Itโ€™s dangerous to go alone, take these 3 numbat joeys

Pocket size pals! Plus they'll clean up any termites in your clothing.

Itโ€™s my insane little idiotโ€™s Gotcha Day., but he refuses to pose with new toy. So hereโ€™s an old one. First day as office cat. a standard issue cat

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

That is a fine feline friend.

You inspired me to look up my own pets Gotcha Days. Mr Woof has his 10th Gotcha Day next year, meaning he will be about 12 years old - nearly a teenager! Miss Meow will have her 3rd in January, meaning she will be older than 3. The rescue I got her from told me was 6 months old, some of the paperwork had her as 4 years, and the vet that did her dental work thought she might be 2. And of course a lady will never divulge.

6368_39162@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

Dates mean what you wish them to. Many regards to Miss and her ambiguous teeth.

Can we talk about how bottled soda water is now $1.20 when it used to be 70c? Even at ALDI.

I didn't realise carbon dioxide and water have become so expensive.

FunkyClown@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 2y (4 replies)

If you drink it often you may as well get a cheap soda stream maker at that price. Less plastic wastage too.

6368_39162@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y

Seconded. I drink an obscene quantity of self bubbled water. They do do sneak things like change the bottle shape between charger types and formats to force new buys.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (2 replies)

I'm not sure if soda stream is cheaper, the bottles and the gas cannisters are expensive but yes, it's good that there is no plastic bottle waste.

Pilk@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

I did the numbers and I think you break even after about 60L of soda water, if your machine costs $70. After that each L of soda water costs you about 33c. This all provided that the machine doesn't break and you don't buy additional soda bottles.

Does take up bench or cupboard space though.

00Steve@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 2y

It pays itself off eventually

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (6 replies)

last time I checked Aldi was 99c, has it gone up AGAIN?

Pilk@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Actually I'm now wondering if it's partly the bottle collection cost??

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

Yes

Duenan@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (2 replies)

Yeah. Soft drinks and the basic home brand stuff at both aldi and colesworth are now 1.10-1.20ish.

Used to be 69-79 cents. :(

Lamb has catastrophically dropped in price - $10-99 per kilo from the butcher for a whole 12 kg lamb. At this time of year, probably two-tooth or hogget rather than lamb lamb but whooeee! Time to stock the freezer. Six months ago lamb was more like $26-00 per kilo at Colesworth.

bananafungus@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y

Pick up a bunch on the cheap the other day as well.

I think I read somewhere that farmers were culling in prep for the summer heat being insane this year, so the price is predicted to drop right down for a bit.

Nath@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

One of my fantasies while living in Melbourne (Through the worst of the Connex and the early Metro years) was to magically teleport Transperth trains and operations onto the Melbourne network for a month. The whole system. I know it can't really be done.

But to somehow show Melbournians how a train network could run in this country would really drive home how bad the trains were in Melbourne.

In related news: The train network in Perth was never privatised.

Was at Bunnings and noticed they have expanded their cleaning products aisle. Way cheaper than supermarket, especially the dishwasher tablets. Purchased some basil seedlings. Havenโ€™t had great success in the past, because they burn if too sunny, get leggy if too shady. Iโ€™ve selected a spot that gets morning sun and afternoon dappled shade, hopefully that will keep them happy.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y

The cleaning aisle is my favourite there.

dumblederp@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y

Bunnings are discontinuing the Gearwrench brand of sockets, spanners, etc. They're really good quality tools and about 30%-40% of the usual cost.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 2y (3 replies)

Melbcat is home! I'm concerned though.

::: spoiler Cat TMI, Poo and wee talk

ย

On pickup her the bottom of her carrier was saturated with urine that didn't smell fresh and there was some fresh poo in there too. The poo could likely have happened on the way home but I could smell the strong ammonia of ripe wee the moment she was carried out.

Wondering if she was waiting zipped into the carrier since the morning and then there was a delay because of a flat tire, but since it smelled a few days old at least, perhaps she was so stressed out during her stay that she repeatedly urinated in there because it smelled familiar. (Possible because there was a cat with dementia there repeatedly meowing.)

I commented on it but was in a rush to get her home. On getting home and actually checking there was so much in there, enough for it to be from repeated urinations as multiple layers of blankets and cloth nappies on top of the puppy pads were soaked through, and she'd dug everything up to pee through to the bottom of the carrier.

I was also really clear about avoiding fragrance and gave them unscented detergent to use if she soiled her things, but she's come home with spots on her fur smelling like perfume (which often rubs off the wrists of female vet staff while handling them).

She was also pretty hungry when she came home, going straight to the fresh biscuits put out and then demolishing a can and half of the 85g tins. Was she not getting frequent wet food and having to rely on dry, and was she struggling with that?

The owner talked about her staying in her carrier and only popping her head out to say hi, and mentioned the vet students were the one doing all her care. It's possible she was stressed out and hiding in her carrier for that time and because she's shut down and 'good' they didn't really check in on her? The place was extremely busy.

This cattery had really good reviews and I had got a good feeling when I talked to the owner in detail before sending her there...

Am I being unreasonable if I ask what's up? Ugh. I don't want to torpedo good relations as this place came recommended by her normal vet and the owner seemed really knowledgable about cats needs... It just feels like seeing your kid come home from childcare in a soaked nappy that they've sat in all day.

It worries me that Melbcat could have been in distress for that week but tends to be very quiet and 'good' when scared and maybe they were so busy they didn't notice what was going on. I need a place that's sensitive to her needs when I'm sick and can't be there.

Maybe I shouldn't have left her there for the entire time. Maybe I should have got her after a day or two instead of allowing her to stay to let her get used to it ๐Ÿ˜”

There are six of them but just five golden rings? One of them must be shirking.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

I don't know about geese, but it is definitely normally the way with chickens. They lay their eggs progressively later during the day until they skip a day, then start again in the morning. So five rings from six geese sounds about right.

Has anyone moved from Telstra Mobile to Aldi? Aldi uses the Telstra network, but I've read it's only their old equipment. Is the service acceptable?

I'm about to get the kid a phone for Christmas, and look like finally merging our phone service onto a family plan. The Aldi family plan with four sims is actually cheaper than what my wife and I are presently paying for Telstra/Optus. We've never merged our phone plans.

I'm tempted to get him the most basic Aldi plan. Hoping to teach him the importance of budgetting data - but even their $19 plan comes with 10 GB. I was getting by with 2 GB less than a decade ago.

Before I do anything drastic, will I regret this move?

bull@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (2 replies)

Here's everything you'd ever need to know about Telstra's MVNOs.

If you want to go hard-mode on budgeting data lessons, Boost's 12 month $230 plan gives the equivalent of 14GB for $20 per month - aka 170GB but gives you all of it up front, and it uses Telstra's full network rather than their wholesale network which Aldi, etc use.

I haven't used Telstra's wholesale network but if you're not going anywhere very remote I suspect it'll do just fine. You can see the coverage map and differences on the first link. I moved from Telstra to Boost and it's literally the same service, just cheaper.

One thing it doesn't mention is 5G which just looking at Aldi's website, requires a special expensive plan to access scratch that, but it still requires a higher plan than their 2 cheapest ones. Boost gives 5G no problemo.

Nath@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Boost's 12 month $230 plan gives the equivalent of 14GB for $20 per month - aka 170GB

Ha! This would be enough for me! And I am not careful any longer with data usage. I might go over 14GB some months, but I'd be under 10GB others.

It's also a third of what I'm presently paying Telstra. I really should have looked at this stuff at some earlier point.

bull@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 2y

I felt the exact same way when I switched lol

I just went to that 12 month plan 3 weeks ago. I looked at my data use each month and I'm WAY under because I'm always on WiFi so if I do go away for a holiday or something I'm free to hotspot without fear.

November had one weekend where I was hotspotting and streaming video for hours.

ReadEverything@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

We are on the family plan, coverage is good, never had any issues that I needed to contact them for. We have a LOT of rollover data now but I did have the kids restricted to a certain amount of data at the start.

dumblederp@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

Monitoring and managing a monthly data allowance might let the kid develop responsibility in their life. If they manage it well, maybe they can be trusted with more things? I gave my dad a 40gb sim and he watched youtube for two days on high rez then complained that the internet had stopped.

Usually, I do something like this myself, but my calendar is a little full at the moment, and to be honest, I felt like being lazy.

Pajero? Duuuude there is nothing wrong with a Pajero! Ever. They are the Corolla of 4x4's. My old man had one for 20 years, abused the shit out of it. Still ran no worries with over 350,000k on the clock, and that was the petrol version. The only time your mechanic is gonna call you and say something is wrong with a diesel pajero will be "sorry bananafungus, it needs a new starter motor because the old one was SLIGHTLY singed in the heat death of the universe"

Oh yeah, like I'm not actually worried, just silly over thinking brain doing it's thing.

I've already put two thousand k's on her since I picked her up a few months back, honestly find the ride more comfy then some of the Patrols my Dad had.
