My advice is to tell the truth to people you trust. Try and stay away from your ex because they sound like a dangerous person. Participate in queer community and show them who you are, if you are a kind and considerate person im sure the rumours will quickly be dispelled.
It's kind of a futile exercise because even if you could search communities on a defederated instance you wouldn't be able to subscribe to them because the servers are not sharing information. I can see why the devs would prioritize other work and leave it to 3rd party sites to display defederations.
I know the Lemmy devs are preparing to release v1.0.0 which has an improved API. You're right to highlight the issue. Hopefully this feature is implemented soon.
At the end of the day, Lemmy is free software and the devs are only paid through donations. I think it's to be expected that the software is not perfect but im still very grateful that it exists.

Quantum mechanics does not allow for a knowable world. What happens inside the event horizon of a black hole is surely unknowable?
I wouldn't say that. Kindness can be an idea. But it can also be a real physical action. While it would be idealistic to say that all of our problems would be solved if everyone was nicer to each other. It would be materialistic to incorporate kindness into your everyday actions.
