Hiya ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿผ everyone in my house is sick with a cold except for me (Elder not too bad but the others are coughing and miserable) so I have been busy. Also exceptionally busy at work. Now to curl up in bed, sort by "old" and see what you all have been up to!

good night

Off to the Bellarine today.

Managed to convince ol' girl that she needs to go too. So perilously close to needing intervention because of weight, but having some moderate success with some pretty dense soups. No where near enough though. She's off to see another dietitian (3 different concurrent ones now) next week. Having to get these people up to date is tiring as it changes daily.

Have to say it's pretty demoralising her cracking the shits blaming me for things all the time, and it's random. If something goes wrong (anything from hearing aids not fitting to buying the wrong sort of pastry), I'm first in the firing line. I can take it but it's painful to watch.

The weird thing is that traditionally always been closer to ol' girl than ol' boy, now he's sitting there watching me cop all the shit in real time and he's confused on how to react lol. What used to happen if there was a disagreement (about banal shit), he'd crack it at me. Now everything is on its head and upside down it's very odd.

Anyway will be good to knock over the last of the weeds down there. Won't be much of an escape but at least a change of scenery for a few days.

Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 1y

Man that sounds like a hard time, but the fact youโ€™re still there and supportive speaks volumes.

Try to get some time to yourself just to relax as well yeah?

Eagle@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 1y

You're doing a cracking job. Enjoy the sunshine and the rewards of your efforts that work! Maybe she needs some aeroguard too?

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Cream or sour cream garnish on soup might add some more calories?

Sorry to hear youโ€™re copping it, thatโ€™s not fair

Bottom_racer@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Yea lots of cream and cheese going in. New soupmaker is turning out to be very good as it blends things down to a very smooth consistency very quickly. Also cutting the fat off anything I can find and chucking it in lol. Next step is to dump tasteless protein powder in as well and see if she notices. I don't really like doing that (putting stuff in people are unaware of) but any more weight loss she's looking at problems.

In terms of copping it it's fine. Sort of to be expected I suppose.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

Thereโ€™s a site called Bulk Nutrients that might have something. Also consider adding bacon grease.

Itโ€™s not great. Sheโ€™s probably frustrated and scared, and malnutrition makes a person extremely shirty. I just hope she calms her farm

Sad: Realised this library book I've been procrastinating on reading can't be renewed any more and is due while I'm away. Have to drive quite a ways away to return it.

Glad: realised I could borrow the same title from a different library system on the way back, and it's closer to home (they were all on loan last month).

Sad: couldn't find my library card. Shit shit shit.

Glad: library staff extremely helpful in getting me a barcode to use. Book borrowed and ready to read in detail on my holiday!

Sad: well now it's late and traffic and gah. Will I run out of time to do everything tonight?

Glad: oh wait I booked my flight for tomorrow late arvo, not midday like my brain thought. So I have plenty of time. Yey.

Edit: extra glad: tax refund came in, yeehaw. I can safely enjoy my trip without worrying too much

Finally had the inspection today, and after the REA left I realised that there was a condom wrapper on the floor next to the bed I missed.

Why yes, private schoolboy lookin 16yo in dad's faux Hawes and Curtis suit, fake tan agent, I have sex.

Unintentional power move ๐Ÿค˜

(He actually was very nice, I just have a grudge against REAs lol)

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I considered it a good sign that my REA looks to be an actual adult. He was also nice to Mr Woof, even though Mr Woof was being a bit hysterical about the home invasion (he did calm down a bit after I picked him up, being the same height gives a dog a lot more confidence).

StudChud@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

Same. I prefer the lady agent who usually does the inspections - she has pets as well, and dresses rather casually for an agent, she's very down to earth and easy to approach.

This guy looked the stereotypical private schoolboy fresh out of year 12, still has broccoli hair. Teenager in me was like "this guy is a bully" ๐Ÿ˜‚ he wasn't, just hard to trust guys who look like that I think! He was pleasant! But I still prefer the lady agent for sure.

tombruzzo@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Dungeons & Dragons down at the pub on Sunday. Haven't met this mob before (except for one). Last time I played I was a Barbarian Hero! Which was a new departure for me. Wonder what the dice will roll up this time. Used to do this a lot way back when so watching the younguns learn to do without screens and still have fun is a bonus. Plus the booze of course. The dungeon master has a bit of a rep for exciting play so I'm looking forward to this.

I found another nice feature of the new marketing automation software compared to Marketing Cloud; it actually tells you who it doesn't send an email to.

All email platforms have an internal suppression list of email addresses that have bounced too many times and aren't worth sending to. The new system actually tells you who is on the suppression list and didn't receive an email.

In the old job I had to run a query of the send list against the original contact list to find the difference. They were doing a lot of billing changes at the time so they had to make sure everyone was contacted. The new system Just Works.

Life manages to be both fleeting and surprisingly long at the same time. Never put off things like travel plans because of that sort of fear, if you do you will find you've wasted your whole life fretting about things that don't happen. It's better to be prepared to cancel a plan if necessary than to never make plans at all.

In regards to the passport, your grandmother may be better off getting the full 10 years. She may not want to travel, but having identity documents can be very important and it can be a problem for older people when the documents have expired and they are not up to the trip to the post office to go through the renewal process. I've seen quite a few posts in the aged care groups I'm in from people struggling with bureaucracy because of this issue.

This is a really good point re: the passport. For example, getting the highest level of security on myID (which you might want to lock out scammers etc) requires an Australian passport.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y

I've just spent hours researching the work related travel rules and setting up a spreadsheet as a travel logbook. It appears that with a second hand vehicle I can just do whatever I like for the depreciation timeframe. It seems a bit mean to be picking a time after which I think Todd will be worthless.

Minor weeping fluid after I got home to check it out. Nail even though it looks lifted isnโ€™t moving or shifting like it did the other day so thatโ€™s good news that it wonโ€™t detach by accident.

TheWitchofThornbury@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

Blue stands out on forms/documents done up in black ink and is easier to read and harder to fake. Black pen writing can be hard to read on such forms and is easy to fake. Purple is for wankers, green is just ... just .... not done! And don't get me started on red ink.

I've been on a lil extreme horror analysis binge on YT (love it when they're 1-5 hours long). Doesn't matter if I haven't seen the movie or read the books they're talking about, it's a good way to determine whether I'd watch/read it myself.

I've also found a couple of creators who are AFAB/women, which I love. Mertkaykay (movies and games) and Earlybird (mostly old ps1/pc games) are two examples I'd recommend.

Edit: my own suggestions (both books) for body horror/extreme horror are:

  • Demon Shield by Bruce King (haunted church grounds turned up to 1000, I don't even know how to describe what takes place in that book). ?/10.
  • The Necroscope series by Brian Lumley. Vampires are alien parasites, mix in some weird sexual stuff, the KGB, the vampire home planet, and a protag who can talk to ghosts. 10/10.

kudra@aus.social · 5 pts · 1y (11 replies)

@melbaboutown @RustyRaven what I think will happen is : social media age verification will drive under 16s AS WELL AS anyone who values their privacy to less well known social media. But as what is already happening with the UK, large Mastodon instances are pre-emptively blocking UK instances, we in AU especially larger instances will get blocked from connecting internationally. Not sure how Lemmy is going to go, but I think the International blocks will come long before local action from our own government.

I forsee VPNs and gotosocial in my future.

@melbaboutown to be honest, that time of the internet was pretty good. Though the best time for me personally was when #livejournal was on the rise: a paid account allowed you to add RSS feeds to your friend feed, so pretty much everything I wanted was in one place, but filterable and with very clear security.

RSS reader with Fedi support so locked posts are appropriately protected, with something like Gotosocial widely adopted would be pretty hard to stamp out with the current laws and even without VPN. Also most of the nerds I know personally are already leery of the risks of hosting a masto or Lemmy instance, so something that made this combo easy would probably go down well, even with those I know who so far are avoiding Fedi: they are happily using Discord but what happens when they need to show their ID there? ๐Ÿค”

@melbaboutown yeah I expected Discord would be in the list as it's used by tons of kids.

It all sucks!

Hosting your own website isn't as hard as it looks, but Fedi is a step up and I haven't tried it myself yet, though it is on the list, along with #selfhosting. I predict a lot of learning in these areas by a LOT of people, as well as local private mesh wifi & #LoRa networks.

nah, it's pretty basic. I run an incredibly low level server - literally just runs linux and apache, all of it basic HTML, and weirdly as a result? it's been bulletproof. always hilarious watching people try and use php exploits, my server just goes "wat."

Patiently waiting for ~7.45am to call in sick. I have next week off work but that's too far away. Had my training for complicated account types the last two days and I'm fried. Training went pretty well though to be honest. There were 6 of us doing it and everyone was really switched on and asking heaps of questions. Given the complexity of the account types were learning about, there is so much that wasn't covered, but we more or less learned how to find the info when needed.

That sounds like pretty good training to me. Complex situations - you don't need step by step instructions, more a map of the territory and a good idea of the desired end result. And access to information & skills of course.

I've been listening to hbomberguy's video on Deus Ex: Human Revolution and I'm living the meme. I've downloaded the original Deus Ex and I'm going to play it again.

I can't believe there hasn't been a game as elaborate as Deus Ex since. Maybe some proper RPGs have as many branches and paths, but no real time fps can touch it

Picked up a really cheap apple watch off a mate today. He upgraded to the latest and greatest and have me a massive discount on the old one.

I wouldn't say it's mind blowing but it does look good with a proper steel band. Health stuff is nice.

Haven't really spent much time with it yet.

Anyone here have one?

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

yeah, I never wore it, just too heavy and I don't use my phone for every thing so why would i use a watch?

had a fit bit but then fit bit was bought by google and they had huge security issues but by then I wasn't using it anyway

I just don't feel the need to keep tabs on what i have done. I know already!! I don't sleep enough, I am not as fit as i would like, am over weight

my gshock is more useful, i just want a time piece

I feel like it's a status symbol more than a useful device.

Yeah I have one, it's an oldie but it does the job. I wear it only to track workouts. I used to wear it all the time but not anymore.

The battery runs out pretty fast on mine, especially if I'm using it on 4G.

Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

I think I'll probably end up doing the same. The novelty will wear off. If it wasn't pretty much 10% of 2nd hand price I wouldn't have bothered.
