Hey all,
What games have you guys been playing with your friends?
Doesn't necessarily need to be a steam game.
I am looking for something that fits our group...we usually end up playing Counter strike, but really enjoyed pico park and move or die, as well as pummel party. Pubg was a fun game to mess around on but we only play on Linux now.
However I have trouble finding other games for us. The problem is one of my friends is kind of picky and can be lazy about learning complex game mechanics, they just want to have fun and dont like learning hard stuff.
The other friend games all day every day, so they are a pro at everything. If we play a game that has any element of "grind", this friend will play it for 20 hours in 3 days and be completely ahead if us in all aspects, plus they watch every video of every game so they know how to play through the whole thing, ruining any surprises or secrets.
That's why games like cs or pico park work well, because its individual effort plus group effort. Any game where its group effort, other friend just takes over the whole game. I love games like quake that are fast but they make other friend sick (and I'm too good at them to be fun for all of us)
It seems so many games I see that look super cool just end up being grind games that aren't fun. Like that fog train game looked great but then it looks like a big time suck.

I haven't played myself because I don't have friends to play with but maybe something like PEAK or Abiotic Factor?
bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works · 8 pts · 163d
ah yes we had played PEAK briefly, it's amazing!
feel free to message me if you'd like to play something. maybe we'll have similar taste who knows
caut_R@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 163d
PEAK is literally peak. Such a gem.
FatVegan@leminal.space · 1 pts · 162d
Love in a dangerous space time is fun with friends. I feel like i have the same friends as you. Very picky, hard to please and at the end they would always rather play tarkov or arc raiders. Deep rock galactic is also an absolute gem of a game.

Peak would be perfect for OP's group. It's cooperative, so having players of wildly different skill levels just means the better players can support the newer ones.
Abiotic Factor is an excellent game, but unfortunately it'd fail both of OP's player requirements (too complex, and easily spoiled/speedrun by someone looking things up ahead of time).

I'm in the same kinda friend group, and we are always trying to find that next coop game. I usually check gg.deals daily with a the coop feature selected.
We just played free Demo of Toxic Command it was fun for a weekend night. We have played all the Killing Floor games, and I personally think this one could be just as good.
Here are some other games we always go back to, in no particular order.
Have fun!

Gonna second Risk of Rain 2 and Mycopunk. Both of them are really fun if you like roguelike/bullet hells and looter shooters, respectively.
I'll also throw in Super Battle Golf. A friend and I just picked it up and it's so much fun and hilarious, up to 8 can play at a time.

Heads up, your account has the bot flag enabled. So your comments show up as being made by a bot.

Thanks, I had no idea that was enabled.

Our small group has had a lot of fun with REPO and Lethal Company. Both are very similar gameplay wise but REPO feels more polished imo.
There are no complex systems to learn and little or no progression at all so it’s easy to pick up and play.
kurcatovium@piefed.social · 6 pts · 163d
It's a bit stretch, but you can try Golf with your friends. It's fun, mostly casual, but can be also pretty intense.
bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 163d
Oh yep we sometimes play that! One friend hates it lol
Big_Boss_77@fedinsfw.app · 3 pts · 162d
Because the physics on that game are a fucking suggestions... the same shot twice will lead to one dead sticking to the wall and the next will send it space shuttle status 19,000 years into the future... it's ridiculous.
Still fun though...

Streets of Rogue
🥲 i forgot that this game is kinda expensive
ampersandrew@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 163d
I can highly recommend this game, and my IsThereAnyDeal extension says it's currently $3.58 at GameBillet, though I'd say it's worth every penny of the $20 they're asking.
UnGlasierteGurke@feddit.org · 3 pts · 163d
still waiting for SoR 2
Quetzalcutlass@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 163d
It's a shame they pulled the demo.
bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 163d
oh yes! this is kind of like wazhack!

Guild Wars 2 has a dynamic level scaling system that does a pretty good job of solving disparities like the one you described. I think it also has simpler battle mechanics than other MMOs. And the base game is free.

Dont starve together
FatVegan@leminal.space · 4 pts · 162d
I love don't starve. Everything about it is cute and fun. But... Holy shit am i bad at the game. There is something about it that i just don't understand. I even watched a bunch of videos, and it always looks very easy when they do it, when i play, every spider is a raid boss, then i lose health, go insane, can't find food, rabbits turn black and i die. It's probably the only game i ever played that i'll just never understand.
orochi02@feddit.org · 1 pts · 162d
Honestly Same lol
ICastFist@programming.dev · 3 pts · 162d
Palworld might fit your group, though my recommendation is to play via direct connection to one of you that isn't the mr grind - any local save can enable multiplayer and people just need the invitation code to join in. The save remains local on the host's machine.
An old game that might be fun for you is either Jedi Outcast or Jedi Academy, the best Star Wars games with lightsaber dueling and force using, also guns (they use the Quake 3 engine but aren't as fast paced) - the former has 3 saber dueling styles, the latter adds dual saber wielding and the 2-bladed saber (the one Darth Maul uses)
A NeoGeo emulator + Neo Bomberman could be fun, too. Or the classic SNES bomberman games, too.

Yapyap, Webfishing, Space Station 13/14 (always), and Species Unknown

How many people are in your group? If its 4 people or less then you guys have tons of options, but if its 5 or more, your options are extremely limited (I know this because I play in a group of 5).
Something like Helldivers 2 seems like it could be a good fit, but it only supports up to 4 players.
bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 163d
usually 3 or 4.
RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 163d
In that case, you got a lot of options.
Helldivers 2 would probably be a good fit. It doesn't have a lot to learn for a player to do well, and if one player is a min-maxing nuisance it won't really effect the rest of the player's experience. It's a cooperative third person shooter. Its hard for one player to take over everything, especially at the higher difficulties.
CatWinner@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 162d
I didn’t see Brotato mentioned yet! It’s a great cooperative game and you can play in under your name so your one friend can’t unlock/do everything. But even if they do, that’s just more player options and items to use together! It’s easy to learn but does have some depth to its mechanics. Fun and straightforward roguelite.

Deadlock for the intense sometimes competitive gameplay. For the chill side, Tower Unite. And for the laughs: Super Battle Golf!

We have been playing Fall Guys and Party Animals a bit, but we're kinda mixed between console and PC right now, so we're limited. We were also playing Kart Rider: Drift, but I think it got taken off Steam and is now on another Storefront? Idk. It's a fun little Mario Kart clone. Chained Together is a blast for a little while, if not just to rag on whoever sucks the most. Left 4 Dead but modded always looks fun, Golf with your Friends is a favorite of mine. Ultimate Chicken Horse looks like it'd be a good time as well (or any of those short form course building games). RV There Yet is a PEAK style game (or whatever you'd call it) that I'd say looks a little more varied in activities that looks like a blast as well.

Dota 2
My app freaked out and posted this 6 times sorry op
bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 163d
i was wondering what that was!
thanks - but we aren't into that sort of game
PlzGivHugs@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 163d
Dota 2 is great (I've got thousands of hours, and am still on the low side in my circles) but its hardly something I'd recommend for those who don't want to spend time learning. Its like 50 hours to learn the basics, then another hundred to understand basic positioning and strategy.
