Thanks! My drunk of choice is herbal or matcha tea actually. I gave up for a few different reasons, basically the kids, the money and the health. I'd been using it as a coping mechanism for too long when it wasn't working, the kids deserve to see better role modelling and every other adult person in their lives drinks so somebody has to not. I don't begrudge others a bevy though.
Good on you for not drinking when things are tough.. it's an easy way to end up with hard problems sometimes.
My girlfriend has finished her first day of her final placement. It would be great if she got a job out of this. It's a more chill childcare centre because it gets direct government funding and it's a 5 minute walk from our place.

Had a radox salt bath last night (would've bought it 15 yrs ago). Haven't had an actual bath in donkeys ears. Trying to undo some back niggles from the weirdo twisting weight / angle stuff with this fukn retaining wall.
In my raver days used to come home at an ungodly hour, after the all night boogie, jump in the bath with that green stuff then really struggle to crawl out.
They were good times. These days not so much. No rave, only pain.
the mrs honestly thinks a bath will cure all. Back Spams? Bath. Got a cold? Your going in the bath! Missing a limb and bleeding out? Believe it or not, bath!

Housesitting this week which means I have a backyard momentarily. Am making to most of it and working outside in the sun. Need to find myself a good spot near home in the sun/nature that I can go to work sometimes because this is nice.
Each time I get my tax info from the ATO, there's a breakdown of where the money is going.
About 30% of my paid taxes goes to aged care. I'm not saying we shouldn't take care of the elderly and we have an aging population, but imagine if we actually invested a chunk of that into our future and education.
I know that aged care employs a lot of people and provides good services, but the proportion just seems massive.
My concern is more if THAT much is going into it why are some of them living in such squalor? I've 0 issue looking after the aged care, they should live like kings after paying taxes all their lives. But I have a massive issue with paying that much for what were getting. Imagine you spend 100k on a new BMW and the dealer delivers a MG and pockets the rest.
That would have to include pensions and other welfare instead, I think actual aged care is about 8% of govt. expenditure.
A lot of the problem is that aged care is just really expensive, especially as we are able to keep people alive for longer with higher needs. We also have a system which sucks a lot of money out into the hands of private providers, which is not something I can see changing as long as the dominant cultural opinion is that Govt. services = expensive bureaucracy, and that private providers = efficient, competitive services. The reality is generally the opposite, especially when services are being provided to vulnerable people who are not able to advocate for themselves. A system where elderly people who are struggling to manage on their own are expected to compare providers and shop around for the best deal is ridiculous, but that is what we have. And instead of the scams and rorting by providers who overcharge and mismanage the care packages being addressed, they are adding in more restrictions on what elderly people can actually receive. A top level home care package can provide $60k a year in funding - about $21k of that goes directly in management fees to the package management company, then more gets sucked out through fees with the agencies that actually provide the staff, high profit margins on supplies and equipment etc.
LOL, would kill to be missed! Right now its just "Mum mum mum mum mum mum mum". I know its a phase and he will get through it, but damned if it doesnt sting a bit.
Iโve been teaching Melbcat how to use a snuffle mat. Sheโs been needing some hints such as me scratching at where I hid the treat and flipping the fabric up a little bit but sheโs definitely got the idea. Sheโs snaffled it a few times by biting at the hiding spot.
Iโm even seeing some tentative paw boops and hoping it means sheโll learn to lift the flap.
(Sheโs very bright and was a fantastic mouser until no longer allowed to hunt. Going after something immobile like a hidden treat is just not instinctive for a cat. And itโs only been a few demos.)
Took today off to focus on uni, predictably I have been "busy" with life admin/house chores... gone out to get a coffee, organised a drs visit, bought groceries, doing heaps of laundry... ๐คช
That said I have a meeting with an uni person at 2pm which will light a bit of a fire under my bum. And I have mapped out exactly which papers to read and in what order so I'm confident I'll make some progress.
I think my sports itch has been soundly satisfied for a while. That was a fantastic Olympics. We were in third place on the medal talley right up until the Japanese wrestlers wiped the floor with everyone over the weekend.
The heartwarming little video of the US Long Jumper and her husband got me to wondering how many similar stories were untold among the Ten Thousand athletes. A couple of the Marathon Walkers kissed at their introduction. Because they're engaged. They keep talking about the thousands of condoms issued to athletes in the village, but some of those hookups turn into something more. It's all very sweet. I love how positive the tournament has been in general.
Anyway, I still have a few events left to watch - probably tonight/tomorrow night. Maybe the Closing ceremony. Then I'll go back to not really watching sports all that much any more. At least until the 2026 World Cup.
I would probably watch some of it if it didn't cost another $27. I'll have to satisfy myself with the YouTube highlight clips.
We paid the $27 for the Olympics on the day of the opening ceremony, so our month runs out the day before Paralympics starts. It isn't only the money, we honestly have overdosed a bit in the house for sport. The kids have gone to bed late pretty much every night over the last two weeks. We justified it a bit with "it's only a couple of weeks every four years".
I think it was mostly money well spent. My biggest complaint was the Stan editing team didn't bother editing the field events, like at-all. The Pole vault competition for example could have been edited out to under an hour if they cut all the waiting around, but they didn't bother. Same with pretty much all the jumps and throws. Most of them also had no commentary. No editing at all - just the raw feed.
Same story with many of the less popular events. Just the base feed. This wasn't always bad, though - in fact I'd like the option to turn commentary off sometimes.
My best Olympic experience was when I had access to the British iView service during the London Olympics. It was like what we had with Stan: Every event live or on-demand, ad free. But the interface was loads better. That's probably the other bad thing about Stan - the Interface sucked sometimes. They did try, to be fair. But finding some events was just not doable. I wanted to find the final Archery match between India and Canada - I never did.
Poor pole vaulter? That image is worth framing! 'I lost the Olympic pole vault because my pole was too large' (He didn't - that bar was already falling because his calves knocked it before he even went over - but the bulge photo is marvellous). His jump will be a highlight reel for years.
I'm trying to fit gym, tennis, swimming and other sports into my calendar and it's lookin a real busy. I want to gym 3x minimum but this is what I'm mostly struggling with. Maybe I could combine swimming and gym on Thursday and squeeze in a rest day on Wednesday? idk
I love the local redistribution system of stuff we have here. I put out books yesterday, old beads n stuff in little bags, odd glassware, a decanter set I have never used and never will use. Today it is all gone.
I love being on a train through the city loop, and closing my eyes. I can feel the train take the turns in the loop, the slight sway and shift in my centre of gravity.
I imagine the train is going faster than it is, and I'm zooming through fantastical futuristic cities or alien landscapes or in space and it's like flying.
The footage is enough for a police report. If you know who it is and can provide the police with enough information to identify the rider, then they will probably act on that.
Even if all you give them is an example of this bike doing this at 4am, when the guy is eventually apprehended, they'll pile this onto whatever he is charged with.
then yeah I'd be going to the cops, and contact your organization and tell them your being harassed by him. Make it their issue. They are the ones who F'ed up, right?
Making glacial progress on the readings... feeling very easily distracted... I technically have a sickie to last me from today to Wednesday (more for uni purposes), but I'd feel bad taking time off work and creating more work for my colleagues, when I'm actually well enough to work, after being sick for 2 weeks last month.
Maybe I could use it for Wednesday. Or at least ask to work from home on Wednesday. Time is crucial, this thing is due next Sunday and I want to finish a draft by this Friday. (I have also applied for an extension, but I refuse to let this drag - plus there are time sensitive components that need to get into motion soon)
The other night I thought "I wonder when Madame Web comes out online, I'm curious to see how bad it is" and then found out that it had been out for a while, I just somehow missed it. Odd considering how often I check recent releases.
Anyway I tried to watch it and I made it maybe 10 minutes in before I couldn't take it anymore. They were not kidding about it being bad. It has some of the worst acting I've seen since The Room, and I've seen Morbius.
I'm a big superhero movie/content fan but this will just be one of the very rare superhero things I'll never watch.
I checked Metacritic for that one to see what people are saying. I've never played the game so I wouldn't be offended by any butchering the IP but apparently it's just bad. I think I'll wait for it to be on Netflix or Prime or whatever.
That classic balancing act of whether to take the kids to childcare and risk getting a call to come pick them up, or have them stay home and deal with them the whole time.
My boy is in better spirits now the rest of the family is up, so I'll take my chances taking them in
Binged through all of Fake on Saturday night. Man, it was compelling, almost like an Aussie Baby Reindeer. So many things that were infuriating in how people were acting.
Also watched The Instigators with Matt Damon and Casey Affleck. Story isn't all that flash, but I thought it was hilarious. The banter between characters gave me a good laugh most of the time.

It was going to, but I got a packet of parmesan garlic cauliflower to air fry, so I'm going to try that instead of the cabbage.

Don't forget the Paraylmpics will be on.
Nath@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y
I would probably watch some of it if it didn't cost another $27. I'll have to satisfy myself with the YouTube highlight clips.
We paid the $27 for the Olympics on the day of the opening ceremony, so our month runs out the day before Paralympics starts. It isn't only the money, we honestly have overdosed a bit in the house for sport. The kids have gone to bed late pretty much every night over the last two weeks. We justified it a bit with "it's only a couple of weeks every four years".
CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 2y
That's fair enough. It's a shame it costs money to watch some of these sports.
Nath@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

That poor pole vaulter - that has to hurt
Nath@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 2y
Poor pole vaulter? That image is worth framing! 'I lost the Olympic pole vault because my pole was too large' (He didn't - that bar was already falling because his calves knocked it before he even went over - but the bulge photo is marvellous). His jump will be a highlight reel for years.

I love the local redistribution system of stuff we have here. I put out books yesterday, old beads n stuff in little bags, odd glassware, a decanter set I have never used and never will use. Today it is all gone.

I had a dream last night about water some sort of edible plant and it was starting to wilt by the end of the dream.
I remember also eating one leaf or stem or something and it was the most flavourful delicious thing I've ever eaten.
Being awake now and it being a vegetable I know that's a lie.

Playing an old LP I found of Adrian Boult conducting Vaughn Williams/Tallis. This is a much more orchestral version than Neville Mariner.
This music gives me Indy and the Last Crusade chills. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04wJKXn3opY
