I think it's fairly common to dislike raw celery.

Kolanaki@yiffit.net · 17 pts · 2y (3 replies)

Put peanut butter in the crack and then it becomes a delicious snack.

herrcaptain@lemmy.ca · 31 pts · 2y (2 replies)

Out of context this means something very different.

Kolanaki@yiffit.net · 12 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Still delicious tho šŸ˜‹

I fuckin love celery

dditty@lemm.ee · 2 pts · 2y

Yep me too, just crunching on raw celery is great with or without Peanut Butter and I also add it to smoothies

Jessica@discuss.tchncs.de · 4 pts · 2y

There are apparently dozens of us!

underwire212@lemm.ee · 2 pts · 2y

I really dislike celery. I just don’t like the texture and flavor. Yucky

Feathercrown@lemmy.world · 39 pts · 2y (6 replies)

"Celery tastes like water" is somwthing people only say because they heard other people say it. It clearly does not

Texas_Hangover@lemm.ee · 11 pts · 2y (2 replies)

Where the fuck are you getting spicy celery?

OrgunDonor@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

I don't know if I would call it spicy, been a long time since I had just celery though. But I am really sensitive to the taste of it.

Even if you chop it up small and cook it into something, for me it ruins a meal and gives it this horrible aftertaste. Probably best described as puke, that kinda acidic taste

flicker@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 2y

I'm seconding what that other person said. You might have oral allergy syndrome.

Fun fact; that's how I found out I have oral allergy syndrome. I asked a friend how so many people can ignore the way bananas burn like that and apparently, they don't.

Celery is like the opposite of acid or burning or spice. It's green and water.

scutiger@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 2y

You may be allergic to it, because celery has zero spice.

Dicska@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2y

I think we're back to the cucumber controversy. Or the mushroom one. Anyone being able to smell ants...?

Rhubarb: now when you bit the water with hair in it, it tastes sour.

Kolanaki@yiffit.net · 11 pts · 2y (2 replies)

My sole reason for wanting to try rhubarb pie is because of people who've had rhubarb saying how sour it is. I fucking love sour stuff, and celery. So hells yeah I want some rhubarb. I never see it around here though 😬

photonic_sorcerer@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Rhubarb pie is one of my favorite cakes. Try it if you get the chance!

letsgo@lemm.ee · 0 pts · 2y

I want another slice of rhubarb tart.

BoxerDevil@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 2y (3 replies)

Isn't rhubarb poisonous before cooking

Daeraxa@lemmy.ml · 5 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Its the leaves that have a lot of oxalic acid, the stems are edible raw, just utterly unpalateable. Although if you have a miracle berry first it is apparently delicious - https://youtu.be/hgvRoCY0hNA?t=10m26s

BugleFingers@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y

You mentioning eating the stems raw made me think of it and instantly increased my saliva production. It's not easily palatable, it's intense, you're right, but man is it good. I grew up on that stuff. Cracking that raw stem and munching it while doing gardening is a stimmy miracle

argentcorvid@midwest.social · 1 pts · 2y

nope, just the leaves.

HUMAN_TRASH@lemmy.world · 18 pts · 2y (1 reply)

I don't know how people eat it, it tastes so horrible

Carrots are also more socially acceptable than my finger…

Celery is delicious and I will die on that hill

Mmmm crunchy water.

Romkslrqusz@lemm.ee · 12 pts · 2y (1 reply)

This is only true of the celery you find in grocery stores.

Grow some in your garden, you’re in for a world of flavor you never knew existed

blanketswithsmallpox@lemmy.world · -3 pts · 2y

Same shit people say about cucumbers and they all taste like bland ass. Literally worse than iced tap water.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celery

Raw celery is 95% water, 3% carbohydrates, 0.7% protein, and contains negligible fat (table). A 100-gram (3+1⁄2-ounce) reference serving provides 16 calories of food energy, and is a rich source of vitamin K, providing 28% of the Daily Value, with no other micronutrients in significant content (table).

I "peel" celery like how I peel a potato. So basically peel off the stringy part. Then I cut them diagonally or at a 45° angle. I then stir fry them with carrots and string peas and baby corn and shallots with some garlic and salt.

It's so crunchy and fresh tasting.

str82L@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 2y (3 replies)

At least it's also salty.

Dozzi92@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2y (1 reply)

That's really it, soup and stew. I opt for the celery root, toss it in a bag, call it a day.

fsxylo@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 2y

Also would make a killer white wine sauce for roast chicken.

NickwithaC@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 2y

And have it taste like eating shampoo or some other chemical soup not to be left within reach of children.

AnalogyAddict@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 2y

Growing your own celery is a game changer. Most produce we get in the store is hopelessly bland.

enbyecho@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 2y

Celery loses most of it's flavor quickly after harvest. When it's actually fresh it's extremely tasty.

TimLovesTech@badatbeing.social · 5 pts · 2y (5 replies)

The smell of raw celery makes me nauseous, especially when cut. Cooked in things I find the texture off-putting and tasteless, compounding the unwanted crunch added to something that shouldn't crunch.

trolololol@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2y (4 replies)

Cooked celery is not supposed to be crunchy. Grandma's recipe is cursed. I bet her broccoli is crunchy too, that's why it gets a bad rep.

TheFriar@lemm.ee · 6 pts · 2y (3 replies)

Broccoli should be slightly crunchy. Overcooked broc is gross

trolololol@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2y (2 replies)

Overcooked yes, but crunchy veggies are gross. It's a real drama now where I live, all the veggies are under cooked.

TheFriar@lemm.ee · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

There’s undercooked, but also perfectly crunchy when cooked right. Matter of opinion, I like my broc with a nice crunch. But also eat raw broccoli, so

Even Doctor Who doesn't like it, and he wore celery as a brooch for years.

iAvicenna@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 2y (2 replies)

cut celery into large chunks, put some olive oil, pop it into the oven and take it back when it starts to char and soft. mix it with mushroom saute (and stir fried beef if not vegetarian)

Nfamwap@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Then take the entire pot, and pour it's straight in the bin.
