Tinha escrito um comentário, mas pesquisei um detalhe e achei muitos equívocos no que falava então uma crítica decente do livro, que é uma coletânea de textos antigos e novos. Tem um trecho de Isabel no fim, a história que conhecia e que achei não ter sido bem retratada aqui.
Apontamentos para uma história de horror. Ou um novelão. Uma mulher — trinta e quatro, trinta e cinco anos, solteira, tímida, poucos amigos, morando sozinha — está um dia olhando os novos lançamentos numa livraria, pois seu maior prazer é a leitura, quando sente uma mão no seu braço e ouve uma voz de homem que diz:
— Vamos?
Ela vira-se, já pronta para repelir o homem rispidamente, como faz com todos que ousam importuná-la, quando nota que o homem é cego. Fica sem saber o que dizer. O homem estranha o silêncio, aperta o seu braço e diz:
— Isabel?
E ela, sem saber por que, mas com a intuição de que a sua vida a partir daquele instante será outra, o coração batendo, diz:
— Sim...
— Vamos?
E ela, o coração batendo:
— Vamos.
O homem é mais moço do que ela. Bonito. Bem vestido. Bem cuidado. Deixa-se guiar por ela, fazendo perguntas sem muito interesse. Por que estão pegando um táxi e não o carro? Ela diz que perdeu a chave do carro na rua. Ele sorri e diz “Você...”. Quando chegam no apartamento dela ele pergunta onde estão. Ela diz “Em casa...”, e ele diz “Estranho...”. Mas não diz mais nada.
Just to clarify. You go slower or you stay away. Your don't have to do both. The ideia is to be far enough that the bike toppling to the side doesn't result in a cyclist under your car, or that hitting the cyclist is at a relative low speed.
And I honestly see more drivers overreacting to things that would just dent or scratch their cars than cyclists losing control when they have their lives endangered.
If I'm correct, roads were for everyone, then they decided to make it only for cars and the rest has to fight to have small strips dedicated for them because they supposedly get in the way.
And about the cyclists. They might be assholes, or you might be passing too close or too fast.
I haven't thought about the subject too deeply, so I'll just interject a consideration. Are you thinking about the situation from a purely individualistic point of view, in which families live completely apart? Intergenerational units are more common in some cultures than others, with everyone contributing to the same household. It would be the same reasoning of spouses getting an inheritance, but you might be against that as well.
You can use the math below and correct the years to be close to 5. But we would end up with a mummy because of the conditions (wind leading to dessication).
Try thinking like this: Having more power means that your decisions, preferences, biases and limitations have more weight. With more weight, you will bulldoze whatever other people want. With all the weight, whatever you say goes. The corruption is a part of the system overruling the rest through no malicious intent.
I was annoyed too when I saw the message, but, if I understood it correctly, it's a matter of widening the scope of the LTS version. The extra packages would only be updated on the next release, or are already updated if you don't use LTS. The message make it seem like they are withholding security patches, but it has always been like that and nobody cared. We just want everything to be updated, even if it'll make no difference.
I half remember something like that happening in Brazil. The right proposes something the left approves, there's no fight, they realize their mistake and start opposing their own idea.
I have to admit that this was the discussion that made me realize we can easily believe a problem exists just because it theoretically might exist. The discussion started without any data backing the claims. People said there was an advantage and that it was unfair, but they were just words that connected to internal belief systems that were either faulty or bigoted.
It's similar to the discussion of sportswear. The solution is offering athletes choice and autonomy, but it's easy to end up in discussions criticizing the clothes without consulting the people that are affected and the reality of their situation.
You eat the base of the pizza there? That's crazy. It's like eating a paper plate. You are supposed to eat only the topping. Next you're gonna say you eat the bread that wraps your sandwiches.
It's not always that simple. For beach volley, I saw athletes commenting that shorts are worse because of the sand getting in the way. Men would chose something better in a different culture. There's sexism I believe, but it's not always what we would expect.
