I'm doing a favour for someone that involves me spending the night in the Yarra Valley tonight. I have a gorgeous fire going, and I'm kicking back with some yummy cheese. And I'm being genuinely helpful. Love it.

Ikea sent my stuff in a big box. With a cut out door and window and roof peep hole it will make an excellent cat play house for Bill and Ted. ๐Ÿ˜ธ๐Ÿ˜ธ

Had to clip Mickey's claws a bit - he kept getting them stuck and then not being able to release it and yowling in pain. So I had my partner cuddle him with his oodie, and I used some small curved scissors and just very slightly clipped the very tips of his claws, just to remove the curve.

He did so well, no struggling or freaking out. He wasn't happy, but he wasn't afraid. He such a great cat!

I'll have to grab him a new scratchy thing and keep an eye on his claws.

I need to get one for Mickey, I think he really would benefit from exploring my buildings little garden

Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (3 replies)

If I tried that with Gibson, she'd go for my eyes

StudChud@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y (2 replies)

I was surprised he was as chill as he was. I think it helps that I adopted him when he was 4 months and I've handled his paws without doing anything since. Just petting them or kissing them, so he's already pretty relaxed when I interact with his paws. I just expected him to not like the clipping itself, but yeah, no issues and hasn't gotten caught on anything since :D

Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I wish I'd handled her paws more when she was a kitten. I pay someone else to do it. But admittedly, the vet requires her to be drugged before I bring her in so it's not just me lol

StudChud@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

Definitely way easier when they're sedated haha, next time you go to the vet and you have to sedate her, you could enquire if they would trim her claws a bit.

But if they're not causing issues for her then I wouldn't stress; this is literally the first time I'd ever clipped Mickey's claws and it was only because he was getting them caught in everything.

Feeling a bit snack-ey but wasnt impressed with any of the pantry offerings. Thought about cooking a quick cake or something but no packet mixes left. Then I remembered: I'm an adult and a semi-competent baker, I can just make something from scratch. Oat and choc chip muffins now in the overn.

underwatermagpies@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y

I did banana choc chip muffins yesterday, but must've accidentally used a magical disappearing recipe. There are not that many left. Although a few did make it into the freezer for future snack emergencies.

Went and picked up my medical cannabis from the post office today. Very odd, showing my ID, it all being legitimate instead of meeting someone in the corner of the pub. Soโ€ฆ yesterday while getting some good ole IT support, I tell them I have no write access is because the folder is outside of the directory (that everyone thinks it is in). Emphatically told (x 3) nope, that should not affect my permissions. Then enjoyed a mansplain back to me about where the folder was located (I know, I detailed an email to a senior 2 months agoโ€”who had no idea what I was talking about) and walked me through their cmd force update. It wasnโ€™t particularly patronising, but it was like I wasnโ€™t even heard.

I mean I probably couldnโ€™t IT help desk to save my life, but I canโ€™t say it doesnโ€™t hurt when Iโ€™ve done a little fun time hobbying with CLI.

But hey, small wins. At least it was fixed this time. Not like I have been waiting for two months or anything.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y

The standard roster where I work is 4 days on and 4 days off. Well, sort of, because the second two work days are actually nights and finish at 6am, thus somewhat ruining the first day off (along with your body clock). This also requires working 12 hour shifts, on a rotating roster that means you can't do anything regularly on set days (or even figure out what day it actually is most of the time).

tombruzzo@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y (2 replies)

I watched Alien 3 last night and it's a good movie. I think it suffered from two things: -All the production problems before and during the shoot -Being called Alien 3 and being the direct followup to Aliens

It could have worked as its own movie or as an Alien spinoff. I think people were so upset about how it undoes the ending of Aliens that it coloured their opinion on the rest of the movie.

One small nitpick though, and I can probably explain it; the Alien knew Ripley was carrying the Queen and that's why it wouldn't attack her. Why wouldn't the Alien just plaster her to a wall up in the air ducts until the Queen hatched? It was probably wasn't considered because the Alien was meant to be smaller than normal, having come from an animal. Production problems meant it kept changing size, and whilst the movie has a man sized Alien pulling people into air vents, that could have been part of the rewrites done during the shoot and wasn't scoped into the larger story.

useless_modern_god@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 1y (1 reply)

The studio fucked around with Fincher so much that it affected the outcome of the product. We all know how good Fincher is and, personally I look past the interference and enjoy the movie on its own terms I guess.

I have read the Cadigan/Gibson screenplay also and would love to see that on the big screen.

I dunno if youโ€™re still on Reddit, but, r/LV426 loves to talk about this stuff

tombruzzo@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1y

I came across r/LV426 looking for the screenplay. I don't really go on reddit anymore but I might sub anyway.

I think it's so funny they picked Fincher when they wanted the movie made as quickly as possible. He was less of a known quantity then but he's up there with Kubrick in terms of how many takes he's willing to do for a scene.

I loved the very Fincher cam at the end of the Alien's POV. It's a great cheap way to get that feeling of terror without needed to have the Alien on screen like a trick Carpenter would have used in an early movie

Pilk@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 1y (3 replies)

When you're drinking with someone, oldest person pours first, make a whirlpool in the bottle, tap the bottom with the palm of your hand firmly, open it then poke the top of the bottle between your first and second digit (ideally spilling some), pour with two hands covering the label, never pour a drink for yourself, the first drink is taken as a shot (the rest can be shot or sipped), turn away from/avoid eye contact with the person who poured your drink if they're older than you. It's a whole thing but not mandatory haha

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Interesting

This is our ritual. The man pours, he is older, he is more competent, into 2 shot glasses. On the hour. Every hour. We clink and say "sahtain" which means double health in arabic. Then we say "that's a nice drop" and by 10:30 I'm nigh nighs. Sweet dreams.

Miserable weather for either. I would honestly stay home instead of a trip tomorrow, but if forced out I would choose Ballarat. It will be a touch colder in Ballarat, but the road in Walhalla can be a bit dangerous and I wouldn't want to be driving through there in a storm.
