I always figured it was because metal is harder than rock.
bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de · 29 pts · 2y
But rocks are harder. Metal can bend where rocks would break.
Anticorp@lemmy.world · 29 pts · 2y
You're talking about brittleness and tensile strength, not hardness. Hardness is measured with the Mohs Hardness Scale, and there is significant cross-over between "rocks" and hardened metal.

Do you think any of the stoned motherfuckers in 1971 gave half a shit about this pedantry? Lol
“We don’t make cars from stone like the Flintstones, we make em from metal because it’s tougher” is as far as it goes my man
Daft_ish@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2y
I think there were pendants in the 70s

Ah! Might good sir be a fellow Mechanical Engineer?
(no one else considers stuff that break instead of bend to be "harder")

I‘d argue many people outside of the field are able to grasp it too
meekah@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 2y
But most people don't differentiate between hardness and toughness in day to day language
ObviouslyNotBanana@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 2y
That's just because it's really hard
meekah@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2y
Rock is usually harder though, but steel is more tough. Compared to a lot of other materials steel is still really hard, to be fair. At least that's my understanding, as someone who just googled "hardness vs toughness" lol
ObviouslyNotBanana@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2y
Yes, my comment was a pun
Fedizen@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 2y
depends on the "rock" and the "metal" (usually an alloy)
SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 2y
But metal can also split rock. Or crush it, or pulverize it, or drill it, or etc.
ivanafterall@kbin.social · 5 pts · 2y
But rock beats scissors and scissors are metal.
teft@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 2y
What about lead vs obsidian?
Check and mate, music nerds.
Nomecks@lemmy.ca · 13 pts · 2y
Diamond is the hardest metal. Ask any astrophysicist
Klear@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2y
Van Halen, then.
dukethorion@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2y
Neil Diamond is the softest.

Folk Ore?

Garage is adjacent to House. Typically smaller, usually hotter, and often used when you want to go faster.
Jungle is way the fuck out there but it is always an adventure. Full of endangered species and ancient treasures, more organic and mysterious.
Breaks is when you’re broke and at a strip club in Florida.
scarabic@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 2y
I’m so glad you invented metalbending
JasonDJ@lemmy.zip · 7 pts · 2y
That's Toph, buddy.

Toph is gangster as fuck
neidu2@feddit.nl · 2 pts · 2y
It's called progmetal
Kolanaki@yiffit.net · 8 pts · 2y
Does that mean heavy metal is just metal that is toxic in low doses?
VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world · -10 pts · 2y
That would check out. Have you seen how many heavy metal bands are composed of nazis?
Caligvla@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 2y
Low effort bait.
VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 2y
Actually not. Just not as funny as it sounded in my head.
