Yes, for about 15 years. I was a Linux/Unix admin at several places, and I ran Linux on my computer (laptop and desktop) as it's such a horrible experience to remote admin Linux hosts from Windows. At the last place, because they had mandated everyone to use Skype for Business for online meetings, and switched off OWA, I actually had an old windoze laptop just for meetings and email. I had tried running 'doze in a VM, but it didn't work well enough for video calls, because of problems with efficiently forwarding USB ports to the VM for camera and mic, and video performance.
My last job was back to windoze support, and in that respect was NOT fun.
Yes, that's what we'd call "Brise Soleil" here. I did consider something like that, or shutters, but it would have cost more, and there are complications, such as I don't have a long enough ladder to do the upstairs windows, and the windows are very close to the eaves of the roof. It would work for the kitchen windows, but not the biggest culprit, the french patio windows, again because the roof is too close to the window lintel. I also needed something I could put together quickly - this was just a couple of hours of figuring out, measuring and cutting and sticking.
We're primarily looking at passive solutions that don't consume electricity, because energy prices in the UK are sky-high and going up. We're on a very low income, so passives are a long-term investment with a one-time cost are a very attractive option, and should hopefully last several years.

Looking at the pic again, I guess you might have been asking about the piece above the door - that wood came from the material of the sides of the shop counter. The door height is about equal to the length of the original counter.
No, because the bits of the shed around the door need structure (a frame essentially). I made the door and then the shed based around the dimensions of the door, and the length of the bikes. The planks of the door are wide, continuous lengths, top to bottom, but the walls of the shed are narrower, and shorter, roughly 1/3 + 2/3 height pieces, made into panels by screwing them together with laths behind.
