Hi! Former aluminum process engineer here. Caution– not a metallurgical engineer.

Really simplified version: if you recycle car body parts and cans and radiators and building metal, you can't make car body parts again out of them without diluting impurities down with prime (new) aluminum. So to recycle it is amazing, better than most products (since it offsets a TON of energy, way more than the same workable unit of glass or steel or anything). But just recycling doesnt fix it, you need some prime. Most of the US prime comes by way of Ontario, China, or Australia. Since a lot of the aluminum production is on the East coast in general, Ontario sees the most of it.

Seems like a very effective way to impact the US in response to the ridiculous tariff/trade negotiation situation

I only had one job with scrum as a daily part of it and we had a 30 hour planning session once a quarter (over 4 days)

I can't even imagine a 10 hour retro.

Good meme.

Commonly misunderstood that Hitler was upset about the bombing of pearl harbor. Famously, Yamamoto and a few of Hitler's inner circle were not happy with the decision, but Hitler himself was somewhat aware of it from the 17th of November, and reacted positively.

Author Ian Kershaw records Hitler's initial reaction to the attack, when he was first informed about it on the evening of 7 December at Führer Headquarters: "We can't lose the war at all. We now have an ally which has never been conquered in 3,000 years"

Churchill reacted almost the same way, explaining that he doesn't know when or how the war will be won, but with the US in it that side will win.

My partner used to work for the FDA doing food safety stuff.

That's actually part of the problem. The recalls are happening not preemptively but after it's killing people. People dying from the e coli blueberries then initiating a recall. Nevermind how little prevention is happening before things go to market. Quality and production are always at odds with each other, but the threat of law was the only thing giving quality ammo. Now it's just pure unfettered capitalism

Fair enough! I definitely don't remember that it was societal collapse, I saw the movie when it came out and hadn't thought about it much since. I must've not given it the attention it deserves.

I also don't love hero stories for the most part? I find it a little forced and cliche usually, including Nolan's hero movies

on Play with the pet · c/cat · 31 pts · 4d

Every time I get up to pee in the middle of the night (decently often), my cat hears it, runs from sleep into the bathroom to wait while I pee, then sprints to a very specific rug to be pet as hard as possible on it. This occurs without fail, and it's the sweetest he ever is to anyone.

I fucking love middle of the night rug pets. Fuck sleep.
