What songs does your local Ice Cream Van play?

Ours plays the 1979 hit Music Box Dancer which is weird because it's definitely not public domain.

At one point, I heard our local ice cream truck playing Wintergatan - Marble Machine. I thought it was cute and kinda refreshing to hear a newer tune like that.

That's the one they play in my area in Michigan, I really hate it

In my hometown they played the entertainer most of the time:

I live in a weird ice cream van black hole. The last place we live had them and that was only 5 blocks away (as the crow flies). Every year more families with kids move into the neighborhood and every summer I think the vans will expand their territory to cover us, but 10 years in and it hasn't happened.

tetris11@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 1y

I need to start using "as the crow flies" more

Roflmasterbigpimp@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I had a Nightmare once where I heard a child crying out in the streets. I looked out and it was an Ice-cream-Truck playing screams instead of music.

tetris11@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 1y

christ that gave me chills

Nemo@midwest.social · 6 pts · 1y (1 reply)

There are three.

One plays "Brave Bells of Scotland" with the word "HELLO-O" yelled by a distorted female voice every so often.

One plays chiptune Christmas Carols all year round.

One plays a medley of old songs heavily featuring "Turkey in the Straw".

tetris11@lemmy.ml · 5 pts · 1y

ā€œHELLO-Oā€

Match of the Day theme where I live. (It's probably playing in your head now, sorry).

It was Greensleeves where I grew up, halfway around the world.

Same result: synchronised yells from nearby houses of "Muuuuum... iiiiiice creeeeeeam!"

tetris11@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 1y

never apologise for a good song

MisterNeon@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1y (8 replies)

In Philadelphia PA we got Mr. Softee blasting this down the street.

tetris11@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 1y (3 replies)

It sounds almost like "Hail to the Bus Driver"

TaviRider@reddthat.com · 2 pts · 1y (2 replies)

It reminds me of O Du Lieber Augustin. And it took me a really long time to figure out that title… I thought it was some well-known nursery rhyme melody, but it’s a 224 year old Viennese tune.

tetris11@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 1y

tangentially related: the football chant Who ate all the Pies? and the Mary Poppin's song Step in Time! both share the same origin of an old Cockney song Knees Up Mother Brown

TaviRider@reddthat.com · 2 pts · 1y

Apparently it was adapted to ā€œDid you ever see a lassie?ā€ which has much brighter and simpler lyrics than the original, which is very dark.

Masamune@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

Yup, that's the one!

TaviRider@reddthat.com · 2 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Yeah, Mr. Softee in San Francisco uses the same music. I don’t recognize it from anywhere else. It sounds like a music box, especially because many of the notes don’t hit the beats.

MisterNeon@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

They have them in San Francisco? I didn't know they existed until I moved up to the East Coast. I assume that Mr. Softee is where the Pete and Pete character Mr. Tastee comes from.

TaviRider@reddthat.com · 2 pts · 1y

Mister Softee is headquartered in Runnymede, NJ so the east coast association makes sense. It’s a franchisor so there’s trucks in 18 states.

The Wikipedia article about them says the song is titled ā€œJingle and Chimesā€, and it’s based on ā€œThe Whistler and his Dogā€. There’s lyrics too!

The Entertainer

I choose to believe you mean this instead of this.

crusty@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I think there are mainly two competitors in Norway. The oldest and most recognisable is Isbilen (recently rebranded to FrƄst) which plays Norwegian dance no. 2 by Edvard Grieg https://youtu.be/GFQLAVpataA

Diplom-isbilen is a lot newer, however lately i have mostly been hearing them driving around. https://youtu.be/6xXp-11Swcc

Hjem-is no longer operates in Norway, but they used to just ring a bell. I think they're still around in Sweden under the name Hemglass

tetris11@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 1y

The first one is really fun with that periodic trill which peters out. The second one I have to say I'm not very fond of, maybe because it sounds overproduced in that advert. Still, beats a ringing a bell!

istoff@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y

Almost always Musicbox dancer for Cape Town, South Africa.

credo@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y (3 replies)

Apparently that turkey in the straw one is super racist- or rather the lyrics of the version that took off and led to ICT fame. I swear ours still plays it.. I’ll have to listen closely next time I happen to hear it.

The first and natural inclination, of course, is to assume that the ice cream truck song is simply paying homage to "Turkey in the Straw," but the melody reached the nation only after it was appropriated by traveling blackface minstrel shows. There is simply no divorcing the song from the dozens of decades it was almost exclusively used for coming up with new ways to ridicule, and profit from, black people.

Track_Shovel@slrpnk.net · 2 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Perhaps I'm naive. I looked up the lyrics and found one spot in them where, yes, for sure, that's racist. However, it's akin to Enie meenie miney moe, where a slight change could make the song suitable again.

credo@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2014/05/11/310708342/recall-that-ice-cream-truck-song-we-have-unpleasant-news-for-you

I already posted the relevant bit above. The history of this song in ice cream trucks was absolutely racist.

Track_Shovel@slrpnk.net · 1 pts · 1y

Something isn't meshing with my app, or whatever. I swear I saw your comment but it disappeared and the one I replied to remained.

Ok, so we are both right it turns out: Turkey in the Straw is as I described (one racist passage), but was used as the tune for the ice cream truck song which was a bajillion times worse, Holy cow.

Fuck things were bad back then.

grasshopper_mouse@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Not an icecream truck, but the fuel delivery truck music that I heard while I was in a study abroad program in Amman, Jordan is fucking terrifying. Not my video but this is it

gmtom@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y

Completely tangential, but why are all the default recommended videos for that about "woke people getting destroyed"

tetris11@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 1y

That's kind of hilarious. I can imagine adults breaking out into gleeful smiles and running over to get the freshest barrel

Squeezer@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

ā€˜Oranges and lemons say the bells of St Clements’ but like it’s from the minaret of a mosque run by the hard of hearing. It’s aggressive.

LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org · 2 pts · 1y

Ours plays 'Oranges and Lemons', but it's so fast and jangly that it took me a while to work it out. Most of the vans around where I live tend to play 'Just One Cornetto'

Just some generic music box song. But the guy drives too fast. I was outside once and managed to catch him to tell him to slow down because I didn't have time to grab my wallet AND run outside. But he didn't speak much English and I think he thought I was telling him he was speeding because he seemed to disagree after a short discussion with his wife. Just wanted him to slow down, maybe stop more often. Figured he would get more sales.

Oh well, since I'm a grown ass man, guess I'll just get my ice cream at the store. But seriously, where is the fun in that?

tetris11@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 1y

Get on our bike and chase after him with your money!
