In Mexico it's called Montezuma's Revenge. In Bali it's called Bali Belly. What other colloquialisms for gastroenteritis are there around the world?

In Pennsylvania it's called the Hershey squirts.

Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world · 21 pts · 2y (2 replies)

This sounds like a joke, but we really do say that!

Chocrates@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 2y (1 reply)

My dad used to say this. None of my family has ever even been to Pennsylvania to my knowledge though, lol

iheartneopets@lemm.ee · 3 pts · 2y

Same, I don't think this is a Pennsylvania-ism

owatnext@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 2y (4 replies)

I have heard it called that and I physically recoil every time I hear it.

Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 2y (3 replies)

And underwear streaks are referred to as Hershey Highways.

sunzu@kbin.run · 2 pts · 2y (1 reply)

the older you get, the more frequent the highways

Hershey PA contained by far the largest morbidly obese humans I've ever seen, like fascinating. All seats must be benches.

ladel@feddit.uk · 41 pts · 2y

There's Dehli Belly as well. No alliteration, but it's got the rhyme.

I never liked the term Montezuma's Revenge. Moctezuma the Second was an accomplished leader and deserves more respect than to have his name misspelled with a diarrhea diagnosis.

That being said I got it right as I left Mexico from vacation and prayed for death to take me.

tilefan@lemm.ee · 25 pts · 2y (1 reply)

I like the idea that he's so powerful and vengeful that he's returning from the grave to fuck with Europeans

MisterNeon@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 2y

His name translates roughly "angry lord" or "lord he who frowns/grimace" so I like the idea he's just mean mugging the descendents of man until the end of time.

Crackhappy@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 2y (1 reply)

I totally agree with you on Moctezuma. Tourists ruin everything. Especially their own digestive tracts.

MisterNeon@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 2y

I wanted to go see Tenochtitlan and Teotihuacán. Worth it.

"Beaver Fever" is the occasional Canadianism I've heard, although its specifically for giardiasis.

Hugh_Jeggs@lemm.ee · 2 pts · 2y

That sounds utterly horrific for a vagina

Window_Error_Noises@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 2y

It's probably a term used elsewhere too, but in the US Navy, when it's coming from both ends, especially stationed or deployed on ship, it's the double dragon. Ship food is bad. Ship food is rejected prison food. Moldy. Horrible. Absolute garbage. Garbage would probably be safer.

m0darn@lemmy.ca · 11 pts · 2y (2 replies)

Is that what we call Beaver Belly in Canada? (from drinking contaminated water?)

vatlark@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 2y

I have heard "beaver fever"... but typing it out for the internet just makes it sound like a euphemism.

Crackhappy@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2y

Yeah.

US here. When I was a kid in the early 70s, in the Midwest we called it Hershey Squirts.

I do know that when you're walking down the hall, and you feel something fall, it's diarrhea. Uh uh! Diarrhea !

Devorlon@lemmy.zip · 6 pts · 2y

From Scotland and the family calls it "the runs".

I think for a nice universal slogan we should rally...behind.... "Throwing soup"

z00s@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 2y (5 replies)

I like the actual German name for it, "durchfall". When I look in the toilet, it looks like something that would be called "durch". And yep, it fell right outta me lol

meekah@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 2y (4 replies)

German here, durch means through. As in it fell through your intestines. At least that has always been my interpretation

Hugh_Jeggs@lemm.ee · 2 pts · 2y (3 replies)

Everyone in the UK of a certain age knows what durch means because of Audi

Revan343@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Durch Audi is a much worse slogan than Das Auto

meekah@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2y

The Slogan is "Vorsprung durch Technik" - advantage through technology

norimee@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2y

Why?

prex@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

The squits. You don't want to be a squitter

amenotef@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Every time I get it (like once every 2-3 years) for me it's never with diarrhea.

Just agonizing with a lot of vomits, fever, congestion, coughing, muscle pain etc.

Crackhappy@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2y

Oof that's so much worse.

Aeternal1@hilariouschaos.com · 3 pts · 2y

TIL a childhood game was a shitty joke I missed my whole life🤣

Manzabar@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 2y

Huh, I'd never heard of this meaning to Montezuma's Revenge. I was only familiar with the old video game.

;p

norimee@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Can xou explain how you got there or are you just here to offend people?

RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2y

Andrew Wakefield invented a new form of gastroenteritis that he "theorized" caused autism.
