I heard someone say the other day that most of the time when there's a 'bad' technology it starts off as something good that everyone likes, and gradually becomes bad over time, like social media. But AI is something a bit more rare in that it came out and the majority of people didn't especially want or like it, but it really feels like it's being 'forced' into existence, so to speak. Which makes me think there's something else going on.

Not to be a menace, but do you have a specific source on the claim that that it collects telemetry on sideloaded books? In the Github link there's a line that says it "locks down telemetry" without elaborating further, I couldn't see anything else about it in the docs and a quick web search doesn't bring up anything about Kobo collecting telemetry on side-loaded books.

It'd just be nice to properly verify before I do anything.

Homage to Catalonia might be my favourite Orwell book. You can kind of see all the seeds being planted for his later more famous books in his experiences there.

Yeah there seems to be a bunch of religious fascist doomsday types that have been quietly taking over the US for the last 50 years or so, and Trump is just the latest symptom of that IMO. Getting rid of Trump or switching to the Democrats for 4-8 years isn't really going to make a lot of difference. Project 2025, Elon Musk, Peter Thiel etc. will continue doing what they're doing.

people have the right to consent to anything being done to their body or not, but also that consent can be given or rescinded at any time.

  • Challenge someone to a duel

  • Pistols at dawn

  • The instant they fire, yell out "I don't consent to this!"

  • Die anyway

  • They go to jail for murder

Take control of the media.

People don't like to admit it and they hate it when you say it usually, but TBH if you put something on blast on the news, most people will go along with it even if it's fairly crazy. Or at least, enough people to get what you want done.

There's a reason why oligarchs almost always buy some sort of media network once they get to a certain point of wealth.

I always thought it was weird that the year (aka Jesus' age) changes a week after his birthday. Like 2,026 weeks must add up to quite a bit.

Edit: just under 39 years apparently, so it should really be the year 1987 or 2065 depending on which way you want to correct it.

But I get it now, and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

He says, after literally wishing it on thousands and thousands of people for over a decade. And he is not experiencing their trauma. Regular people taken by ICE are often held for months, separated from their families, and sometimes deported to places they're not even from originally. He was held for less than a week and sent back to the UK to do the Piers Morgan right wing talk show circuit.

I cannot express strongly enough how thoroughly he can go fuck himself.

Yeah this is what he actually said...

"Today, we want to warn every airline that uses Russian airspace, every insurer, and everyone who still uses Russia’s key airports: Russian airspace is becoming completely unsafe."

"Ukraine does not threaten civilian aviation as such – not a single civilian aircraft. There will simply be drones in Russia’s skies on a scale that has to be taken into account"

"We in Ukraine do not want innocent lives to be lost. That is why we are warning our partners: the safe days in Russia’s skies are over. It is important that this is heard by the ambassadors of countries represented here in Ukraine, as well as by ambassadors working in Moscow."
