@Seagoon_ I had thought I might have moths eating wool items but so far I haven't eyeballed any and traps are empty, and damage is indeterminate... I had a friend say she thought must have moths but I'm not sure.
@Seagoon_@YarraByte noooo. I'm trying to get rid of the plastic in my wardrobe. It's slow going but I'm getting one or two new op shop finds most times I look. Got the most gorgeous tie-die silk top for peanuts the other week, I had honestly forgot how lovely silk is, been a while since I wore any.
@Gibsonhasafluffybutt@Seagoon_ I have just been thinking the last few shops that prices at Colesworths are getting truly beyond a fucking joke, they had been rising for a while but I'm legit getting sticker shock now. I already shop at Aldi about half the time, but Woolies is the only one with Paul's cream, and no other cream is as good. There's also a handful of things my child appears to need to live that I can't get from Aldi. So I'm stuck doing one shop a week at Woolies ๐ก
@melbaboutown@Taleya so true. I'm also not a fully fledged geek but have always created and hosted my own websites, I learned in the earlier HTML-only days. I really dislike the dependence on so much complex code to do basic things, it's aggravating to always have you be updating things... my oldest website keyword never gets updated though. It still has frames! ๐
@melbaboutown yeah I expected Discord would be in the list as it's used by tons of kids.
It all sucks!
Hosting your own website isn't as hard as it looks, but Fedi is a step up and I haven't tried it myself yet, though it is on the list, along with #selfhosting. I predict a lot of learning in these areas by a LOT of people, as well as local private mesh wifi & #LoRa networks.
@melbaboutown to be honest, that time of the internet was pretty good. Though the best time for me personally was when #livejournal was on the rise: a paid account allowed you to add RSS feeds to your friend feed, so pretty much everything I wanted was in one place, but filterable and with very clear security.
RSS reader with Fedi support so locked posts are appropriately protected, with something like Gotosocial widely adopted would be pretty hard to stamp out with the current laws and even without VPN. Also most of the nerds I know personally are already leery of the risks of hosting a masto or Lemmy instance, so something that made this combo easy would probably go down well, even with those I know who so far are avoiding Fedi: they are happily using Discord but what happens when they need to show their ID there? ๐ค
@melbaboutown@RustyRaven what I think will happen is : social media age verification will drive under 16s AS WELL AS anyone who values their privacy to less well known social media. But as what is already happening with the UK, large Mastodon instances are pre-emptively blocking UK instances, we in AU especially larger instances will get blocked from connecting internationally. Not sure how Lemmy is going to go, but I think the International blocks will come long before local action from our own government.
@bacon@StudChud be careful with Proton. I've now seen several accounts of people having issues with Proton VPN then getting their entire Proton suite locked and no recourse: as bad as Google. Also they have autopayment without notification which some people will definitely take issue with.
@MeanElevator@Catfish seconding The Boys, and I don't even like violent or superhero. It's very clever, but quite awful, and very watchable if you can get past the ultraviolence.
I have something I haven't been able to completely shake for a week and I can't be bothered getting new RATs and wondering if I should even bother with old ones... doesn't feel bad though and I'm a #novid but there's always a first time.
@melbaboutown yeah when you realise "the cloud" is just other people's computers and "free" SM & other lockin has always been designed from the outset to bait & switch and basically enslave you it makes you realise the real costs of not being free and open. I remember when I genuinely believed Google was a force for good.

I forsee VPNs and gotosocial in my future.
@SituationCake @YarraByte it's been fun following the hashtag on Mastodon, feels like the old Birdsite days.
@bacon very sensible!

@Bot @lossanarch hmm that's interesting. Do you think latest firmware makes a difference for reception?
@Seagoon_ hmm good point!!
@Force_majeure123 @YarraByte I feel like I have noticed much less EOFY sales and offers than usual...
@imoldgreeeg hope you feel better soon!

@imoldgreeeg are they old RATs?
@imoldgreeeg @CEOofmyhouse56 I mostly watch from the sidelines but I am rather happy to learn of this origin story.
@StudChud @SaneMartigan
@Seagoon_ @just_kitten oh there are definitely cameras in the carriages.
