I always liked the extended version:

extended version with distant future where we see it again

Kecessa@sh.itjust.works · 37 pts · 2y (1 reply)

You say extended but it's missing panels!

It's a retcon.

I hope we preserve all our robot heroes like this when we have settlements on Mars

Some scientists at CERN didn't like the sad ending.

pewgar_seemsimandroid@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 34 pts · 2y

it's confirmed, CERN certified.

I'm always amazed at how efficient us humans are at making me feel sorry for a cartoon robot!

Humanity and it's powerful need to personify objects

FuglyDuck@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 2y

Yes. But it was very loyal robot.

Sue me.

(The engineers certainly did a wonderful job building it!)

This is the way. We didn't abandon that awesome machine! It went above and beyond from day one and kicked ass! It's a true hero.

Change the music to "Enter Sandman", and the emotional priming doesn't work anymore.

One day humanity will reach for the stars and bring our little friend home.

If you think this is sad you should hear what happened to Sojourner, our first Mars rover. If it lost contact with the base station it was programmed to drive around to hopefully get line of sight so it can keep doing science.

However, the base station - Mars Pathfinder - failed first. Scientists didn't know what happened to them until the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter got detailed shots of the landing site. There were far, far more tracks from Sojourner than expected.

So this poor little robot was driving around and around, trying to get back in contact with NASA because it had more science for us, until it too died.
