Agreed. I do think Bernie is genuine because he seems to have always been genuine. However, there are many US politicians calling for data center moratoriums and the like because it’s politically beneficial to them at the moment. One year moratoriums until they’re re-elected and can reopen the flood gates. My own Pennsylvania governor is a good example. I think Shapiro is mostly good for our state but until recently, he was all in on data center build out. I don’t want a moratorium. I want our governments to hold these corporations accountable for the environmental harm that they cause, make them pay their taxes, and regulate the heck out of them so that opening a new data center and running an AI company isn’t easy.
There are some steps you can take in Linux but there are also steps you can take regardless of OS. Gnome has built in parental controls. I’m not sure about the other DEs but Gnome has something. Browsers have had controls for a long time.
For those so inclined, you can set up network wide controls via a PiHole instance. If that’s too restrictive, you can pick and choose your kids’ devices to apply the restrictions. That’s what I do. It was super easy. I just update the block list regularly and test it.
As parents, we need to have some awareness of what our kids do online. I’m all in favor of making it easier for parents to do that and better educating parents on what is available.
The big guys might advertise their “new parental controls” but I doubt they will be advertising against Linux and open source. I’m sure Apple will have a version of this that is slightly more privacy respecting than Microsoft and maybe they’ll advertise that. They don’t care about Linux though. Not from a competitive standpoint, not yet.
I mean they can search you for a phone so saying you don’t have one doesn’t seem like a viable option. Having a burner that you freely offer up seems like a better option. I know that some journalists who travel to dangerous parts of the world will often do this (along with many other things) to try and protect themselves.
Do your cameras work? Partially? Completely? I have a ThinkPad X1 Tablet Gen 2 that has similar hardware to some Surface devices but I just can't get the cameras to work. I tried all of the libcamera stuff and no dice.
I am relatively new to film photography as an adult. For context, I have only shot about five rolls, all color. I developed my most recent roll at home. It turned okay but I need to get the hang of it. It felt like a lot to juggle with temps and timing.
Agreed. Make it about the privacy of students or something. Privacy is a winning topic across much of the political spectrum and would gain support from a lot of parents. In the end, make it about the benefits of free and open source software.
Just go back to establishing a computer lab with shared resources. We don’t need a laptop in every kid’s backpack. Fewer screens and more books is the answer.
AI use in schools will make us wish constant screens were all we had to worry about. We are actively making kids dumber and that’s just how big tech wants it.
Agreed but at the same time, every kid having one is a detriment at the moment. It only adds to the overstimulation kids face in so many other places. Books, paper, pen, and, pencil are the way to go. Save computes for learning about how to use computers and tech effectively.
I’ll add that I learned from another user on here who administers a fleet of Chromebooks and iPads for a school that those devices make management of the classroom much easier. They’re designed with it in mind. He tried exploring Linux and it just didn’t allow teachers to monitor for inappropriate activity the same way.
Its not about what can or cannot be done with the operating system but rather what functionality it has to support those with impairments to things like hearing or sight.
