I think we should learn the lesson that covid taught us is possible. Shut everything down, shelter in place, guarantee food and housing (as you say), medical care, and education, but everything that is not absolutely essential can go to hell.
Like covid, the difficulty is getting enough other countries to go with the same plan to make it work. I don't think austerity for Canada would fix the world if the neighbours aren't doing it too.
You are only allowed to fix things if you don't tell people you are fixing them and most critically don't tell them what it will cost. The problem occurs when someone aware and nefarious seeks power they can point out all the 'expensive and worthless' things that were done by their opponents. We now all live in 'the problem occurs' time period.
But have you considered how much easier it would be to speed if 90% of the other drivers were in a train instead? There could be so many fewer potholes if oversized vehicles were restricted. The roads could be for local commercial vehicles and enthusiasts - all speed all the time.
I had heard that other provinces university's apply a 2 to 3% bump in GPAs to applicants from Alberta. The Alberta reason: They respect the advanced program as being more difficult. The other provinces reason: charity for the poor students raised there with a heavily exam-based GPA.
How it feels to me is that the goal is for the world to become so intrusive/demanding/stressful that the only way to exist in it sanely would be to build an interactive buffer between the person and the greater world, and they want to sell these brown nosing AI agents as that buffer.
I detest the ethics, economic, and environmental costs of these platforms, but the part of me that is casting around wildly for some sort of life preserver wonders if somehow these horrible contraptions of inevitable doom might just provide some short term relief.
I'd be more pissed if I had retirement savings. But joking aside, that was a truly heinous move to pull in those FOMO investment managers, which has surely boned over many people without their knowledge. I do know people who have retirement savings or pensions, and it might make me feel sad when I see them wandering the streets and digging through trash for food in their old age.
If they are starved slowly and piecemeal then there may never be enough desperate people to act together effectively. If they are being starved quickly, then I'd wonder who is trying to aim them and where?
Amazon already won their version of that contest. I can't imagine how the people running it think, but maybe they wouldn't want to play that game again when they can just wait and buy up all the losers at a small fraction of the current value.
I think that if you think you are better than other people you are then obligated to provide care and support for those you view as lessers. Then the very greatest that a person could be, and achieve, would be to care for and nurture the most people.
For me, the part of my views on the 'AI boom' that makes me seem irrational is the ethically dubious development of certain strains,coupled with that I absolutely lack the mental capacity to sort through all the noise and determine what parts are ok and what parts or not. Due to the marketing push, everything AI has melded into one giant glob of stuff that I am required, by the weakness of my flesh, to take or leave as whole.
A more nuanced approach is better if the resources are available to pursue it. I do not think it is fair to expect such an approach from any given individual.
I think having people present is a crutch for bad managers too. Instead of checking in, setting goals, and reviewing goals reached they can just roll around the compound and see if everyone is fiddling with their doodads and looking stressed out.
I predict she will add the 'vote for referendum to stay in canada' to the 'vote for referendum to leave canada' number and say 'we must have a referendum, I guess. Aw shucks', just as she did to excuse this stupid referendum. And as long as albertans are arguing over this b.s., we aren't focused on some other rotten thing the administration is doing. If someone sells you a knife that routinely fires bullets, then the company may have some complicity as with any misrepresented product.
In my opinion that is not a problem specific to only millenials.
