I grew up boating up and down the New England coast. As long as there are big boats in the water there will be a need for good mechanics, and plenty of boat owners willing to throw money at you.
I remember stopping at a marina for fuel once and we saw a mechanic replacing an outboard engine on one of those big “cigarette” boats that often have 3 or 4 engines on them. We struck up a conversation and learned that the boat owner was a rich idiot who didn’t know how to operate the boat properly and would blow an engine almost every time he took the boat out. It happened so often that the mechanic had started keeping a spare $20,000 engine in stock just for this boat. He was more than happy to take money from the idiot boat owner to keep the guy happy.
I’ve been driving for a few decades now and I’ve seen plenty of edge cases during that time where driverless cars likely wouldn’t do very well. A few recent examples:
A car on fire in the middle of an intersection. Cars drove around it on the red light to make way for approaching fire trucks.
I stopped at a red light at a construction zone and was watching for the light to turn green, and didn’t see a police officer standing next to the construction crew trying to wave me through. I finally noticed him when he yelled at me.
There’s a traffic light near me where two roads intersect at about a 30 degree angle. You regularly see both the red & green signals for both roads when stopped. I’ve seen Teslas that misread red signals as green be cause of this.
Community theater can be a great choice if you have them in your area. $25 for a bunch of volunteers beats out the outrageous prices charged by megacorps like Ticketmaster any day of the week. I’ve seen many quality community theater productions, and have even seen some actors who have gone on to have professional TV and movie careers.
Musk reportedly travels with a security detail of 20+ people, which includes bodyguards, medics, advance scouts, etc. Going from that level of babysitting to alone in a jail cell is something I’d love to see.
Go drive/walk by your local police station and note all the plates of unmarked cars in the area. Many of them are likely police vehicles or private vehicles of employees. Do the same near a courthouse. Use those as fodder for this tool.
Granted it’s been 30-something years since I graduated with my CS degree, but my experience might be helpful. My first job out of college ended up being in tech support for a software company, and I used that to eventually move into software development. During my 2 years in tech support I learned what I could about the source code for the companies product, and built relationships with members of the engineering team. It got to the point where I could carry on conversations with some of the software developers to identify potential causes of bugs that customers were running into.
Because of the relationships I made with the software engineers they eventually recognized my skills and one of the managers eventually helped me transition from tech support into a software developer position.
I don’t know if this incident involved Flock or a competing product, but John Oliver recently described an incident on his show that demonstrates one of the major issues with this technology.
Apparently an ALPR reported a “hit” on the license plate of an SUV in a shopping center parking lot. The vehicle was reported stolen. So a half dozen or so police performed a felony arrest of the woman in the car along with a number of family members, including small children.
The problem was that while the letters & numbers on the license plate matched, the actual stolen vehicle was a motorcycle from a completely different state. So if any of those half-dozen cops had bothered to confirm even one additional detail about the stolen vehicle then this wouldn’t have happened.
How will Flock improve their technology so that police actually do more than the bare minimum when being told of an ALPR “hit”?

Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”. One star for not obeying the Bible.
Boston already has a very robust parking enforcement division that aggressively tickets things like expired meters, parking in resident-only areas without a current resident sticker, etc. They also regularly ticket & tow cars when street sweeping is scheduled. It would be trivial for them to add this to their enforcement activities.
My dad did this so often that he got to know some of the researchers really well. I think I was in third grade when one of them actually visited my school when he returned from a year in Antarctica. It was all thanks to my dad & his radio.
