I think of it as a simpler alternative to pumped hydro when all you need is heat. It kind of dumb to waste the great pumped hydro resources that can store electricity on heating stuff. So, this can cover their heating needs during bad weather, and they can used pumped hydro for the rest.

Honestly, I think we still know very little about this. This research is about strong statistical associations. A lot more research is needed to understand the exact biological processes.

I think pumped hydro is already maxed out in many locations, and a lot more complex/expensive if you only need to store heat (and not electricity).
And the best part is, it's not actually complex or expensive technology. Essentially it's a big box with crushed stone in it.
