This is dumb. Shell isn't just sitting on their stuff. They're selling it - selling it to people who buy and use it. This is like saying OJ wasn't responsible for what happened, it was the knife manufacturer (but not the distributor or the retailer the ad firm etc)

Some people try to fill this hole by convincing themselves that service to others, or great accomplishments in their eyes, will somehow tip some cosmic scale and demonstrate/reward their goodness.

I got sick of the experience that every time I wanted to print, my ink had dried out. So I went on eBay and found an office style Ricoh color laser, scanner, fax combo one. I think I spent about 250 on it.
When the first toner (the first ones are not fully filled) ran out, I bought powder and chips on Amazon. I refilled the cartridges and used the new chips and boom.
Cost for that was like 30 bucks. Official cartridges were hundreds.
It isn't the disc that's important, it's the ownership - the ability to make use of your investment without depending on the manufacturer after the sale.

I've run jellyfin, it was kind of cool I guess, but there was nothing compelling about it. So I uninstalled it. What is jellyfin's "must have" feature, anyway?
I wouldn't go out and build a new car when I'm perfectly happy with my 10-year old sedan. If you're expecting me to go through that just because the new ones cost more than I spent years ago, you're insane. I wouldn't go and re paint my house just because the old company now charges new customers more for their paint.
I paid for it, it works well. There's no reason (except all the FUD I keep seeing on lemmy,) to even think about dismantling and recreating it with something new.
Keep building your dream tool Jellyfin people - Godspeed, but your community should target acquiring net-new users instead of trying to scare and poach happy users away from what they already have.

That's an interesting idea though inflation often doesn't match affordability of consumer goods. Saw a different thread recently where that was discussed - inflation gets measured on commodities, not the end products people actually buy. Explaining why some products can easily cost 150-200% more when inflation itself goes up just a little.

I thought wow ok now they have live sports events? Let me try this out.
I started it from the beginning and after the dry and tedious opening with the hosts, decided I want to fast forward past this and get to some action.
That's when I noticed the yellow markers on the playback timeline. On a whim, I FFd just past it - sure enough, 3 minutes of unskippable ads.
I backed out immediately and haven't watched anything on there since.
I remember when their whole model was that I paid monthly so I didn't have to watch ads. Prime did this, they all do it now.

Plex still costs the same to me. Lifetime pass means no price hike, and it "just works."
