Can also vouch for Ortlieb. Back when I bike commuted to the office, I used an Ortlieb single pannier for my laptop and accessories. Was pretty convenient to clip my bag to the bike and not get my back too sweaty from riding with a backpack.

Was going to post Infinite Jest as well. It's amazing how many things he predicted in it just by looking at where society was heading. He also actually attended AA meetings in Boston as part of his research for it.

Another mind blowing part for me, among many, was realizing that you have to read the book several times to catch every little joke, subplot, reference, etc. So it actually mirrors the titular movie in the book, which is so addictive you just watch it over and over.

There's a great interview DFW did on Book Worm where he says the structure of the book is modeled after a Sierpiński gasket. So for me, it's all the layers and world building that make it special.

Ha yeah, bought them a while back but even then I had to space out some of those purchases.

I've used my rasps, track saw and domino quite a bit so they've probably paid for themselves by now. And since they're usually of good quality it's "buy once, cry once".

Some examples I've encountered:

Power tools

  • Festool - Germany
  • Mafell - Germany

Hand tools

  • Auriou rasps - (handstitched!) France
  • Pfeil gouges - Switzerland
  • Ashley Iles chisels - UK
  • Gränsfors axes - Sweden
  • Sjöbergs workbenches - Sweden
  • BeaverCraft carving tools - Ukraine

Food and beverage

  • Le Creuset cookware - France
  • Opinel knives - France
  • La Marzocco espresso machines - Italy

Electronics

  • Fairphone smartphones - Netherlands
  • Pro-ject turntables - Czech republic
  • Rega turntables - UK

Musical Instruments

  • Bulas banjos and mandolins - Poland

Yeah it's not looking too good at the moment. Telo is another EV startup and they're shooting for a 350mi model at $46k which would be 7.6.

Hoping battery tech advances or continues to get cheaper at scale. Ford is supposedly working on an affordable EV platform but still too early to tell.

Otherwise, a used EV might be the way to go.
