I wrote this whole thing about mum and dad, and whatever, and I just can't be bothered.

It hurts Mum is off the deep end and hasn't tried to make amends or meet my boundaries for a relationship. It's like she's given up and gone full boar into her delusions, and I'm left behind as a "possessed devil worshipper".

Like, she isn't even Christian or anything, just super spiritual and lost within her schizophrenic angel-and-demon obsession. That demons and devils, and "evil psychics from the US" are committing "psychic assaults" and causing mental illness.

I just want my fucking mum back.

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y

Aw fuck spud I'm sorry to hear that ๐Ÿซ‚

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y

Iโ€™m sorry Spud. Sometimes people just canโ€™t be who we need them to be but it doesnโ€™t hurt any less.

Donโ€™t internalise any of that crap :(

SituationCake@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y

So sorry. I have a parent that went full extreme right wing conspiracy nutter during covid and has never come back. We donโ€™t talk anymore, after much trying on my part and none on theirs. I have no advice other than look after your own mental health, because you probably canโ€™t do anything about theirs. They have 100% certainty in their righteousness. I hope your situation is not as bad though. Itโ€™s rough, because itโ€™s like loosing a parent. Actually, it is loosing a parent. Youโ€™ll grieve and wonder why. But youโ€™ll feel better in time if you prioritise yourself. Took me too long to learn that.

Bottom_racer@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

Really sorry to hear that.

I'm so sorry. So many hugs.

Gratitude thread. I'm grateful to have a roof over my head, and glad it's still attached.

Grateful for the SES and all of the various emergency workers.

And grateful for fluffy cats.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 1y (10 replies)

I'm grateful that my no more late night snacking has resulted in a 500g weight loss. I've done nothing else differently.

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (3 replies)

I was doing ok until I recently said I was, then I jinxed it ๐Ÿ˜” Glad you've got some results though, well done!

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Thank you.

I was mindlessly snacking when I wasn't hungry so I decided I wasn't gonna eat after 8pm.

Jump back on the train with me. Eat tea, have dessert if need be and then stop after 8pm. That's all. Baby steps.

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Eating when you're not hungry does me in, but the reason is that my biggest problem is also eating to avoid food being wasted. I think, "look that'll get thrown out, can't waste it," and I'll eat it when I'm not hungry, especially things that aren't freezable or good for lunch the next day. I'll have to maybe start making smaller portions.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

Oh I see. Yeah I hate waste too.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (3 replies)

i too have stuck to my new eating plan. No snacks on errands, no bikkies at all, no desserts or cakes will be made . I have no idea if I have lost weight.

have been on decaf after 3 pm for the past month

I will also forgo store bought roti and parathas and only eat healthy home made fat free ones if i have them at all

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Woah. Way to go!

I'm wondering if you sleep better without the caffeine after 3pm? I don't have a problem with sleeping but I know others do and I'm just curious.

I'm grateful that the doggo who randomly 'attacked' me yesterday on the way back from the shops had no idea what it was doing. Out of no where just launched itself at my bum. Mum and daughter walking it off leash on a main road (big no no) about 30m behind me and it just went for me (poorly). Daughter ran up to 'stop' doggo which was nice of her. Mother was yelling 'thank you, thank you!' but I'm not sure if that was directed at the dog, the daughter or me.

Then neighbours' doggo ran up for a pat as I was just getting home. No issues with that one. Good doggo.

Just wanted to show off my Opa's pond for his goldfish. The netting is to stop kookaburras from eating them (a few had been lost to them in the early days).

There are three orange goldfish, one white, one mottled, and one entirely black one. The photo below has them all in it, I was so happy to get the black one on camera. They blend in so well, and with the reflections, I can sometimes only spot him if he pops his head above the water.

I'm reading up on the psych of hoarding again. Too many family members are effected and I'm sick of doing the clean ups.

at the same time I have a horror of thinking whenever the house is a bit messy or I have stuff " god I hope I don't have it

anotherspringchicken@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (2 replies)

I can see hoardery traits in myself, so Iโ€™ve been working on decluttering and not letting it turn into a problem. Iโ€™ll never be a minimalist but itโ€™s nice to have space in the house.

E: I do think being self-aware is what helps stop it getting out of control. And having cleared a hoarder house in the past means I donโ€™t want to inflict that on anybody else, too

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

I think humans have innate tendencies to own objects, we use tools, we need clothes, we cook and we store food. It's biology and culture.

But it's just been to easy to buy things and that's why we have too much stuff.

It's like food, we love sweet and creamy, it's biology, so in a land of milk and honey it's too easy to put on weight.

Like you said, we have to be aware. ๐Ÿ‘

Anxiety can tell you lies. You did the right thing to overcome it and go for your goals. New things can be stressful, this is completely normal. The trick is not to never be nervous, but to overcome it. It will become less with each class as you gain confidence in your achievements. Yay you!

Unfortunately not. Tree is in the backyard of a known anti-vegetation anti-mess maven. That is, a person who dug up ALL the bare earth in the backyard except for the tree (which is huuge and on the council register) and replaced it with tamped gravel and astroturf to save on mowing. Has been known to apply roundup to the nature strip in the street at the first hint of a weed, and talks frequently about hating 'mess'. Not generally liked as a person.

  • my uni stuff got sorted in the nick of time
  • I don't need to redo my assignment
  • I found out I have until 28 Oct to rectify my whole 3G phone network bizzo. Two more months of breathing space to enact firmware hack or give up and buy a new phone.
  • I'm doing so much overtime I could probably take an extra day off and stretch it to 10 days away in Perth
  • can avoid today's Angery Customer until Friday
  • avoided all the Weather today
  • have stash of ready-made food in freezer
  • pay day this week yey thank fuck
  • barely used my car, can save on filling up until next low point
  • long awaited haircut this week

It's gonna be alright... tries not to dramatically sob into pillow

Duenan@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Might be handy to have someone there with you with the angry customer as a support as well as a witness.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

I've definitely put my foot down on meeting this person solo. The people who'd normally go with me aren't available til next week. After which point we are past the deadline. I've communicated this back and provided a solution that I think should satisfy everyone... but it's not my problem until Friday, meanwhile let's hope someone monitors the shared inbox.

The person who normally goes on site and meets customers if necessary does it solo, I don't quite have his mental fortitude! Not gonna hold myself up to his standards.

Back from my week off in NZ. Absolutely stunning scenery all around, it was just one incredible vista after another and I wondered how this place was real.

Had a couple days skiing as well, thankfully I remembered how to snowboard even though the last time I was at the snow was something like 8 years ago, much fun had. One aspect I had forgotten is how bloody expensive skiing is. It was more worth it for this trip because I wasn't just going there for skiing, but I can't imagine sinking that kind of money to go to the Victorian ski resorts.

Back at it today and still exhausted even after two recovery sleeps, not even the wind could keep me awake last night. I think I've reached the age where I need my own accom when going away with a group of friends, because I was only getting 5 - 6 hours of sleep in our Airbnb house every night and while I didn't really feel it there, as soon as I got home it all hit me.

Apparently I missed a lot of wind?! My backyard looked like it had been trashed.

bull@aussie.zone · 9 pts · 1y (2 replies)

I cannot win. Yesterday I went down to the docs to get my blood tested to see how tasty it is, only to be told that they're at capacity for the day (11am) and come back another day.

Today I go in, take a number and get called in only to be told that I've OVER FASTED by an hour or so. I had no idea you could over fast for a blood test. Apparently the sweet spot is between 8 and 12 hours of fasting and I was on hour 15. The lab generally doesn't do tests over 14 hours.

And today is my last day in Melton so I'm going to have to come back another time, which isn't so bad because I can come visit my family. I wasn't going to see the doc again to get results for a month so I'll just do it on one of the weekends coming up I guess.

Annoying because I psyched myself up for the needle.. twice.. I am historically not great with needles/having blood drawn.

Mittens_meow@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

I did not know that either. And all that effort into psyching yourself up, gone to waste. I hear you on that, itโ€™s hard to get there.

Eagle@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

Went to sleep in the foothills of the Dandenongs. With all the noise last night, surprised the house isn't now in Kansas...

Five-year-old woke up at 3:30am upset from all the noise, and that was pretty much the end of our sleep for the night!

Everything appeared intact this morning at least. Dream drive in to work, nobody on the roads - I'm very jealous of the WFH-brigade!!!

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 1y

Miniest couldn't get to sleep at first due to the noise, then wouldn't stay asleep. Didn't help having a half demolished house down the road, lots of banging and loose sheet metal type of noises. If I sent her to school she'd fall asleep at her desk, which she's done before, so she can stay home. Wish I could too, but I'm off to work in an unusually empty bus.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 1y (1 reply)

That was some feckin wind alright. Woke up a few times overnight. Had weird dreams of living for a few days in a hippie commune in the mountains of northern NSW and then leaving - only to be accosted on the outside by various people coming for me because of downed trees in their front yard... and I couldn't get back into the commune because it was blocked by downed trees everywhere.

Was gonna walk to work this am but maybe I'll tram it in and walk back instead. NO MORE BED!!! ๐Ÿ’จ

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (8 replies)

Same. I made a dozen beef and mushroom pies yesterday. That's dinner and lunches for a few days.

also, one day could you post how you make pea & ham soup, that's one dish I've never been able to do.

TheWitchofThornbury@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y (3 replies)

Delighted to. P & H soup is a staple for me. When the freezer runs dry I whomp up another batch. I vary it according to what I have in the fridge, but this is the basics.

1 250g packet of split peas (any colour) green is traditional but yellow is just as nice. Red lentils - see method below. This is a good way to use up any part packets you have in the pantry as mixing more than one sort is really really nice. 1 large carrot, topped and tailed and chopped into chunks - I don't bother peeling these. The big winter maincrop carrots are the best. The tiny dutch carrots are nothing like as good. This adds a subtle sweetness to the soup. 1 brown onion - skinned, topped and tailed but left whole, with 2 cloves stuck into the cut end. About 1/2 bunch of celery stems - chopped into chunks plus please include the celery leaves if any. 1-2 bay leaves - these are essential About 6 peeled cloves of garlic - use more if you like it I large chopped potato - I don't bother to peel this but you could if you wanted to. It helps thicken the soup. 1 ham hock - Aldi sell these in plastic wrap that looks and feels like fingernail clippings, as do colesworth and most butchers. You want the smoked kind. Size is irrelevant.

Optional - 1 star anise, 2-3 cardamom pods, 1 tsp toasted cumin seeds. Pick one of these but NOT all of them.

Method. Rinse the peas well in cold water and soak in cold water for at least one hour or overnight if possible. Doesn't have to be in the fridge unless the weather is hot. They will swell a LOT, so you may need to top up the water from time to time. Don't soak red lentils - just rinse them just before filling the pot. Remove ham hock from plastic, identify the meaty side and cut two deep slashes across the meatiest bit.
In a slow cooker or large stock pot, put in the carrot chunks, the celery chunks and leaves, the onion and then the ham hock. Add in the soaked peas/rinsed lentils (drained) the bay leaves, the garlic and other flavorings. Gently pour in COLD water to cover the whole by about 1 cm. It's important that everything is covered with the water.

IMPORTANT - DO NOT ADD SALT! If you do, the peas will NEVER cook properly but will remain hard and bulletlike for ever.

Start the pot cooking on very low heat - it should take at least an hour to start to bubble. Skim off any white foam. Let the pot cook at a very gentle simmer for several hours. A slow cooker on high will take at least 3-4 hours. A stock pot on the stove nearly that long. It's done when you fish out a few peas from the mix and can easily squash them between two fingers. But you can cook it longer if you like and it's all the better for it.

Once cooked, fish out the ham hock (which will be on the point of disintegrating into its component parts), fish out the bay leaves and the star anise if using and discard them. Let the pot cool down a bit then use a stick blender to make the remaining pot contents as finely blended as you like. I like a bit of texture, but silky smooth also works. At this point you can salt it to taste if you think it needs it.
Let the ham hock cool down a bit, then strip off the skin and separate out the bones and gristle. Keep the meaty bits - shred or chop these and stir back into the soup. The bones skin and gristle can be recooked with more water to make ham stock if you can be bothered. Otherwise discard them. At this point you can freeze portions of soup, or even better let the pot rest in the fridge overnight for even more flavor. You know you've made a good batch when you take the pot out of the fridge and hold it up so the surface is vertical and it doesn't even wobble.
Then just scoop out portions to heat up in the microwave and serve. I like to serve it with crusty bread and maybe a splash of tabasco sauce over the top of the bowl. Meal fit for a king that.

Quantities above will make about 8-10 serves. You can add more water for more serves or larger ones once cooked if you want. It's not possible to make a small batch of P & H soup. But it does freeze very very well.

TheWitchofThornbury@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

Doing it with sausage, you might like to add a ham bone or chicken bones or some such so that it gels properly. The lovely thing about ham hock is that the liquid comes out rich in gelatin/collagen from the bones.

StudChud@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 1y (1 reply)

The wind it has me brooding, edgy,
Like my thoughts, an imperfect similie
Perhaps I force my lines, they don't come naturally,
I am an amateur at everything, actually.

No power since 1030am. Estimate restore time 4pm tomorrow. Thankful for gas hot water and cooktop, ryobi fridges and the fire to keep us warm. Hopefully we wake up overnight with every light we've mistakenly turned on glowing.

StudChud@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 1y

That's nuts bro. I hope it comes back quicker than that!

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y

That's fucked! I'm glad you have backups - warmth especially. Hope they restore power sooner. If not, then hope you at least get through the night and can get out during the day.

It came back on at 3am! Praise to the electricity gods!

Break time at last!

Unexpected but got a nice swirly pattern in my coffee today.

This part of Mernda is a weird spot. The sun is out here, but it can be raining on the other side of Plenty Road or just down at the next train station. It might be the big hill to the southwest of here

Bottom_racer@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y

Cherry blossom getting there through the wind:

Next to pop are the echiums. Both flower almost concurrently and creates a sort of bee super highway as they go back and forth that you can hear from 10m+ away.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y

Just had a short walk, not too much damage nearby. A few fallen wheelie bins and a food cupboard blown over. The remaining cupboard had plenty of English muffins, so that was good. When the wind dies down it's quite nice outside.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Oooo. Ok it's getting dark here now.

Sunshine is back. I thought it had knocked off for the day but it turns out it was just smoko.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (1 reply)

sunny and windy after the 3-4 blocks of darkness

Oh dear lord, just come back in from my outside duty.

The wind chill is crazy out there, I'd freeze first before being blown away out there today.

I swear it was just cutting through all the clothes I was wearing today.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Sun was out on my way to work but had 3 layers on including a friggin ski jacket like it was the depths of winter again.

Just had to go down to our loading dock to pick up an equipment delivery and can no longer feel my hands :|

Duenan@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

it wasn't much fun, I was out there for about an hour and I definitely felt it with multiple layers, a scarf around my face and a beanie as well.

Mittens_meow@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

Itโ€™s cutting through my Aldi ski hoodie - and Iโ€™m wearing 2 pairs of pants and itโ€™s too cold. At least we could get some rain to water the garden - itโ€™s been missing my place, but got all the wind as Iโ€™m on the top of a hill.

That's because the way things are going, there likely IS no next level. It's punchingbags/shitkickers, then empty space, then "management".

Things do not get done because all the workers got the arse.

oztrin@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y

Came through the storm just fine aside from being woken up at 2:30 and 4:30. Cats are fine, in fact Sammi is back to her old self or nearly so (she hasn't been too hungry since the scan).
Just about to go for a dental appointment - wish me luck with the drive!

Cendana@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (2 replies)

So I noticed a company had put up a poorly redacted screenshot of a customer order, so basically they just gave away a personโ€™s name, email address and physical address on Instagram.

What would you do?

  1. Inform the victim

  2. Inform the vendor

  3. Contact OAIC

  4. Email 131444

tombruzzo@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I remember I had some compliance training on this recently. Maybe start with informing the vendor and if you don't like their response, go to the victim and the OAIC

I got back home with my dental x-ray and decided to take a peek. Discovered an x-ray with more teeth than I actually have, in much better condition. Unfortunately they were unable to swap my teeth to match the x-ray, so I had to drive back and pick up the right x-ray instead. I should probably be annoyed at the waste of time, but I'm too busy being relieved that I discovered the error before my dental appointment tomorrow.

The weather made for an interesting trip outdoors for errands

and no, I haven't taken my coat to the opshop yet so it's not my fault this time

This guy is Imgur famous for doing structural integrity inspections of houses, requiring him and his team to go under the floor of houses and film the dodgy and interesting stuff found there. I think they're in the California area, so they get called to inspect after the seismic activity they have there, and often find buildings that weren't built to code in the first place. Your photo was like the classic beginning of a "Things seen this week during structural assessments" post.

I find wind gusts fascinating. The giant tumble dryer decides what stays and what gets ripped up. Big gum tree you're getting uprooted um your friend there can stay. Rusty tin shed you're on your last warning this time but I'm gonna shower you with palm tree fronds from somebody elses yard. Kids trike I'm gonna help you along there.

Of course I don't like that it can be frightening or that people can get hurt or the cost of destruction.

underwatermagpies@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

I have the central heating on, and I'm jumping slightly each time it turns itself on again. I may be a touch on edge.

Another front of big wind on the way around 11 apparently.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Iโ€™m seeing a bunch of trees down in my area and feeling nervous about the ones near my house. Debating whether to move the bed into the other room temporarily as it might be safer

Taleya@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

brains gotta brain so if it makes you feel safer, do it.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

Good thing the previous owner of our house installed steel shutters. The rattling was annoying, but much better than having the window blow in instead.

Neighbourhood doesn't look like it copped it hard. Some branches and gravel strewn about is all.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

I'm out again, fortunately all traffic lights were operational. I saw one neighbour's fence has blown over, but it was in pretty poor condition to start with.

tombruzzo@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

I didn't see anything serious on my quick trip out this morning. There's only a few branches on the ground but I'm sure there are areas near me that copped it more
