Something I stumbled upon when doing some adoption related reading was a book called The Highly Sensitive Child (ISBN 978-0767913904). I was originally looking for something pretty tightly focused on sensitivities to sensations, noises, tastes and things like that.
But it ended up being a lot more well-rounded and incredibly educational about kids that often are noticed as being shy. They tend to be the ones that sit at the back of the classroom and observe for a while long before they feel comfortable stepping in and trying to make a friend. Or kids that might startle easy, get overwhelmed in a loud room, or tend to notice a lot of details that maybe others around them don't.
I have no idea how much applies to your kiddo. But I figured if that sounded familiar to you it might be a good read and I might give you some good advice. (I also recognize that you posted this 7 months ago and you might already have figured this out for all I know 😅)
I'm honestly so grateful for Star Trek. And there are enough episodes between TOS, TNG, VOY, DS9, and Lower Decks that I can pretty much infinitely rewatch them in an endless loop. Especially if you also throw in The Orville, The Expanse, any of the Stargates, or Battlestar Galactica into that watch loop.
I'm kind of excited with the direction they are taking here. Introducing our boy to a bunch of mages who have never swung a sword is different than having him teach experienced soldiers. Plus it calls back to his roots of teaching kids!

Hearing someone as thoughtful as you sharing the end of a father's life really helped to frame the life of my own Dad who has really surprised me with his recent attempts to mend his many mistakes.

You're probably right! Anybody who's watched it can tell the ratings dropped because it was a slow, relatively uninteresting episode. Not because of a few seconds of a non-straight relationship. 👏
The thing that gets me is that so many people are talking about a fucking KISS ON THE CHEEK.
But they aren't talking about the fact that this Klingon guy is so different from other Klingons that he didnt want to participate in a hunt and shoot a bird??!
There are many things to complain about, but this gay relationship isn't one of them 👏
Is anybody else a bit surprised by the pessimism surrounding seeing movies in theaters?
I'm not surprised to see people shit on AMC specifically, given some of the moves they've made with acquiring smaller theaters and hiking prices. But, I'm also seeing a lot of people hating on the very idea of seeing a movie outside the comfort of their home.
I guess I love movies more than most. Enough to go to the movies and see three movies back-to-back-to-back in an evening. I mean, over the course of 2025 I saw over two dozen movies and only two or three of them were a bad experience (loud/distracting audience members, poor seating or outdated audio / visual infrastructure). The vast majority of the time, my experience was much better than watching it on my 60" TV screen at home. I can honestly say that my most tranquil and relaxed moments of last year were when I was free from all distractions and enjoying a cinematic moment with a crowd of other people.
I guess it's just sad to see streaming services get rewarded for pumping out a ton of slop. While creative and unique movies only sell a few tickets on opening weekend. The people that fund movies definitely have to be noticing those trends, which I'm sure is why we're seeing fewer and fewer interesting movies each year. We ultimately end up with endless sequels, live-action-remakes of successful animated movies/video games, and endless waves of things we've already seen before.
What a shitty time to live in: We live our lives with less money than our Grandparents. We see a constant stream of sad, frustrating, or disheartening news 24/7. Then, we try to take a second to relax and step away from the madness. But, many of our beloved hobbies are in a nosedive so it's hard to truly get away from it all:
Video games are crashing with crazy numbers of studios shutting down or laying people off. We have to lean on Indie games, and a few hit games to keep the medium bearable. Not to mention AI is making gaming far too expensive.
Great movies are getting way less attention, and instead we're getting Five Nights at Freddy's 2 because it'll sell tickets to the kids.
And it gets continuously harder to watch good TV without being subscribed to a dozen different subscription services. No wonder people are sailing the seas like it's the 1700s.
Long story short: Anybody else frustrated right now?
I honestly wouldn't have watched Star Trek TNG if I hadn't randomly scrolled through the channels and seen a boy my age on a spaceship.
So regardless of how well written or acted the character is, I'm always really grateful! (But I recognize that's probably a pretty niche situation compared to what other Trekkies feel)

Yeah, I believe they were renewed for two seasons, so they could've kept going. But the creators wanted to be done, I guess 😢
