I understand the appeal of the "real" JRPG stuff, but it was never for me in gaming.
One of the greatest things about building a Tyranids army (or at least when I played during 3rd/4th/5th edition) is that you can more or less do whatever color scheme you enjoy the most.
There are more than a handful ideas out there based on the different Tyranid Fleets in the lore though.

From what I've read, occasional is fine. VFTs can only handle so many closings on a leaf, but I'm really only familiar with sundew Spatulata, which don't do much.
I think the most important things are right water, enough light, and good potting.
