Usually because I put my socks on in the bedroom, but my shoes are by the back door: i don't put them on unless I am going outside.

Shoes belong in the entryway. Socks in the bedroom. Socks will always be put on before shoes.

There are a couple of niche situations where one might put socks and shoes on at the same time/place, but the norm of socks first then travelling to the shoes dictates that socks first, shoes after.

The one exception is when for example, changing in a public space, or outside, where you don't want to get your sock dirty, so you put sock then shoe and then sock then shoe

I'm rarely in the position where I put my shoes on at the same time as my socks. Socks go on when I get dressed, shoes go on when I go out, unless maybe I'm camping in a small tent getting dressed rarely coincides with when I go out. I assume this is the case for most people.

If the floor is wet like at the pool, it's sock shoe sock shoe.

Any other time it's sock sock shoe shoe, because I am not tracking the outside world into my house or bedroom, and the shoes are at the front door.

Normal shoes I'll do sock/sock shoe/shoe. For lace up calf length boots I'll do sock/boot sock/boot because it's a whole process and if I don't adjust the sock just right it gets super bunched or overly tight on the toesies.

So, really, it depends on the context.

here is the thing. I think the meatheads argument is better but I still prefer to do it like archie.

A changing bench I designed and am currently finishing. Current shoes go on the surface next to the pad. Additional shoes for winter, dress shoes, etc. go below. Slide-out hamper in the middle.

I put on one sock and if I'm putting on my shoes at the same time, I then put on a shoe, because my leg is up on my knee so why switch back and forth? The shoe is right there next to me, so I put it on. Also, apparently I'm a "savage" for choosing to wear shoes in my own house. So be it. RAWR!

Want to weigh in with one more sock/shoe situation: when I'm in the changing room at the pool and the floor around me is wet from me dripping all over, there is no other place to put a socked foot down, so it goes straight into the shoe.

In most cases socks then shows. My shoes are by the door so it doesn't make sense to do anything else; shoes are gross and not wearing them inside is better.

Exception: I injured my back and doing sock+shoe was easier but, still, by the door

If I’m off, neither. I don’t actually care for footwear and if I have to venture out I have sandals and I don’t mind rawdogging the porch or lawn.

If I’m drunk it’s a free for all. Shoe/shoe, or Shoe/sock, or just sock, not necessarily where said sock is designed to go.
