Anyone got a real source on this? I grew up near a forest that had loads of these, and all the leaves were always spiky. Sure, there were also loads of deer around, but I can't remember having ever seen a non-spiky one like that. Looks more like an odd mutation or so to me.

Cool! So it's European holly that does this. I've never seen a non-prickly American holly leaf, tho
pyre@lemmy.world · 75 pts · 2y
that's because the American is exercising its right to bear arms
reinei@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 2y
Wait are you saying it's because America had/has more bears still which cause the holly to be prickly or because Americans may carry guns‽
pyre@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2y
the latter; it was a joke about Americans fetishizing weaponry

I have; if you don't prune them the leaves stay straight

Humans are like this. In many cases an “asshole” is a human who had adapted to a more dangerous environment, at the cost of their pleasantness.

This is fascinating, but can you quickly explain the title you gave this? @fossilesque@mander.xyz
It’s crazy poetic and I’m wondering if you’re referencing anything?
