Yarrabyte and Botbot have taken up a Life of Crime and are currently firebombing vape shops for fun and profit. You'll have to make do with me.

I have seen needles in the seat cushions of trams. You just tell the driver, who puts a sticky tape barrier over the seat and the one next to it and the cushions are replaced at the depot.

This week has flown by. Been super busy at work. Miniest got accepted into her choice of secondary school! (Big yay). She's also being allowed on her first school camp ever ๐Ÿ˜ณMr P got himself some new false teeth and now has to get used to them. Have been watching one of my personal favourite online communities (Imgur) become enshittified and have been looking for an alternative. Just warning you all that Imgur front page is full of NSFW and boobs as a protest, in case you want to specifically avoid that kind of thing.

imoldgreeeg@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 343d (1 reply)

It used to be one of my favourite places, but I deleted my account about a week ago. The newish mob that own it turfed out all the old staff and mods and are now "AI first". As a consequence stuffs breaking left right and centre and all the accounts that made it a community have skadaddelled it's gone fully rogue this week but I understand.

I liked the interwebs when it was for cute (non AI and not drugged for ease) animals and fun weirdos.

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 343d

Yeah the breakdown of notifications was the last straw for a lot of people. It's bad enough that the videos would load, half play and then freeze lol, but I was putting up with that because I loved some of the users. Now they aren't taking uploads from Ukraine. A few have set up discords but I hate the discord format, it's like 100 people talking at once.

Catfish@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 343d

Ha! I quit years ago when they banned NSFW. Was the only use I had for it.

Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 343d (3 replies)

What are they protesting?

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 343d

Imgur was bought by a company called Medialab ai, who sacked all the mods and tech support staff and pumped the site with ads. Edit: some stories that some much loved user/mods were sacked in sudden/nasty ways undeservedly. Some classic and old Imgurians accounts were banned. Posts were arbitrarily removed (ai mods now). Secret Santa was abolished. All NSFW uploads were removed by Medialab to make it more attractive to advertisers. They aren't accepting uploads from accounts which are Ukrainian. Some Imgurians are rebelling against the enshittification, others are just leaving and looking for similar sites elsewhere. There isn't anything quite like Imgur tho.

Taleya@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 343d (1 reply)

got bought by a new company who just wanted the image repo for AI training and are consequently banning and firing everyone and ploughing it into the ground.

Made it down the beach last night. Ended up building the 'puter. No mishaps. Certainly the fastest thing I've ever used.

Ended up going w/ win 11 ltsc. So far so good. No bunch of useless shit on there straight out of the gates.

And it's quiet even at load. Can hear the second hand of the clock in the other room when it's idle lol.

Only hitting 50c after an hour of prime95 which is wild. Obviously didn't bugger the thermal paste.

Now have to reinstall all the audio things which takes for ever.

Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 343d

And I hear you about the plugins/daw installations. Would love to do a fresh install but fuck all that lol

Currently tossing up whether to build a or buy a prebuilt PC. Current one I'm using I didn't build and it's a bit of a monster put together over a few years with the last upgrades done in 2019. Boyo just nabbed a prebuilt and it's actually a great machine.

StudChud@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 343d

My old PC, Athena (yeah I name all my devices), I built, and she was a beast. I'm currently using a pre-built PC (Minerva) as it was just easier than buying PC components and building it myself at the time (one bedroom prison cell in the CBD).

The pre built is a small machine, it's very easy to move around, and runs the vast majority of games I like to play perfectly. It's a bit outdated now (bought in 2020), but it's really good!

I bought it from Tecs Pty on La Trobe St in the CBD. Also got two gaming chairs from them, and wheeling them back to my apartment along city streets is a memory I won't forget ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

tombruzzo@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 342d

Keep an eye on Ozbargin for deals from Nebula and Techfast. They even post their prices vs PC part picker to show the prices you're getting

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 342d (17 replies)

my groceries are getting expensive, I notice there have been many price rises of 20-30%

from now on I'm printing out all receipts to keep track

tho looking at my pantry and fridge I am well stocked up , I could probably eat for 2-3 months and only buy some fresh fruit and veg

Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 342d (7 replies)

Rexona deoderant was almost 9 fucking dollars at Coles. Unreal.

Eagle@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 342d (5 replies)

That, Omo and dishwasher tablets are an on special purchase only.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 342d (3 replies)

same, so many of my purchases are bulk on sale only

for example, last week I bought 2 x 5kg bags of rice at half price

even so my costs are through the roof

after a discussion with husband we are shopping at aldi from now on, this should save at least $400 a month

Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 342d (2 replies)

Yeah I'm done with Coles and woollies. That's literally double what it was a couple of weeks ago.

kudra@aus.social · 3 pts · 342d (1 reply)

@Gibsonhasafluffybutt @Seagoon_ I have just been thinking the last few shops that prices at Colesworths are getting truly beyond a fucking joke, they had been rising for a while but I'm legit getting sticker shock now. I already shop at Aldi about half the time, but Woolies is the only one with Paul's cream, and no other cream is as good. There's also a handful of things my child appears to need to live that I can't get from Aldi. So I'm stuck doing one shop a week at Woolies ๐Ÿ˜ก

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 342d

Iโ€™m not having good luck because the Aldis I can get to donโ€™t really have what I can eat or use. Either allergens are included so I canโ€™t buy it, the item isnโ€™t sold, or thereโ€™s no generic option.

I do buy the Trimat unscented laundry sauce which I prefer and stock up on, the sunflower spread seems to be ok to eat, and the Prince deodorant roll on seems to be good. The soy milk is fine. I am able to eat one or two of the lolly bags if I pay what they cost.

But yeah due to unfortunately having different needs itโ€™s awkward to try and shop there, a lot of my staples just arenโ€™t covered

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 342d

Iโ€™m kind of glad I went back to hand wash because the Earth Choice dish soap costs $2 (ish) a bottle compared to dishwasher detergents

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 342d

Thatโ€™s fuckedโ€ฆ the Prince stuff at Aldi isnโ€™t bad

SaneMartigan@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 342d

I prepped a dozen dahl servings for 55c a serve the other day.

I mostly use canola for cooking to spite the seed oil people.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 342d (6 replies)

woolies on line used to have lists of your past shops with past prices, that way we could incidentally track prices, woolies stopped that, only current prices are listed

as I said, print outs are the only way

one example of sky high price increases

5 years ago a big tin of moro light olive oil was $22, it's now over $65

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 342d (4 replies)

Olive oil prices have gone absolutely mad. I try to buy aussie made EVOO when I can anyway. Top quality and generally cheaper than the imported brands.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 342d (3 replies)

the local ones are strong tasting, I just use oil for cooking so want very low olive oil taste

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 342d (2 replies)

Have you tried something other than olive oil for cooking? Coconut works well for many things, smoke point is a bit low, but not terrible.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 342d (1 reply)

I use sunflower, no way am I going to spend $65

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 342d

I use sunflower too or canola and get the own brand

TheWitchofThornbury@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 342d

Buy these tins when the new season oil arrives, and they are moving older stock out of the warehouse - half price easily. And plenty good enough for everyday cooking and non-salad uses.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 342d

Iโ€™m noticing it too. How the hell do I pay so much when I eat so little??

Book Review. Upheaval, Jared Diamond. It was a great premise, looking at the cultural qualities that determine resilience of countries but it was both not that insightful, sometimes wrong and dated. Don't bother.

Movie Review.

So it's no secret that one of my fave children's movies of all time is the The Witches, 1990. It's one of those movies I can quote and often do! I watched so many kid's movies when Miss Seagoon was a little Seagoon ) so I thought I would watch the remake. It's not even a kid's story, it's a parody of corporate culture. But anyway.

Loved it. I love how it is set in America, the casting is wonderful, the animation was aaaaawesoooome. Fun combination of effects and animation. The purple smoke was chef's kiss. It's changed up a little, the mice aren't turned back again. Not sure why not. I think the remake was careful to be religious, which was a wise move for America.

Alamutjones@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 342d (3 replies)

The mice stay mice in the original text as well, so in some ways (despite the setting change) this is a surprisingly faithful adaptation
