Yasss! You goโ€ฆ You deserve better, get it.

Remember, we accept the love we think we deserve.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y (2 replies)

That's not how you treat someone you're invested in (his behaviour). He comes off as a user type. Getting you to do all the legwork, all the listening, getting you to buy him things...

It's a shame about the tickets as he doesn't deserve them. But you can always just dump him now?

Edit: I'm sorry to speak so plainly. But seriously, fill the gap he occupied with something that feeds you or advances your life, he's 'there' but is really just taking from you.

It's pulling down your self esteem and the amount of time spent traveling to him and thinking about him means you won't be able to accomplish something else. Like building a real support network, studying for a qualification, meeting a genuinely good guy, or working towards a career change. In your 20s that time is so valuable.

The guy is an idiot.

He doesn't seem to know how precious it is to have a loved one speak, to have a loved one share. That sharing is what makes intimacy, is what informs.

People who love you want to know.

I could listen to my loved ones all day. ๐Ÿ˜ป

That said, I come from a background where no one was interested in me so I don't know how to do it, I had to teach myself ( so I am very imperfect)

So maybe he doesn't know how.

imoldgreeeg@aussie.zone · 11 pts · 2y (3 replies)

There must be a german word for the slight feeling of disappointment when your test results come back negative, and it's not that you want something bad wrong with you but you do wish someone could tell you why you are so tired and run down lately...... (other than just being tired and run down ..)

mysticgreg@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Can completely relate. I had a full set of bloods etc. done late last year for pretty much this exact reason, and according to the tests everything's just dandy. Feeling like utter garbage seems to just be part of getting old.

imoldgreeeg@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y

Yeah I am not a fan of this old person malarkey

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

Che disastro, my street is blocked off for the next month for tram works, and the council promised I would still have access to my driveway. The construction company has decided no we won't have access. So now the council is pissed, and I have one car stuck in the carport and one car that can't get back in, and I don't have permits to street park. All a complete cluster fuck, but at least the council are actually being really proactive about finding a solution for me.

danwritesbooks@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 2y (5 replies)

How was everyone's weekend?

Since moving out on my own, I've put on weight. I don't know how. I'm eating healthy, my dinners are usually a combo of chicken, veggies, and rice (sometimes no rice), I don't eat much during the day and don't snack as much. No soft drink, mostly water, very little chocolate or sugary snacks. It's frustrating so I decided to do some more active work. I went for a run on Sat and Sun morning and feeling it today.

Old age is a killer.

I also bought some boxing gloves and a punching bag to do as well and plan on getting a bike to do rides with little one.

I got three concept ideas for my next book cover and all three are amazing. I'm stuck between 2 to choose from. Good problem to have.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y (2 replies)

If you are under a lot of stress that can have an impact on weight gain.

danwritesbooks@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

I reckon this is the most stress-free I've been in the last 5 years haha.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

Well that's actually good because stress is probably the hardest to control.

Once you find out why the weight gain you'll be able to correct it. You've got this!

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Brown rice? supposedly whites not great for you.

Weekend was nice, but hot AF here yesterday.

danwritesbooks@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 2y

Brown or black rice.

And somewhere between 1/3 to 1/2 a cup.

danwritesbooks@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 2y (5 replies)

Took little one to the circus on the weekend. It was really awesome but this moment scared the living christ out of me.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (2 replies)

nah, that's not a danger moment, that's showmanship.

It's a show and part of the thrill for the audience is the perception of danger, so the performer makes it look scary. Another thing is the audience has to think it's difficult. Now these performers do this all day until it's second nature, but then the audience doesn't see the skill and practice in it. Hence they have to make it look difficult or the audience won't appreciate it.

danwritesbooks@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y

I'm not entirely sure the skipping rope misstepped was showmanship there. I think he messed up. Music went off and stopped the whole thing.

Maybe you are right, but I didn't get that impression based on the show as a whole.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

Yep I agree. All part of the show.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

I imagine it shook the performer a bit too

danwritesbooks@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y

Yeah. But he gave it another go and did it, and then went around blindfolded.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 2y (5 replies)

I've definitely caught something today, been feeling dizzy, sluggish and nauseous with an awful sinus type headache and a bitter taste in my mouth all day. Made myself eat but I think I'm gonna have a very early night tonight.

Finished reading The Ocean at the End of the World so I can finally return it to the library.

Now I'm gonna reread one of my favourites, Jasper Fforde's Shades of Grey - or as much of it as I can before I fall asleep or throw up from this nausea - before the long awaited sequel Red Side Story drops tomorrow. 14 years!!!! @lemondrop@aussie.zone I dunno if you come here much but I'll be keen to know your thoughts when you read it.

Camping was amazing. The Mt Oberon hike was... intense but super fulfilling. Might need to upgrade the swag's mattress though. Also gotta shout out to my new car, AC that actually works is a freaking treat!

As a frequent swag user, 11/10 recommend investing in a stretcher to pop under it, changed the swag game for me.

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (4 replies)

I might have to. Gonna try a cheaper solution first. I've camped in WAY colder conditions than that before so I'm not totally sure why it was so cold, but the ground was hard as a rock and you deffo felt that.

bananafungus@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (3 replies)

What swag do you have? So many come with shitty inch thick mats. One of my camping buddies got a bit of foam and cut it to size, swags bulky as shit now, but he seems to sleep like a rock in it.

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (2 replies)

23Zero Dual 1100. I've been really really happy with it so far, this is the first time I've had a complaint to be honest. But I've never used it on dirt-so-hard-its-concrete either. its supposed to have a pretty good mattress in it, but my mate in a cheaper swag also had a bad time. he was talking about going to Clarke rubber and basically getting a yoga mat type material to go under the existing matress.

bananafungus@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (1 reply)

I've only seen that brand looking at awnings, looks like pretty nice swag though. Clark rubber thing was basically what my mate did, only he cut it down to size himself.

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 2y

yeah thats what Im thinking. Or a cheap yoga mat from kmart or something.

I saw a $10 Kmart paint set that includes a few cheap brushes and tubes of medium... but my attempts at blocking in on the drawing app didn't look good. I also don't know how to mix/choose colours yet, and the chance of my sheets and my cat participating in the creative process are non zero. There may also be a sip of paint water on the cards.

Must... not... collect... more hobby clutter

I haven't even done another test run with the charcoal because I'm physically wrecked and spend all free time sleeping

Catfish@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Kmart paint isnโ€™t worth bothering with. It has no depth and doesnโ€™t blend properly. Brushes donโ€™t need to be super expensive, but anything that cheap will shread in 2 minutes. Digital is totally different! Cats will drink paint water, it is inevitable. As are some unwelcome signatures ๐Ÿพ

Catfish@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

May I recommend these? Lots of colours, not crap and very not clutter. Grab one small pointy brush and one narrow flat one, or a cheap set Plenty to figure out if you like the hobby. These two pics will get you under $30. portable watercolours beginner brush set

I feel like I should be doing things on the breadmaker today. Naan or pull apart? Either way there will be cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeese

danwritesbooks@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (9 replies)

I bought a breadmaker on the weekend and have produced 2 poor attempts. They're really crumbly. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Maybe not enough liquid when it does the kneading.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (1 reply)

If the recipe calls for warm water, make sure it's warm (or borderline hot). The yeast activates better in my experience.

danwritesbooks@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

I'll give it a go next time.

Taleya@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (4 replies)

first question: Religiously following instructions? (You'd be surprised. Cooking is jazz but baking is SCIENCE with all the rigor). Up to and including the required order of ingredients?

What model maker?

danwritesbooks@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (3 replies)

Yeah following from the book that came with it. It just doesn't seem like it's enough, like it doesn't bind because it's too dry still.

It's a Breville Bakers Dozen.

Taleya@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (2 replies)

hmm breville are usually pretty damned good - got that one myself. Instructions are usually bang on.

what flour are you using?

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y

this is the answer. Different flour has different water absorption characteristics. Even the same brand will be different depending on the season of the year and when the wheat was harvested.

Add a tbsp water at a time until it's consistency/smoothness you want.

Most bread is btw 50-70 % hydration, ie, the water to flour ratio. https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/blog/2023/01/11/bread-hydration

danwritesbooks@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

I got one of those Bread Mix's from Safeway to see how it goes.

https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/252201/laucke-crusty-white-bread-mix

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Maybe the yeast is old or not activating very well for some reason? You can 'bloom' it in warm water with a little sugar first. If it goes all foamy it's working well and can be added. If it doesn't chuck it and buy a new packet.

I hear more liquid is good as well, you want the dough almost a tiny bit sticky and very soft then it should go more smooth and elastic as it kneads.

(I am not a bread expert. Just picked up a few tips when I used to make pizza dough, which is much more forgiving. Troubleshooting the most common stuff should help https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/baking-sos-how-solve-10-common-bread-problems-luis-troyano)

I'm reading a book on western/latin alphabet calligraphy and it has a page on Carolingian. I've been there, where the monk Alquin of York made this!! I've been to Charlemagne's Scriptorium in Aix le Chapelle.

Imma practice this one , it's kind of exciting to have that personal connection with history, even if it's just being there in the rooms 1200 years later to see where it happened.

I keep getting cheques in the mail from Medicare addressed to doctors who charged an out of pocket fee. The letter is addressed to me, the cheque isnt if that makes sense. This has only just started, but makes 0 sense that Im getting cheques addressed to the doctor right? Like, it aint my job to deliver shit to the doctor after they charged an out of pocket.

Is this some weird new thing Medicare are doing? I keep throwing them in the bin because its not addressed to me.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (2 replies)

Not a scam, actually a relic from the origins of Medicare - Pay Doctor Via Claimant (PDVC). See Medicare asking one million patients to hand-deliver cheques to pay doctors - 2017 article.

Ridiculous that it still exists. If you bin it the specialist/Dr just has to wait 90 days to get directly paid by Medicare

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

then thats what they have to do. Cozzi livs. I charge a fee for delivery, aint doing that shit for free with diesel prices being what they are.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

Well maybe it'll incentivise the practice to get with the times. Although I guess that once they to that it means patients will need to pay in full up front.

I think most practices still using PDVC do so to cater to patients who would struggle to front up the cash for the full amount (even just for the 24 hrs or whatever it takes before they get reimbursed) which is why I've only heard of it being used these days for more expensive treatments with higher Medicare rebate amounts.

If they can wear the 90 day delay in order to support these patients then good on them.

prime_factor@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (2 replies)

Medicare pays by cheque if the doctor provides you credit for the rebate, as a fraud control mechanism.

Medicare only allows electronic payments if the account is fully paid upfront (and then rebate claimed), or bulk billed.

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (1 reply)

as a fraud control mechanism

So what, I'm expected to go out of my way to deliver it cause medicare cant figure out a better fraud system? Yeah... thats gonna be a no from me.

prime_factor@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 2y

Some of the trouble is that paying upfront does provide confirmation that you did visit the doctor and paid for them.

Whereas an IOU for the rebate doesn't necessarily provide the same confirmation that a patient received the services provided.

I do think PDVC could be improved though with a threshold amount, rather than being based upon the absolutes of an account being paid / unpaid. A $100 payment made already on an account is probably enough of the patient's money to indicate that they did receive the service.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (2 replies)

The weird thing is it didn't need it. Strange I know.

Force_majeure123@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Blasphemy. Having eggs without butter is like having a wedding where you're the only spouse.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

Hahaha. Because there's fat in the cheese it helped a lot.

Wow, I might have to try that though does it work with bread slices that are fairly thin?

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

Yep

Quick laundry question. (Figured I'd ask as there's parents on here and it's probably similar to dealing with cloth nappies.)

For a small amount of fresh cat urine: A pre-wash cycle with biological detergent + dissolved sodium percarbonate in both the detergent and the bleach dispenser should take care of it right? Or do I need to soak the items in a warm/cool bucket of an enzyme powder like Pink Napisan first (or add an enzyme powder like that to the prewash dispenser) and then do the hot percarbonate wash? I sprayed the towels with enzyme pre-treater first but don't always.

I've been setting the machine to 40C to not damage the washable puppy pads but apparently it's more effective to use 60C with the percarbonate... With the prewash setting it uses cold water first and the Trimat Advanced Sensitive claims to be effective in cold/remove sweat stains... so rather than setting the stain, hopefully that's washing most of the pee out first and then the percarbonate hot wash is releasing peroxide to get the last of it. ๐Ÿคž

@melbaboutown @briongloid my maximum attack cycle (assuming you get the offending item fresh!) is presoak in a bucket of Sard soaking solution with the full quota recommended in the hottest water available for several hours. Then (front load machine) put another generous portion of Sard in the prewash dispenser and max half recommended detergent on a hot cycle (60+). Increase water level and rinse cycle as machine allows. Good luck!

Thanks! I'm used to doing dark washes with minimal/no stain removal necessary and have now changed to whites with heavy stain removal so wasn't sure if I was doing it right.

Which Sard variety was it please?

AWStephen@mastodon.au · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

@melbaboutown @AWStephen Sard Power Soaker. Bear in mind that Aldi now has very good equivalent products at sometimes significantly reduced cost. I just donโ€™t have 25yrs experience with it like Sard.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 2y

Thanks! The Aldi one is aggressively floral but I can look at the ingredients and find something similar or catch a sale

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (2 replies)

The first one is fine for fresh wee.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Thanks, that's good to know. I've been buying Coles generic soakers due to budget and tend to forget things are soaking so good to know that should do it

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

You only need to soak if you're not going to wash straight away.

Taleya@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (2 replies)

well fuck me, looks like SE water actually got out there and fixed that leak

Duenan@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

How long did it take after you sent the Snap solve thing in?

Taleya@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

Don't think that fixed it, unless the council cracked the shits at them (the owners had already alerted SE Water), but it was still pissing on saturday so its a recent development

This one is actually bloody good on the learning things and being interesting front. Not all schmoozing nonsense. Donโ€™t mind a free rice paper roll though.

Coming to the end of my Wondefalls rewatch, and Fox really did invent the "fucking with a good show for no reason" model.

Also Caroline Dhavernas only being in like three good shows (Wonderfalls, Hannibal, Mary Kills People) will never not be a travesty, I'm always so drawn into whoever she's playing when I watch her in something.
