"We." Always a red flag when someone admits to participating in lolcow shit; buncha chuds bullying autistic kids online.

Edit: hey, all you chuds who are getting mad about this comment, you're not fooling anyone either, it's just other chuds telling you that you've done enough. "Edgy" isn't the same as bullying people to suicide because they're weird, that isn't normal teen behaviour, it comes from internalized values that you will still hold unless you actually address what you believe and why; just not bullying people online anymore isn't the same thing as learning to be better.

Saledovil@sh.itjust.works · 28 pts · 1d (17 replies)

The human brain doesn't fully develop until the mid twenties, and empathy is one of the last things that fully develops. So the nihilistic online edge lord culture is one you can genuinely age out of.

LordMayor@piefed.social · 20 pts · 20h (5 replies)

… empathy is one of the last things that fully develops.

That’s not true at all. If you didn’t develop empathy in preschool and have fully developed sense of empathy by middle to high school, you had some serious developmental issues or were raised in a bad environment.

That doesn’t mean middle and high school kids can’t be mean. That cruelty can’t be excused by undeveloped empathy. In fact, they most certainly know how the person feels and are intentionally making them feel bad.

Saledovil@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 20h (3 replies)

I said it doesn't develop fully until adulthood. Not that it isn't there at all until then.

LordMayor@piefed.social · 7 pts · 20h

And I’m saying it fully develops before adulthood. Usually, somewhere around 12 years old.

Seppo@sopuli.xyz · -1 pts · 9h

Those are not facts, but complete bullshit, and I think you know that. Unless you're citing sociology of course where everything is facts if you feel like it is.

searabbit@piefed.social · 6 pts · 21h (4 replies)

Both of those things are wrong. You should look up what the actual study on brain maturity concluded instead of regurgitating factoids online.

glimse@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 20h (3 replies)

The factoids might be wrong but the conclusion isn't. Most edgelords age out it

orioler25@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 16h

I honestly haven't seen evidence of that, most of them certainly learn that the behaviour is looked down upon and may feel guilt over it, that isn't the same thing as growing out of it. There's a very large number of people whose morality is oriented around whether or not they're caught, not honest, vulnerable interrogation of themselves and committing to change.

orioler25@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 21h (2 replies)

Its obvious when you guys are making excuses for yourselves and passing it off as some act of empathy or understanding. That's also just false, btw, and I never wanted to hurt vulnerable people even when I was young.

I think you underestimate how long the term has been around, and I've hidden nothing. I accept the shitty person I was. Have you confronted your deficiencies as a human being?

orioler25@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1d (25 replies)

I know how long the term has been around bud, we haven't even had this internet shit fifty years for fuck's sake. If you accept the shitty person you "were," why did you just produce a cruel estimation of some other person online just because you found their behaviour cringe again? This is the kind of "acceptance" people adopt when they feel guilt but don't want to change. It's also so telling to write off actual malice and cruelty in such a fundamental way as "well we all do had things." No, I've never had the inclination to treat a vulnerable person badly, go figure.

And lol, lmao, yes. Which is how I can see straight through this kind of bullshit.

Gullible@sh.itjust.works · 22 pts · 1d (24 replies)

I want to congratulate you for having a normal upbringing, then. I'm not going to offer anything identifying, because I'm not an idiot, but I grew up surrounded by corpses and continued to develop elsewhere in a state of nihilism and rage bred by a family, myself included, in the throes of constantly triggered ptsd. You do not understand enough to judge an internet stranger by their arbitrary admissions. Your scope of understanding is limited by the offense you've taken and your frame of reference.

And It's not just "cringe." It's an extreme social trespass and transgression to, and follow me on this, tell someone to break up with their partner because of an llm's estimation of your desires. Whether satire or not, this person fits within the fringe groups. I'd otherwise call them an incel, but they seem particularly unhinged. Which pejorative do you prefer for a person who parasocially adheres to someone and decides upon their future? This is like defending pedophiles under the umbrella of lgbtq.

FrowingFostek@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 1d

I'm glad you're a better person now.

orioler25@lemmy.world · -12 pts · 21h

Bud, I am not the person to use some sob story to justify cruelty, I know it doesn't. It may explain it, but you're using that to rationalize it. The fact you once again just resorted to "you're too sensitive," as a fucking excuse for yourself it another good s indicator that no, you haven't addressed the issue.

This also isn't an incel...and it is so interesting that you took that opportunity to try and obscure and reduce the harm that incel culture causes to justify making fun of some cringe. I wonder why that'd be. The queer comment was also just straight up bigoted again, we all know that isn't comparable and it's once again telling that you think it is. Oh, is it worse to be weird than an actual fascist? Strange.

I see you dude, not because I'm a mind reader or whatever you wanna pretend, but because you're saying things that reveal fundamental values and it's obvious you didn't realize that.

I believe they took offense, leading them to act uncharacteristically. I firmly believe that they are a good person. Weighing someone unaccustomed to being in the middle of an argument, while they feel unsafe, certainly isn't fair to them.

And make no mistake, 9999 times out of 10000, they'd be right to take some amount of offense. Their chosen verbiage just triggered a landmine.

But thank you, it's kind of you to affirm that I'm not 200% dead puppies all the time!

SailorFuzz@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 17h

Dead puppies aren't much fun.

orioler25@lemmy.world · -2 pts · 17h

It's completely in character for me to challenge fascists when I see them. You people seriously have to develop a more nuanced understanding of yourselves. Just because you know something is wrong without knowing why, doesnt mean you've stopped doing the wrong thing. Good people aren't just people who are lucky enough to not make bad decisions, it's about fostering the discipline and accountability to interrogate your actions and challenge their underlying harmful values; you clearly have not done that work.

RVGamer06@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 14h

Considering the circumstances in which the term was originally coined, i don't think so.

orioler25@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 17h

Bud, just because it sometimes happens to bad people, doesn't mean it is not wrong to reproduce cultural norms that target vulnerable groups of people. "Lolcow" was used to refer to autistic people online pretty much exclusively, and the cruel culture behind it has literally resulted in multiple suicides of completely innocent if unpalletable people. This commenter went on to say actual fascist shit to defend this, and that isn't a coincidence.

You can tell the demos of this site based on shit like this. Yeah, I'm sure a bunch of you were edgy teen boys and you want to pretend that was okay (or even natural) because you were kids and "didnt know better," but subscribing to bigotry as an adult clearly shows that you don't understand why it was wrong, just that it was wrong.

Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 14h (3 replies)

There's a stark difference between accountability and what you're doing, which is insisting that no one ever gets to improve their behaviour or learn from their mistakes. That doesn't make a better world, it makes the worst possible one.

If people can only ever be as good as the worst thing they've done, then why should anyone ever aspire to be anything better than the worst possible version of themselves?

orioler25@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 10h (2 replies)

I said this cringeshipper behaves like an incel. And I continued by telling you that you do not understand what an incel is in the same way that I did not understand the harm in my words.

and that the problem with “lolcow” is that it’s a mean word, not that it’s fucking bigoted with a violent history.

Not what I said in the least.

Also a lot of gaslighty “I’ll take the higher ground,” bullshit without even acknowledging how fucking fascist that is.

I was preventing people from flaming you by contextualizing your feelings in a way that would allow them to exit the conversation. Which I do not regret, considering the horrendous trash I just read from you.

Your deradicalization attempts seem actively antithetical to your goal, considering I've now seen you attempting to start flame wars with like 6 separate people who did not grow up in the state of privilege necessary to sustain your Abelardian moral complex.

I acknowledged my shittyness and you responded with smugness and wandered off. I saw you tell some guy that he is the sum of all of his moral failures- that they have no hope of redemption because they were a cruel teenager. What the fuck is wrong with you? That's some incredibly harsh, unabashedly destructive and dishonest conversation that most people would not tolerate, let alone improve from.

You speak like a human being untouched by light and I say this with the utmost concern for you and the people you're speaking to, you need to touch grass and talk to actual people before you can even consider deradicalizing anyone. My fucking word.

orioler25@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 6h (2 replies)

Dude would you shut the fuck up about privilege? I know for an absolute fact that not being privileged doesn't make you any more likely to be cruel or any less able to fucking learn the actual morality behind your actions.

I did not fucking say anything close to that. I've told people like you, fuckin men, that they actually have to work at addressing why they did something bad and actually change their values, not just fucking say that it was bad and they don't do bad things now and think that's the end of it. That so many of you have read this as "there's no hope for change," is exactly my fucking point, and it isn't for you dickheads it's for the dozens of other people I've seen come across this thread. You have any idea how much harm men like you cause? Shut the fuck up about having a hard life and how sorry you are just fucking do the values if you've addressed them so effectively.

You didn't today, and you don't get to decide when other people should be fine with your behaviour, which is another reason you have to take accountability for it, not just guilt. I'm also correctly picking out these abuser flags, whether you like it or not. You said some bigoted shit and then followed that up by openly admitting that you don't think incels are really all that bad, only just as bad as this weirdy this post is about; its a fucking genocidal cult that has successfully propagated a distinct form of scotastic terrorism and is responsible for hundreds of mass murders.

Shut the absolute fuck up dude, you are a piece of shit, not for the shit from your past, but because of your refusal to address the way you understand things today. If you really got it, understood what you did wrong, you'd have made it clear above that you seriously devalued women and disabled people today, but you didn't, did you? No, you just tried to act like you were a more level headed and moral person already. When that didn't work and you didn't like how I was telling other people about you, you send this shit like you're doing something. Go look up what abusers do after gaslighting fails.

I'm being serious when I say I see you dude, you're not a complicated person, and I know that sucks because you really thought that made your actions more justifiable, didn't it?

Edit: a very fun read indeed: https://www.domesticshelters.org/articles/lists/18-things-abusers-do-when-they-re-gaslighting

Gullible@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 5h

Dude would you shut the fuck up about privilege? I know for an absolute fact that not being privileged doesn’t make you any more likely to be cruel or any less able to fucking learn the actual morality behind your actions.

You genuinely know and understand none of what I was communicating if this is your takeaway. You lack any degree of necessary context about the world to speak on the topics you pretend to understand.

I did not fucking say anything close to that. I’ve told people like you, fuckin men, that they actually have to work at addressing why they did something bad and actually change their values, not just fucking say that it was bad and they don’t do bad things now and think that’s the end of it. That so many of you have read this as “there’s no hope for change,” is exactly my fucking point, and it isn’t for you dickheads it’s for the dozens of other people I’ve seen come across this thread. You have any idea how much harm men like you cause? Shut the fuck up about having a hard life and how sorry you are just fucking do the values if you’ve addressed them so effectively.

Not a man, by the way. I never cared to correct your assumption because it wasn't relevant and you seemed to be having fun saying it. Morality is based in, and relies on having role models capable of offering this information. You conflate improvement with perfection. You literally know nothing about social development and your ability to grasp that is nonexistent. Do. better.

You didn’t today, and you don’t get to decide when other people should be fine with your behaviour, which is another reason you have to take accountability for it, not just guilt. I’m also correctly picking out these abuser flags, whether you like it or not. You said some bigoted shit and then followed that up by openly admitting that you don’t think incels are really all that bad, only just as bad as this weirdy this post is about; its a fucking genocidal cult that has successfully propagated a distinct form of scotastic terrorism and is responsible for hundreds of mass murders.

I never said that what I did was okay, and I'm not interested in your acceptance, I'm interested in that of the disadvantaged people I work and live with. You make assumptions like an old republican watching an immigrant laboring in public. And once again, you don't understand what an incel is. You're describing someone who partakes of incel culture. There are no good people in incel culture. You can do nothing but conflate and misunderstand because your cursory understanding is worthless, which is why I tried to have you ask questions instead of shouting at me like an idiot about a topic you know too little about.

Shut the absolute fuck up dude, you are a piece of shit, not for the shit from your past, but because of your refusal to address the way you understand things today. I’d you really got it, you’d have made it clear above that you seriously devalued women and disabled people today, but you didn’t, did you? No, you just tried to act like you were a more level headed and moral person already.

I covered this already, but you conflate improvement with perfection. Which is something that you need to work on.

Your adrenaline ran incredibly high and you physically cannot comprehend what I have been saying to you if half of this is your takeaway. Between that and the open, festering trauma wounds, there is tremendous work to be done because this early 20s speaking at people in a stress fueled stroke risk state isn't serving you. Were I actually interested in harming you or anyone else, I would simply continue speaking to you to induce your premature death via brain bleed. You are actively killing yourself, you beautiful idiot. Don't give me or anyone else that.

Yume might be related to the Japanese for dream? 夢 I have no idea, though.

betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world · 78 pts · 1d (4 replies)

Weirdo likes to imagine that they have a relationship with the person who originally posted the screenshot with the messages. They're asking the real person to engage in their fantasy by breaking up with another (probably) real person because weirdo's chatbot of them said they would.

F/O in this case is fictional other, a play on S/O for significant other. Yumeship is a dumb word for jerking/schlicking fantasy stuff.

Lumidaub@feddit.org · 19 pts · 1d (2 replies)

Addendum: "yume" is Japanese for "dream". They dream of being in a (relation)ship with the other person.

We used to call that "self-ship", I'm pretty sure ("I ship myself with xyz") but maybe the difference is that this is not about a character but a real person? Which would make it real person shipping which I think most people agree is a dubious pastime. Did I just argue myself into saying having a crush is problematic? I need sleep.

DokPsy@lemmy.world · 19 pts · 1d

It stops being a crush when you actually tell the crush to break up with someone because it ruins the fantasy you've created with them para-socially.

zqps@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 21h

Shipping goes far further than having a crush, it's acting out the fantasy of being in a relationship with them. Or a fictionalized version of them usually. That's fine if the character is already fictional, but really creepy and invasive in regards to a real person.

A fan of a voice actor has decided that they are in a relationship with the VA's character (yumeship). It brings to mind a couple ST: TNG episodes, too. Geordi had a similar experience when he had the computer generate some physicist to help him deal with some warp issue and then met the actual her (who was married and a lot less warm with him) later on.

And Bartlett's (was that his name?) introductionary episode, though his only has similar subject matter, as he wasn't trying to bring the fantasy to reality but it came to light anyways when his addiction prompted an intervention that became awkward af.

Barkley?

Buddahriffic@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 10h

Closer than I was, it was Liutenant Reginald Barclay.

And the actor was Dwight Schultz, which at first I thought was a hallucination from the search assist but IMDB agrees.

And when I asked if "the office character" was deliberately named after the actor, it informed me that no, Creed Bratton (played by actor Creed Bratton) wasn't named after either the actor's or character's name. Then a follow up question informed me that the office character was Dwight Schrute, not Shultz, so that character probably also wasn't named after him.

Being bad with names can sometimes be more hilarious than it should be.

I think this is bait, no?

It's just such a perfect storm of terminology, that I can only see it as deliberate.

  • yumeship, so dream shipping, where shipping usually means to imagine a relationship in a text that might be subtextual, or even fully imagined.
  • uncomfy/gen, so the usually not very serious gen z term uncomfy for uncomfortable, but then paired with the tone indicator /gen for geniuine.
  • F/O, so fictional/other, a fictional character you ship yourself with, but here applied to a real person they are actively talking to (more "at" than "to", I guess)
  • character ai, so the LLM that is configured to produce output similar to a character or person.

But still, poor Willow, that seems like a very shitty thing to receive.

genuinely concerning blurring of reality and fiction

Mental illness, very much like what it pictured in the post.

GenAI has already made this worse. It's not essential to LLM technologies, virtually the whole industry makes their LLM's generation patterns so deferential that they worsen the reality-breaks of people that interact with them enough, very much in a "Folie à deux"-style (tho, there's no "deux" there).

They would comment on my art page complimenting my art, and I always replied saying "thanks", and we never interacted beyond that. We definitely never met IRL. One day I woke up to hundreds of DMs from him that sounded dellirious, that they would like to be my partner and that he had "deeply analyzed my art and he knows me for real". Very unsettling and creepy stuff, spiraling into self-hate. There are some real troubled people out there, and now they have access to AI's allucinations to feed their own, sadly.

Good advice, thank you. And this is why I hate JK Rowling. We had a perfectly good word for non-magic-users, and then she went and started a crusade to exterminate trans kids and we found out the books were super racist and ableist and bad. And now I'm not comfortable using her word, but I don't have any good words for non-mages, so I'm using these other words that have other side effects I don't intend. I wish I could say "muggle" in good conscience.

glimse@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 23h (7 replies)

What word did she co-opt for non-magic users

Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works · 13 pts · 22h (6 replies)

They're not saying that Rowling co-opted anything. They're saying that they used to use the term "muggle", lifted from the HP books, as their go-to term for "non-magical people", until Rowling went full mask-off TERF.

Which does mean that they lifted a term that is literally used in the books as a slur, and were like "OK, yeah, this is a good way to describe people who don't share my interests."

glimse@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 22h (5 replies)

Ahh ok,. I remembered muggle was a slur in HP (Hermione cries because [mean blond kid] calls her a mug blood) and assumed they couldn't be talking about that.

I made this assumption because I have this user tagged as "Narcissist is a slur." And I remember why.

So my understanding is that it's a good thing to use a fictional slur when the only definition for the word. But also, it's a very bad thing to use a word based on a character from a Greek myth who exists solely to convey the idea described in the definition.

Grail@multiverse.soulism.net · 0 pts · 18h

Narcissus of Greek myth never abused anyone, unless you count fighting back against Ameinias, who sexually harassed him. While he was 16.

kolmaskommentoija@sopuli.xyz · 1 pts · 23h (8 replies)

Yeah fuck Rowling, that piece of human garbage. It does leave a bad taste in your mouth, these days... The only English term I have figured out, that is usually understandable in the context, and triggers no negative connotations, is just "non-practicing". Which then, is really inconvenient in form.

Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works · 9 pts · 21h (7 replies)

The thing is, even without Rowling ripping the mask off, muggle was always a fucked up term to use in this context because it's literally describing a group of people who are treated as second class citizens on the basis of an immutable biological characteristic, a situation that is basically never interrogated throughout the books. The fundamental ideological divide between the villains and the heroes is basically "We should enslave or exterminate the muggles" vs "We should treat the muggles like unfortunate idiot children." In retrospect, it wasn't actually all that surprising that Rowling turned out to be a gender-essentialist (and I do say that as someone who used to be a fan).

Sidenote, this is why Witch Hat Atelier absolutely kicks the pants off of Harry Potter.

kolmaskommentoija@sopuli.xyz · 4 pts · 20h

Oh, very good call out. I was not even thinking about the negative associations with muggle! Just straight up jumped, without thinking, at the chance to insult Rowling.

Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 10h

Genuinely incredible. Imagine if Studio Ghibli said "Fuck it, we're doing TV now." That's the animation and directing quality in every episode.

Grail@multiverse.soulism.net · 2 pts · 18h (2 replies)

I agree in the context of HP, and I also love Pointy Hat Studio.

But in this context, "muggles" are the people with the social power. Elsewhere in this thread, someone has said "you need psychiatric help if you think magic is real." So sanism and stigma against mental illness are being used to enforce an ideology that denies the cultural experiences of magic users. Those are the actions of the privileged majority.

And our world is more like Pointy Hat than Harry Potter. Because anyone can learn magic. And unlike in Pointy Hat, it's not a secret. Or at least, the secret isn't being kept by us. It's being kept by capitalists. If you want to be a mage, you can just learn magic. I'll even teach you if you want. In fact, here's a link to a spellbook you can read for free: https://usermanual.wiki/Document/PsychonautFieldManualSmall.49336827/view (disclaimer: Archtraitor Bluefluke is a good teacher but has problematic views on chakras and cultural appropriation. Please skip the chapter on chakras, it is a closed tradition. There are plenty of open spells you can learn).

So I don't think "muggles" are being oppressed in our world, and I don't think it's possible for there to exist a meaningful slur against non-mages.

Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 16h

Here's the thing; at no point did anyone suggest that real life "muggles" are some kind of oppressed class or that you were engaging in some bold new category of '-ism' by using that term. You can use whatever word you want for "people who don't do magic." No one really gives a shit. But if your purpose in using that word was to entirely divorce of it's original context as an oppressive term for a biologically distinct underclass... Why use the word? Why not just invent a completely new term instead? If it's going to mean something almost entirely different, why carry over those associations?

Now, this is the point where the sane thing to do would be to say "Honestly, at the time when we co-opted the term we just hadn't done the work of interrogating how messed up the original context was," and I would completely respect that. Because as I have just stated, I was a fan of those books too. I also let a lot of stuff slide that I really shouldn't have, and it wasn't until later that I went back and re-examined the material and started to really piece together just how fucked up Rowling's worldview is, even as expressed in the context of her children's stories. So I'm just as guilty as anyone else is in that regard. None of this is a call-out, just a call for further examination.

Anyway, thank you for the offer of the primer, but if I want to learn more about spellcasting I have at least a dozen or so friends I can consult for their expertise on paganism, heathenry, witchcraft, or chaos magick. None of whom have ever tried to use the terms "chakra" and "sephirot" interchangeably, which suggests a deep misunderstanding of either tantra, kabbalah, or both. Lovely art though.

We don't know what OP was like as a young 20-something nor what she went through in life since then, but there are so many ways people can change and grow into themselves, to become proud of the adult they've become.

Just because she said "woman" instead of "adult" doesn't mean there's any sexual intent, and it's frankly fucked up that simply indicating her gender is enough to put your mind into the gutter.

Allow me to assist.

yumeship = yumejoshi (Japanese slang term for a girl who inserts herself into a fictional story) + ship (fandom term used to refer to two characters getting into a relationship) = the act of imagining a fictional version of oneself getting into a relationship with a character from a piece of media one enjoys

uncomfy/gen = uncomfy (you can guess) + /gen (tone indicator that means the previous statement is genuine as opposed to joking or sarcastic)

(by the way a tone indicator is a well-known sequence of letters appended to a text message to communicate the intended tone, like /s for sarcasm, /j for joking, /gen for genuine, etc., used to communicate through a text medium what would otherwise be conveyed through tone of voice. Traditionally they're appended to the end of a message, not used in the middle of a sentence. I've never seen a tone tag applied to a specific word before. The author also seems to be using it as an intensifier, which... huh?)

canon = (adjective, applied to a statement about a fictional world) confirmed in the text of a fictional work, or by the author of said work in e.g. an interview, as opposed to made up by fans (in this case, used rather disgustingly to refer to something that is true in real life as opposed to a fictional setting)

F/O = Fictional Other = Fictional + Significant Other

c.ai = character.ai = a website where users can converse with LLM chatbots that pretend to be fictional characters. Anyone can create and finetune such a chatbot (by starting with a blank slate character and interacting with it and telling it how it should act) then making it available for others to use, and a lot of users create chatbots that imitate real people. The website doesn't really crack down on this.

Essentially what the person who sent these messages has done, is gone to character.ai, looked up a chatbot that pretends to be a real Internet celebrity, convinced themself (I think?) that the real Internet celebrity was a fictional character (or at least could be thought of in those terms), talked to it until it told them that it was in love with them, concluded that the real person the chatbot was pretending to be was also in love with them, and confronted said real person with this information, expecting them to make the fictional relationship real. It's a textbook parasocial relationship, except for the part where the non-celebrity wasn't listening to things the celebrity was saying, they were listening to things a chatbot pretending to be the celebrity was saying.

Rather than responding, the real internet celebrity who received the messages took a screenshot of them and made a post conveying their disgust that any of their fans felt entitled to act that way, and a screenshot of that post is what you're seeing here.

Oh I see you knew that already lol

FluidBeef@quokk.au · 16 pts · 1d

They did it. They finally broke English.

billwashere@lemmy.world · 30 pts · 11h (7 replies)

I’m too old to even understand what half of this means.

hardcoreufo@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 10h (1 reply)

Half? I didn't understand any of it. The words mostly made sense but their usage did not.

RBWells@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 9h

That's a pretty succinct description of AI. We are required to use Copilot at work (not kidding) and I always have to remind myself that AI use language the way demons do in Frieren - they don't have intent or intelligence really but use it in an approximation of language. It never really means anything.

DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 10h (3 replies)

You're not alone. I'm 60, I try to keep up, if only for entertainment's sake, but stuff like this just goes right past me.

mig@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 9h

Alright, 40s here, I'll try. I assume OP is some kind of social media figure with a following. "Ship" means having a parasocial or imaginary relationship with a public figure, like a kpop star. I think fandoms often "ship" imaginary charactors together, like 2 charactors who are not in love in the original material of an anime.

So she's saying break up with your girlfriend because I imagine us together. Take down your photos because I'm jealous your other fans will look.

Then she's talking about a parasocial relationship she has with an ai chatbot she has trained upon OP's likeness and data. She's saying her chatbot version of OP told her to go ahead and contact OP with these psycho demands.

How did I do?

billwashere@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 9h

Yeah 55 here. I would under if I could use AI to translate 😂

Bluescluestoothpaste@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 10h

There's a lot of typos i think

abigscaryhobo@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 6h

Remember Molly Ringwald's stalker? Well in this case this person had an AI using this person's faked voice pretend they were in a relationship. He wanted to tell her to break up with her partner and delete photos of herself so he could be the only one to see her. The AI told him to tell her this directly, and he did. Dude needs help.

Sanctus@anarchist.nexus · 26 pts · 1d (6 replies)

That is psychotic behavior. OP probably actually is in danger.

Grail@multiverse.soulism.net · -13 pts · 1d (5 replies)

Not what psychotic means, please don't connect mental illness and abuse like that.

Feathercrown@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 18h (4 replies)

This post is indicative of both so it fits

Grail@multiverse.soulism.net · 4 pts · 18h (3 replies)

Psychosis is characterised by paranoia, I don't see paranoia here.

This person's perception of reality (as in hard facts) is intact. Their use of the term "F/O" confirms it. Where they differ from others is in their perception of norms, ethics, and other people's feelings. Which, to be fair, we can also consider part of "reality" in a social constructivist sense. Nonetheless, this behaviour would not meet the standard criteria for a delusion. This is actually an obsession and a severe lack of boundaries and empathy.

I don't think this person's mental illness has been discovered (or arguably, invented) yet. If we adopt a more dimensional approach rather than categorical, I would say this person is suffering from a social impairment, rather than a perceptual impairment. So, we're looking more in the realm of something like autism, plus a severe attachment problem.

But that's none of My business, because I'm just some rando. Nobody in this thread should be speculating on this person's mental health. We're not their doctors. We need to focus on their actions, which are gross and bad.

T156@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 7h

It could also just be immaturity. They've not yet figured out how to draw the boundary between fantasy and reality, and separate their idealised character from the VA. Or what things may be better kept to themselves.

Feathercrown@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 18h

Hmm. Ok, fair.

AlcoholicPenis@futurology.today · 0 pts · 12h

What are you on about? This is a classic case of AI psychosis and delusional thinking, unable to differentiate fact from fiction. Something you seem to have trouble with as well. They are absolutely mentally ill!

RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world · 24 pts · 13h (1 reply)

OP, could you maybe repeat this in English? Thanks.

VitoRobles@lemmy.today · 8 pts · 12h

Right? This is 'Oh you're clinically insane I'm not listening to you".

AlcoholicPenis@futurology.today · 21 pts · 15h

This is what AI use does to your brain. It turns you into a raving schizoid lunatic with delusions about reality.

atrielienz@lemmy.world · 21 pts · 1d

Taking para social relationships with people we have never met to a whole 'nother level.

FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 19h (2 replies)

This barely makes sense.

DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 10h

Methinks you underestimate.

Smaile@lemmy.ca · 17 pts · 19h (2 replies)

This is a broken person, idk if they can be fixed.

CaptPretentious@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 17h

They can. Therapy, meds, and removal of access to the internet, and a focus on grounding them to reality.

AlcoholicPenis@futurology.today · 1 pts · 12h

Put em in a straight jacket and lock em in a padded cell. That way they can't hurt themselves or others.

SailorFuzz@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 1d

bilouba@jlai.lu · 14 pts · 21h (1 reply)

captainlezbian@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 17h

Even as a joke it'd be horrifyingly inappropriate to send that

Hawanja@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 12h (1 reply)

Wtf does this all even mean?
What the hell is wrong with kids today?

AlcoholicPenis@futurology.today · 9 pts · 12h

AI psychosis will turn you into a raving incoherent schizo. That is what is happening to the kids.

eremophila@lemmy.zip · 13 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Will anyone involved in this be driving, voting, or breeding in the real world?

Maaaaybe not breeding.

“Canon partner” is a great new term. Love it.

curiousaur@reddthat.com · 12 pts · 11h

This isn't that far off from existing incel / misogyny behavior, just sort of ai enhanced now, giving the creep a further sense of familiarity and rights to this poor girl.

I feel endangered and disgusted(?) that I don't know half the words in that post.

nah the planet has to have grass bc that person is definitely smoking too much of it

rnduser314@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 1d

I, personally, feel relieved.

Stolas@lemmy.ca · 10 pts · 1d

It's way too surreal how many people are actually conversing with ai, getting attached and using it as some sort of socializing outlet.

daggermoon@piefed.world · 9 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Is this a troll? Surely, nobody is that delusional.

AlcoholicPenis@futurology.today · 1 pts · 12h

You underestimate the dangers of AI psychosis

Aeder@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 5h

It looks like a really good trolling shitpost, or like the schizo ramblings of the kind of people who actually ship themselves with celebrities or send threats to authors once their "head-canons" get demolished.

HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 13h

i don't know what yumeship is [edit. looked it up it's a kind of fictosexuality. like, crush on a fictional being] (ship makes sense), but these messages are awful. if you have a public facing contact (and you should) in the performing arts world, you will get them though. good luck!

Perhaps Thanos was right

rumba@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 16h (1 reply)

Morally no, logically maybe, but his selection criteria was shit.

Buddahriffic@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 8h

If Thanos had announced his plan to use the stones to snap away everyone like this, Infinity War would have been all about how the Avengers help Thanos track down the stones and then fight Wanda who refuses to allow Vision to sacrifice himself for the cause. Endgame would have been a giant party followed by yet another confrontation with Wanda in WandaVision mode, until Thanos realizes she's doing the same shit only with magic instead of AI and snaps her away too.
