had to take some days off with the kids being on school holidays. I'm trying not to feel worried or negative about the rest of the year.. I've got my 50th birthday coming up (I'm not doing anything because it'll cost too much), Mr Ps birthday, Christmas, the Christmas holidays (where I don't get work or wages for a couple of weeks) and the Elder about to start high school (new uniforms to buy and fees to pay). I'll work it out but it'll be a stretch financially and I guess I'm just feeling the pressure of being the only worker in the house with the family relying on me.

brave@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (2 replies)

You could try a battery pack/power bank for the phone. Very cheap and no where near as expensive as a phone!

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Good idea, I didn't think of that. I used to have a couple of power banks but they "disappeared." Oh well, at least the phone I bought is very cheap on special. I'll check out another power bank tomorrow, they do seem pretty cheap.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

Power banks are a life saver when you don't drive, I very strongly recommend one - huge peace of mind esp with the little tackers to think of. I'm still using one from ten years ago, it was a bit neglected while I had a car but has come in very handy several times since. A must have when travelling.
