Maybe I should start learning Japanese, honestly. I interact with a lot of Japanese media lately and being dependent on localizations (which are rarely 'great') isn't good enough for me.

Roguelikes are generally very good with the trope. In Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, when you exhaust a manual's bonus to experience, you get a message "You finish reading your manual and throw it away". But if the manual you were finished with was dedicated to the skill of throwing weapons, you get this special message instead: "you finish reading your manual and masterfully toss it away."

I'm surprised you picked it up 5 times before deciding it's not for you. I also occasionally fall into this trap of "this game is really popular so my lack of enjoyment of it must be because of my approach" and then I sink 6 hours into Earthbound despite not enjoying anything the game.

There's too much stuff to explore in this world to spend so much time with something as pointless as an unfun game.

To be fair, coop with a friend can fix any game! But playing FromSoftware games in coop sounds funny, given how much focus is on loneliness in their games.

::: spoiler Outer Wilds base game spoilers You know the gravity cannon on Ember Twin? When I was watching someone's playthrough, a weird question came to my mind: why here? Why is the cannon was put on Ember Twin, of all planets.

Amusingly, there IS a reason! The planet is filling with sand and, a few minutes before supernova, the cannon becomes completely inaccessible. Incidentally, a few minutes before supernova, the Interloper gets consumed by the expanding sun.

The placement of that cannon is anything but accidental. :::

Ah, I see. I love these kinds of games so I'm a bit ignorant to how others perceive them. If that's how you feel then of course the game's just not for you.

I want to play Myst one day. Everything I hear about this game says me I'm gonna love it.

Lunacid. It has such a weird and captivating world. Like, the first area is a cave that's filling with a liquid moonlight. Big snails enjoy the moisture while weird abominations roam the floods.

Music is simply awesome, I listen to it outside the game from time to time.

The game is very nonlinear. If you can't solve a puzzle in one place, you should go to another. Some puzzles require hints from elsewhere.

I had to look up a few solutions when I was done with exploration. That was a little bit unsatisfying but it didn't ruin the game for me.

Could it be you envy women's ability to express their feeling in a more open way without being ashamed by our patriarchal society?

Doom 2 is a great base for mods but yeah levels that come with it are ahhh a mixed bag.

But when we're talking about a disappointing sequel, it's hard not to mention Doom 3. Turning a fun and silly game into a slog with jumpscares is quite a decision!

Several questionable features like "reputation" (basically karma) were added in PieFed on a opt-out basis creating lots of drama. Rimu (the main developer of the project) reacted poorly to this. Then he also got into another drama related to one of .world admins and got attention of the tankies. He ended up creating a built-in banlist of people who offended him, to his instance - except that it doubles as the flagship PieFed instance so it was widely seen as a bad move.

The most recent drama was related to the 'vote limit' based on a observation that a small percent of people on threadiverse cast most votes on posts. He (somehow) thought it meant these people control what everyone sees so he ended up adding a limit on how many posts and comments each user can vote. It doesn't affect most users but some very active users were really upset over it.

There are posts on c/fediverse@lemmy.world on all these events if you want to know more about them.

Unfortunately I don't see Tess-like community grouping feature in Alexandrite, and it doesn't even have a setting for the default comment sorting method.

I don't really like Tess' UI design that much - I'm comfy with Lemmy's default. It's advanced features that I'm gonna miss. Alexandrite seems to be just as bare-boned as Lemmy's UI.

But I found info on Lemmy 1.0 that will be released eventually and has most features that I want so I probably just gotta wait a little until that day comes.

Dark Souls I (but no Dark Souls II, I'm not sure about the third) doesn't engage your completionism that much. Although you would need to avoid online guides and wikis as well as Steam/PS/Xbox. The letter will generally be the case for all mentioned games.

Yume Nikki is a... weird "game". More like experience honestly. The whole gameplay is taking a walk in dreamworlds and collect "effects". There's nothing beyond that really. Don't read up on "events" on the wiki though.

Outer Wilds is another game with a focus on exploring and solving a great mystery. No collectibles, no optional challenges, no permanently skipable content.

NO-SKIN is pretty straightforward too.
