Using the typical example of a stretched elastic sheet, the demonstration is to show how mass pulls space in upon itself. Except this would be the inverse with the mass collecting on the border of the void, causing it to be stretched apart instead.

Another factor is that politicians aren't in the positions they have attained through entirely altruistic means. From my observations, when people achieve some larger amount of means, they trend towards being conservative to varying degrees of their accumulated wealth and status.
A measurable amount of the older generation don't want to give up anything, perhaps even being aware they have much more then they actually need. Or perhaps not, I don't know. A more socialist government means giving up portions of their wealth for things that have no benefit to them (eg schools for children) and or they assume it is all just a ruse to cheat them? Again, I don't know.
