Had my once-every-many-weeks check of LinkedIn on the desktop to see connection requests and the like. Found myself hit with that pang of realising how stagnant I was for years at my past role - can't blame the workplace entirely, but I feel like I lost so much of my more passionate years while hamstrung by visa conditions. I have the freedom now but not as much excitement any more...
Something definitely needs to change. I don't have huge ambitions but I also want to aim a little higher (in a sustainable way).... think with whatever experience I get in the next year and a half or so, I might be able to shift my career into something more interesting or substantial. Maybe do a formal qualification in spatial tech and get a gig in some cool environmental fieldwork company.
I probably might be still at my old job but further advanced and happier (everyone might've been happier) if it weren't for the impact of the lockdowns. The one upshot was that at the time, it paved the way for me to stay in this country permanently. I can't keep blaming the lockdowns now though, I do need to move on. Next week might bring some resolution about some options in that regard
I think there could've been scope to aim higher (expand my experience) at my last place, but not with the way management turned out in the last year.
My current gig is PT government, very low-level in the scheme of things (because at this exact moment I don't want a super challenging job), but an useful foot in the door after being denied opportunities all these years. I could easily do more complex roles with a bit of training but those positions are currently filled by fairly capable and willing people, so unless they leave, I think opportunities are limited (which is ok for now). I'll definitely stay for a year at least and see what else opens up.
Seeing how much further people who started around the time I did in this industry have gone, it's easy to feel a little bitter. But I can catch up and develop my own niche, I think...
I'm going to Daiso to buy some shit I don't need. It's my first time there although I vaguely remember there being one in Airport West many many moons ago or something similar. Anyway I'm off to buy some cute shit.

City outing with the fam today. Dinner on Lygon street. Ordered a beer and the waiter put it in front of my son. We had a chuckle and asked the waiter how old did he think my son was. The dude said 18+20 for sure.
I think it made my son's, who is actually 14, year.
Hating the darkness - struggle to see properly driving in the dark with the oncoming bright car headlights. I bought some yellow glasses to try. Canโt avoid it due to work.
The clock in my car sets the time automatically. From the radio stations. Which really sucks, as half of them are broadcasting with the wrong time. It isn't usually an issue, as when the phone is docked it shows the phone time. But if the phone isn't docked and I want to know the time, I need to tune to a station I know is broadcasting it correctly.
If your car is the same as mine, I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that the station you listen to hasn't updated their broadcast time for Daylight savings.

Had an appointment for an NBN tech visit yesterday morning, cause the internet in the place we moved into was shot. Mate came in at 830 in the morning.
He quickly determined it wasn't our box that's the problem, but a faulty thingamajig on the street post, but he didn't have the right parts on him. He had to leave, but he promised he'd get it sorted within the day. We were prepared to wait it out until the Monday, but mate came back on at almost 7pm on a Friday, just to get it sorted like he said, and sorted it he did.
Just thought that was so nice of him, and I really appreciate it. Gave him a drink early on, but wish I gave him more of it, and hopefully he doesn't mind all his work went into a night's worth of very bad Dota.
A beautiful day launching the new kids club at our neighbourhood house. We had almost 40 families join us and all the snags got eaten.
This was the first event I took a back seat on and I initially felt really guilty "leaving everyone else to do all the work" (even though my stepping back was planned and carefully negotiated, as I'm still dealing with mystery health issues) but the entire team remarked that it all came together easily as "many hands make light work" and for once we had enough funding to bring on the appropriate number of staff for the project!
The weather held out and I met so many amazing locals, I couldn't have asked for a better day.
And the timing worked out perfectly with the MRI I'd been scheduled for. Packed up after the event jumped on the bus, and got there at the exact right time.
Am I the only one who finds getting an MRI relaxing? It's an excuse to lie down and be still while zoning out and pretending I'm being faxed somewhere. The technician tried playing me some Muzak over the headphones and laughed when I asked her to stop because it was messing with my ability to enjoy the magnetic dubstep.

It's weird that 'aiming higher' means getting a new job, more often than not.
I honestly think that workplaces, in general, pigeon hole a person into a role and that's all.

If you can get a permanent government gig, they'll pay for your education in some cases.

Actually, I don't hate that beanie - if it's just a rainbow colour and not with a giant Aldi logo on it. I can't tell from the picture. I'd tear off that tag, of course.
Not that I've worn a beanie since I returned to Perth. They're a Melbourne thing. So, I don't intend to buy it. ๐

Yeah, would definitely wear that hoodie and those slides are kinda dope.

I would probably wear the hoodie but I wouldnโt go to Aldi just to get that.
