So I guess we're all good now. Recruiter messaged back saying it was a great reference.

HR rang to let me know my start date and time, and what to expect on my first day.

It's done.

Thank you everyone for all your help and support ❤️❤️❤️

Now I'm going to give the cat a shit load of treats, and enjoy some video games without feeling guilty because I should be applying for jobs.

It's been a huge learning experience the last 6 months. I won't be forgetting the lessons any time soon.

StudChud@aussie.zone · 10 pts · 2y

Reference has been given. Sounds like it went well! Thanks again to the poster here who was able to help me with that. Very much in their debt.

Now I'll get a call from the recruiter later today or tomorrow which will give me the final word that we are all a go for next week.

Fingers crossed!

Edit: I send the recruiter a text to "touch base" and she said it was a great reference!!!

Thank you to the person who gave it this morning ❤️

I'm going to pretend everything is fine for next week. HR rang me yesterday letting me know who to meet and at what time.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

That’s the plan. I’ve done so before but didn’t get the procedure so I may need to keep returning

SituationCake@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 2y

I’m so sorry. That sounds awful. I really hope that things improve. I know it’s cliche, and easier said than done, but staying positive and hopeful can help with coping and recovering from medical issues. You can get through this. DT needs you, stay strong.

StudChud@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 2y

That's terrifying and I'm so sorry you're going through that. I hope things improve and you have naught to fear. Sending my love and good vibes💜

Happy Go-Live day folks! A project that should've taken max 3 weeks but ended up taking closer to 3 months is finally going in today. Threatened my team that if they bring up one more "Oh, BTW I just thought of X" in front of the vendor the next thing I deliver for them will be a resignation letter. I'm joking, but not really. I no longer care if we deliver the most broken thing in the world, I just want it off my damn plate.

SituationCake@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y

It’s for good reasons, woohoo! The body will get used to it, and we are past the solstice so sunrise is a tiny bit earlier each day which will make it easier too.

Just went through the performance discussion and I still have my job. It just seems like I'll be getting around on 1 HP at work for a while.

My biggest hope is nothing else happens any time soon as it will be too many mistakes close together. I think I'm going to work on getting out of here and at least this allows me to leave on my own terms.

Gibsonisafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

I'm sorry to hear it mate. Fingers crossed nothing bad happens until you've made a decision on whether or not to move on.

tombruzzo@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

I'll take things slow and check my work more before sending it off to other people. The work from home here is great but there isn't much scope to learn because everyone who built the stuff I work on has left.

Lets hopeI can get a 6 month run of things going smoothly to serve as a soft reset if I don't move on before then

tombruzzo@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y

I hate dropping my kids off at childcare. They cry when I leave and I feel like I'm turning my back on them. I want to have them at home but I can't give them the attention they need and work at the same time.

I hate this performance meeting I have coming up. The way it makes me feel and it's such a big deal over something so small. No one has been hurt and the business hasn't even lost money. There are things I could do better but everything feels so insignificant in comparison.

It really bugs me how I never see my MIL in the morning when we're getting the kids ready. We live in the same house and she knows the schedule, why do I never see her when we're trying to wrangle two kids out the door before work?

I've gained about 10kg, after all the work and exercise I did, and have a fat belly now and I'm depressed about it. Why are cakes so nice? Why is tiramisu so damn tasty? I seem to have to exercise like a maniac in order to indulge in a miserly stingy little bit of cheesecake, which makes me even more depressed, it's barely fucking worth it! So I'm watching my food intake, avoiding high fat and high sugar foods and I'm fucking miserable.

Been trying to teach myself how to make a business website using Wordpress, because I can't really afford to pay someone thousands to do it for me. Thought it would be easy to figure out for someone with slightly above average IT skills, but it's really not. Now I realise why people pay professionals for Wordpress websites.

Using a theme as a base is the way to go for a beginner like me, but so many of the free themes on offer are so template-y looking with zero design flair. I'd start with a basic theme thinking I could make it look good, only to realise that I can't and the customisation level is so limited (or I can't figure out how to make larger customisations).

Now after days of searching, I've found a nice looking theme that seems user friendly to work with. Starting all over again with customising it. Hope this one works.

tombruzzo@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (2 replies)

You can use a plugin like Elementor or Visual Composer to jazz up your layout. Inside Wordpress you can change colours and a bit of the appearance, but you're limited to blog style text block layouts unless you know how to go deep with HTML and CSS.

Plugins let you make those nice landing pages where you can really make a website your own.

tone212_@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Oh this is helpful, I’ll try out Elementor. I’ve been going to the website view inside Wordpress, clicking edit header / edit page and trying to make changes that way. But it’s really limited in what I can change. Any layout change with a theme block is basically a no go, so I’ve been trying to find a theme with the best layout possible that I don’t need to fiddle around with too much.

tombruzzo@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 2y

That's where plugins like Elementor are great. They work with any theme so you can find one you like, and use Elementor to actually build your pages.

Apple ain't shit.

Cendana@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (1 reply)

I wish there is a product where it combines the responsiveness, seamlessness and app integrations of Siri with the data sources of Google Assistant, that is available on iPhone 13.

Most of the time I just use it to message my wife and set timers while driving.

  • On GA, doing things is hit or miss, sometimes it confirms the action without actually doing anything. Sometimes it's able to tell me the dates of the Antipodes Festival and what time Kenangan is closing. Sometimes it just goes "sorry I don't understand" for every single command that's not related to navigation.

  • On Siri, if it understands my words then it reliably gets work done and quickly. But it refuses to answer any factual questions while driving.

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

Yeah I miss google assistant, but I preffer the apple platform. Googles worming its way into everything piece of tech is a bit unsettling. I have way less "damn guess I need to reset the phone" on iOS when compared to Android as well. Woulda kinda love windows phone to come back though.

Ahh... I've been feeding Melbcat lots of treats to keep her appetite up and her tummy lined, and they contain sugar in the form of molasses. At the vet I saw some redness on her gums and tartar on her teeth. I wonder how far I'd get with brushing them.

Unfortunately there aren't very many other treats she can have.

Catfish@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 2y

I’m not sure you can realistically start brushing teeth as an adult. Like bathing, start them tiny or wear chainmaile

SituationCake@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y

If she likes them and it keeps her happy then there’s nothing wrong with it, and don’t worry about teeth. At some stage in a pets life the long term impact vs quality of life balance is in favour of just keeping them happy. No point saving her teeth if that means she is miserable for the rest of her days? Our dog made it to 15 eating all sorts of things that were theoretically bad for him, with only 3 vet dental cleans over the years. He had a very happy life, no teeth brushing and no regrets.

Woke up really cold in the early hours. Blanket was down at the end of the bed so mystery solved. (I have doona + blanket on cold nights) Pulled it up again but tossed and turned since then. Might as well embrace it and call it wake up time now.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y

Slow, slow start to the morning. I told work I might get a bit done today but unlikely to be a full day and I wouldn't push myself. I'm kind of over lounging around on the couch watching TV all day (got through two seasons of Slow Horses yesterday).

Shitty sleep last night, sweated right though everything again :( so first port of call today, after a slow shower, was to get my big blanket washed at the laundromat. Coordinated nicely between that, picking up work laptop, taking a load of clothes washed at home, drying everything at the laundromat (might as well), food pickup in st kilda and a load of thermals at home.

Going round doing shit today has me feeling better. The sun is helping heaps. After lunch I'll do some light work until I can't. My bedroom feels like Sickness Central since that's where I've been feeling the shittiest, so it's getting aired out today in addition to a change of bedclothes. I hope the worst is over >:(

The best indicator for who will be president in America is, in my opinion, the betting markets. At this point they are basically the collective opinion of people who make money predicting these things based on all available evidence. Currently Trump is about a four to one favourite to win according to this indicator. Pretty amazing

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (2 replies)

I think people put too much stock in the "assassignation attempt = win" idea though. There are a whole bunch of things that were always considered to be true about US politics that Trump has proven to not actually be the case - a few years ago it would have been considered a rule of politics that someone who was even accused of a crime, suspected of sexual assaults etc. would never be able to win an election. Trump has broken all the "rules" so far, I don't think this is any different.

It's like rolling a five sided dice, four faces are trump; and if you bet $100 on trump to win, and he does, your profit would only be $20

StudChud@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (2 replies)

I see! Thank you! Explained like that it makes sense! I will try to store this information in my brain hahah

Using that example, if someone bet $100 on Biden, would that mean they get $400?

Edit: no. Would that mean they would profit $80, and end up with $180?

Force_majeure123@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

You would end up with 400 assuming the betting companies didn't take commision, but they do.

Force_majeure123@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

No you'd end up with 500

Gibsonisafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (7 replies)

Now that I've grabbed the extra characters, I'm 24/7 into breach guardians lol

StudChud@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (6 replies)

I still haven't bought any other characters lol. Just got frosty up to level 7, so 30% more dmg against frozen targets.

I do want to try the blood mage, she looks sick AF! They all do tbh. The non-binary butterfly blade looks cool as well

Gibsonisafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (5 replies)

The blood mage is unique in that you have to take damage to attack. So her built in skills, will always damage her (in a fairly small way) to inflict significant damage on enemies.

It's a whole different way to think about the game. So shields mean very little, and you have to get used to the idea of sacrifcing health to win. She's the one I got to the final boss of depth level 3 with. It was just too hard. I had something like 250 full health, got down to the last of 3 enemies, then got smashed with 50+ point attacks in a row.

I'm using the paladin robot character at the moment, and it's damage is insane. I got through all of depth level 1, only losing 7 health the whole time, and that was at the boss level lol

StudChud@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (4 replies)

Aw man I've been eyeing off Paladin! But yeah, I'm gonna have to grind a bit to even think about getting up to even the mid-boss on depth 3 haha.

I might grab the blood mage today, I think you've convinced me!

Duenan@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

You got me playing it a little bit at the moment, I can't wait till I can unlock a character though I'd have to choose my first one carefully.

Fuck yeah! I think every character you unlock is stronger than the last.

Blood mage was amazing, but paladin has a whole other style of play. Takes getting used to but when they're "super charged", they do 60% more damage per attack.

Item 3 was me a few days ago. Had an order of alcohol turn up at my door - the courier had mixed up the unit and street numbers.

Have come home hungry so I made peanut butter toast.

Came back annoyed from work because I think someone went through my drawers for a stapler which I’ll double check tomorrow morning when I get in.

I will be confronting this person and telling them that going through my office drawers was inappropriate and violated my personal space.

I don’t understand why people don’t know boundaries.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Would that be personal office space? 🫥 🔥

Duenan@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

Yes and any of my personal possessions that I store in my drawers.

It makes me angry.

I really like the community on here. It's a great place to hang out and I like keeping up with what everyone else is doing. I usually have a personal policy of not putting anything on the internet but here is just the right size and feels private enough I like commenting.

TAFE orientation done. Should I have a nap, or power through? MIL arrives from WA today and said to partner something about drinks tonight. I don't know if I'll make it if I don't nap, but I don't want to mess up my sleep cycle much more.

Ugh! I type this all out while making a coffee 😑

Rang Tenants Vic for last night's issue.

Amongst many things, these two stood out:

  • Under RTA S72 Was told that rental provider must repair within 48 hours
  • Under RTA S67 quiet enjoyment of premises, and that I should be able to use all facilities and rooms to full extent.

But I couldn't find anything written to support the "48 hours" figure and the "full extent" statement that I could refer to in the next email, any idea?

Agent pushed back saying it's normal for the switch to trip if we overload the circuit lol. No shit. But if the apartment's power is cut off from an outside switchboard that only owners corp can access... gotta wait 3 days for someone to come and fix it.

And for clarity:

  • Switchboard inside apartment: Oven, hot water, and I think the stove are on their own circuits. No idea where the bathroom heater is wired up to.
  • From outside of the apartment: aircon on one "line", oven/hot water/stove/bathroom heater on another, other outlets on another.
  • Using oven/hot water/stove/heater together apparently cuts the power to the whole apartment from outside, but from what I can gather, we would be fine using a smaller combination of the above, our own portable heaters and aircon together lol.

Scary movie review part II

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

I forgotted the most important part of my review.

This movie tells teens they have the ability and innate psychological strength to face adversity and that they don't need protecting from stories about tragedy and trauma and that facing trauma is a part of healing.
