There are ~3 million cashiers in the USA, with a median pay of $14.99/hr / $31,190/year. They would need to average $100k/year for the $300 billion number to be accurate. There still need to be people staffing these machines, seems like 1:6 ratio is about the sweet spot. Taking into account that the machines themselves cost something too, the places using them are not making $300 billion back directly, it's just a ludicrous number that only undermines the good that the bill might be doing. Assuming this person published their research report, I'd love to see it!
Output to the reader? It's quick, same as the stock USB cable - it's pretty low amperage. Solar? Idk, still charging it for the first time š given the reader lasts at least a week (weeks?) on a charge, it can be slow and not matter.
OTS LiPo battery, charger, buck/boost converter, reed switch, and magnetic pogo connect.
Battery is wrapped in silicone tape to allow minor expansion, reed switch is plastic so curing resin wouldn't damage a glass case. Got pretty much the thinnest battery I could source OTS, a real production run could easily order a thinner cell if desired. Magnetic pogo pins are pretty standard 2.54mm pitch.
Charges from solar only. Turns on (EN pin on boost converter) when reed switch is triggered by the ereader, so idle current draw should be almost nothing.
Magnets are whatever I had on hand, placed as best I could without killing my battery or trigging the reed switch.
Ultimately could easily be a real product if someone had the desire and money. Obviously not planning to read in the sun, the idea is you put it out to charge then slap it on to top up the reader.
Next time I'd like to 3D print (or better yet, CNC mill) a protective bumper that doubles as a mold, so everything can get laid out, adhered down, then pour directly into the casing. Definitely want a better way to position the pogo connector beforehand - took a lot of sanding to get the back flat enough to seat, very marginal tolerances.
Really tough sell when there are cheap used EVs on the market. Bought my 2013 Nissan Leaf for <$5k, ~60 miles range (given degradation), capable of >80mph. There are only going to be better options out there as time goes on and more used EVs hit the market.

Have a 2011 Lexus ES350 (gas, V6), and a 2013 Nissan Leaf (EV, ~60 miles of range). Both my wife and I prefer driving the Leaf around town because it's just plain fun. We keep the Lexus for long trips, but could honestly get by with a rental if we ever needed to.
2013 Nissan Leaf tries to, but it's online system died in the mid teens when they pulled the plug, and 2G is mostly phased out anyway. You can hack it to use a custom self hosted replacement server and an IoT SIM card tho!
Standard in PNG for a long time has been 12ga shotguns shells with 3/4" galvanized steel pipe and a nail. Pretty much anything that isn't a .22LR is as good as "high power" in that context.
So obviously this is an amazing photo, I love it, and I love the fact a human used a camera to take this... but what's to stop someone just throwing a gradient on top of a stock photo of the moon and calling it a day?
